Once Upon A Time In America is my favourite movie with De Niro in, though, not his best performance.

the film's unfairly underrated. don't know why though...

Fellini and Tarkovsky are masters of their art, you HAVE TO check something from them ;)

Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu is excellent.

So are...

Christopher Nolan

David Lynch

Lars von Trier

Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting; Gerry; Elephant; Last Days; Paris, Je t'aime (segment "Le Marais") - all of them are great (well maybe except Last Days)

Woody Allen (Everybody Says I Love You; Deconstructing Harry; Celebrity; Sweet and Lowdown; Match Point; Scoop) - just love this man =)

Sofia Coppola (Virgin Suicides; Lost in Translation) - not too many movies, but I adore both so yep.

Ang Lee (The Ice Storm; Brokeback Mountain, Chosen)

Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction; Reservoir Dogs; Kill Bill; Four Rooms (segment "The Man from Hollywood"; Jackie Brown) - no comments, he's simply awesome (love him acting too heh)

I also would like to mention Hayao Miyazaki for his unbelievable animation movies (Howl's Moving Castle; Spirited Away; Princess Mononoke; Kiki's Delivery Service; Warriors of the Wind)

Sam Mendes for his extremely beautiful piece of art - American Beauty.

Richard Kelly for Donnie Darko.

Federico Fellini for Nights of Cabiria and 8, 1/2.

And, of course, Michel Gondry for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep.

P.S.

1. Andrei Tarkovsky

1. Stalker (1979) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

3. Andrei Rublev

:nice:

Martin Scorcese definitely.

Steven Spielberg for several magical films, including one of my all-time faves, "Back To The Future".

Tarantino for "Pulp Fiction".

This list seems like I would have done it. I absolutely agree with you on everything. :nice: Especially Sofia Coppola, my favorite director ever. :)

2. Martin Scorsese

career highlights:

1. Goodfellas (1990) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

2. Casino (1995)

3. Ragging Bull (1980)

4. The Departed (2006)

What about Taxi Driver? I reckon it's his best film...

I agree with directors not getting enough attention. People not interested in cinema tend to overlook them, which is sometimes very frustrating.

My list...

Alfred Hitchcock, especially North by Northwest and Vertigo

The "movie brats"

Francis Ford Coppola for The Godfather and Apocalypse Now

Steven Spielberg -too many films but Jaws and Schindler's List are the ones worth mentioning

Marty Scorsese for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas

...and George Lucas, to a somewhat lesser extent.

Terrence Malick for Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line

Terry Gilliam for the Monty Python films, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys

Ridley Scott for Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator etc.

Tim Burton for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Big Fish etc.

Peter Jackson for the LotR trilogy

Ang Lee for Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, Brokeback Mountain etc.

Peter Weir for Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show etc.

Clint Eastwood, especially his recent ones such as Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Letters From Iwo Jima

And among the more "recent" ones...

Curtis Hanson for L.A. Confidential

Richard Linklater for Before Sunrise/Before Sunset

Fernando Meirelles for City of God and The Constant Gardener

Bryan Singer for The Usual Suspects

Christopher Nolan for Memento

Sam Mendes, for American Beauty and Road to Perdition (and also for his consistent use of composer Thomas Newman...)

Paul Greengrass for Bloody Sunday and United 93

+ Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Richard Kelly, Gus Van Sant, Michel Gondry already mentioned above.

I've also just seen Dan Harris' Imaginary Heroes and it impressed me for a directorial debut. I predict this kid will have a brillant career. :D

i just realized i forgot to mention Christopher Nolan, amazing director.

  • 4 weeks later...

David Lynch is my favorite director right now.

And I forgot Emir Kusturica... I don't like all of his movies, but Arizona Dream is one of the most amazing movies ever done! And it's not even about Johnny Depp (lol), it's the whole movie, the subject, the great music, the humor, and both Lili Taylor and Faye Dunaway are awesome! I just love Lili Taylor after this movie.

What I'm trying to say is that if you've never ever seen Arizona Dream, you definitely should.

  • Author

add Ingmar Bergman to that list as well

i saw The Seventh Seal some weeks ago, after the film i was speechless. amazing! cinematography at it's best

5. Federico Fellini

career highlights:

1. 8 1/2 (1963) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

2. La Dolce Vita (1960)

3. Nights of Cabiria (1957)

I must add La strada (the road) and Amarcord

anyway, I like many of the directors you already mentioned but I need to add Pedro Almodovar, I haven't seen all of his movies, just Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother), Hable con ella (Talk to her) and the last one Volvèr, ad they are all beautiful, love his ability to portray the characters of his movies :nice:
