The meaning of Art, if there's any

Featured Replies

No idea if there're any people left in the Lounge, so I may be just talking to myself but whatever.

So. What the fuck is art? What the fuck is art about? I'm confused about it.

Some people think that creating art is about other people liking it ---> much money.

But everything that's for money SUCKS! Because if you're making a money out of something, you're no more creative, you don't express yourself - you unconsciously think what will everybody else think of your art, will they pay for it or not, will they like it or not. Critics, friends, family, fans, doesn't matter.

Maybe art is about being satisfied with your work, being happy just because of something you made. But how on Earth can such artists live? They have to eat, don't they? If nobody loves what they do, where the hell do these people get money from? Besides, good artists are never satisfied with their own art.

Maybe art isn't about anything, maybe it's just pointless?

People die, there's a war, there's a sickness, there're so many problems in this world. Who really gives a shit about art? Is it really powerfull today, compared to atomic bomb or anti-AIDS vaccine people're trying to invent? I mean, if somebody's dying he doesn't care about art. You can draw a picture, you can give it to him, but will this person really care? He's gonna die anyway, he'd like you to go and become a scientist, to invent a panacea, to save his life. Not to create some fucking picture you think is great.

I don't know. I wrote a lot.

Some art is rubbish, some art is good. Some idiots will pay over the odds for a postcard of a painting

Art can be anything. The way that you brush your teeth is an art. I think some people make art for the money, others make art because they would rather that than have an office job all their life. I think some people make art because they have so many crazy things going through their head and just have to get it out on paper.

I think art can be used to show things that are wrong with the world. And you mention that there are wars and stuff going on. But maybe a painting on a wall in a hospital will bring somebody comfort who is stuck in a hospital because of war.

....just some thoughts. (good topic by the way)

The word expression immediately comes to mind when I think of a real art form. Definitely not for money or gain. The only gain the artist should recieve is satisfaction of the completed work and that the message is expressed to those who witness it. Whether it be despair or joy. :\ I think.

Art is intrinsic to the human experience. Art and the cultures that give it context are what makes us such unique creatures. Certainly, art (in all of its forms), has different functions for different people. Some use art to record the world as they see it – in my opinion, no true art can be subjective. Art helps us see the world in a new light - reveals truths that are otherwise obscured by daily life. It also serves to give a tangible form to ideas and feelings. Since we are such complex animals, with such a broad array of emotions and ideas, our languages fail to be able to express the immeasurable intricacies of our thoughts. That's when art steps in to provide this outlet of expression. It's true that in today's age of commercialism, art has become another mass produced product, more often than not devoid of any significance...but the creation of art in its purest form, meaning art for art's sake, plays a hugely important role in defining what it means to be human.

^ You got it. Beautifully said. :)

There is no meaning of art, yet everything is the meaning of art! =O

What do I know?

Maybe none of us know.

Perhaps the people who created the greatest works of art ever known didn't really know the meaning of art, and just knew what they wanted to accomplish and bring into the world.

I think there's tons and tons of thoughts and questions and answers that are the meaning of art.

Because art takes so many different forms, there can't be one answer to it.

But as I said before... what do I know? :P

We actually discussed upon this answerless question yesterday. My classmate claimed that the art "wakes" our emotions.

But I would have to disagree.

Art is life itself. It would be unfair to limit it.

At least that's how I see it.

Art is intrinsic to the human experience. Art and the cultures that give it context are what makes us such unique creatures. a real artist would say that is total bullshit. I wouldn't consider myself an artist. I just consider myself someone that makes things, paints things, writes things.

whatever. If it's called "art" then so be it.

Now. all this art in it's purest form...that is a bunch of bull. Because well, who can fucking KNOW or can begin to define what art is...let alone PURE art?!

NOt one single person.

I guess you can only define it as an individual viewing someones creation.

Art does not define human what it is to be human... it's just art. It doesn't even define the person creating it. Let's not get all philisophical on something that can never be defined. NOt ever ever no matter how verbose you get.

". Art helps us see the world in a new light - reveals truths that are otherwise obscured by daily life."

mmmmm it's just a painting. Like I said only the artist and the viewer can tell you what it means to them. Sorta like what you mentioned in one part. In other words art CAN help one individual see something in a different light.

It's kind of like those splotch paintings where a creator just splatters paint on a canvas. I really really doubt they are defining the word "love" in a painting like that. I don't know if you guys have ever done splatter painting...I have. It's just that . Splatters in colors you choose splattering in on a big ol canvas. I wasn't like

splatter! done. Okay this canvas is defining "war". No. It was a release. It was a pleasure to my eyes. Just mine. Who cares what anyone else thinks about it.

Now, dearest Lera. I always read you threads because they contain thoughts far to intricate. I would get lost walking around in your brains. If I ever was in your brains ...I would just pretend I was makin spagetti instead of trying to understant you.

THere.

Now.... remove the fact that money can be involved, remove the fact that there are other deadly issues in the world like disease.

There are many subjects, events, and activities on this earth. And that is just something you will have to accept. Okay? And this thing "art" is one of them.

Maybe you are right. ANd maybe these art people make art to really avoid the worldly issues. Could be. But I think sometimes, artists forget their artistic purposes in just creating for their own peace of mind and get greedy. That is when money comes into place.

And also remember that there are people so selfish, they ignore poverty, ignore disease, ignore BIG issues. And you can't ever ever change that. If you didn't create it, if you don't have the godly power involved, you can't cange it. Ever. No one can.

Life really is as sad as accepting what it going on in it. I really think life is just whatever you accept of it and take. It's not beautiful. It can be AT TIMES. But not as a whole like Coldplay would like to have you believe.

Unless you change everything that is wrong in the world ..that is as good as it gets.

The end

I hate how you make me think of these things, Lera! :bomb:

Ah I'm sorry, Crystal. I didn't mean to

The thing is that in my opinion artist is someone who can see through things, who can make usual things look different... I don't know. All this shit art teachers put in our heads to make us love them and think they're artists.

But what if artist is just someone who makes art? And what if art is anything? Because, you know, for someone making coffee is art, for someone else painting is. Then we all are artists and than it's even more confusing.

I believe that the meaning of art is probably to just make art. Because it feels great, it feels alive, so what the fuck.

But then again, I wish I was cool enough to be so independent of the rest of the world, of people, of money, of all the art that's been already created on this planet. But I guess I'm not, and I'm starting to believe that nobody is.

And yeah, life is sad, but thinking that I can't change anything is just... I don't know. What's the point then? What to live for if you can't change anything and make it better?

That's it. 'Artists' usually think they can change something in this world, they think they really have the power to create beauty and love and all. But maybe they're just too stoned to see that nobody gives a shit.

it's true. no one can change the world...you can make a difference sometimes and do like they say "make a dent" in this world. But once you go, it goes. I think you can be GOOD at something and that can maybe make you think you are an artist. Like maybe if you do make-up well, or have a sense of style that many people seem to think is pleasant. Whatever it is. Don't listen to teachers. Unless they are the type that go against the grain, you know. They have their very own style they learned by themselves and give you honest down to earth answers.

Teachers are so full of shit sometimes, there are only one or two good ones in a school at a time. Seriously.

Art is anything you want it to be, from anyone. Really. Even they gay ones that are full of themselves. Because, really they are doing their own thing even if people throw eggs at their house everyday because their arts sucks. If they want to call it art...then so be it. You might think they suck, the whole world might think they suck...and that person just might be crazy ...but whatever. What are ya gonna do, right?

Maybe art is nothing and we think it is everything. Maybe it's just doing stuff that is so general, and real art will always be hidden. ah, i'm just full of it.

The thing is that deep deep inside I still believe that the world can be changed, but I was told that it's only because I'm 17 so many fucking times that I got kinda tired of being that romantic and all.

Maybe people could change it, if they all would try. But one person... I don't know. Not me for sure whaha.

What annoys me about art teachers is that they usually say that the most important thing is to express ourselves and not give a shit what everyone else thinks. To respect yourself's opinion only. But then again, when you create something they judge it, they give you a mark and they tell you if it's good or bad, so they make you care about their opinion.

That's why I really think that such think as art school or art teacher is actually kinda pointless.

I'm just... don't know, confused. For some reason all artists I know seem so pretentious and phony and commercial.

Everyone who's famous makes me sick, even if I like his/her work, I still know that this person gets money out of everything he/she does and that's just... so fake, I don't know.

Maybe I'm all phony and pretentious myself and that's the reason of all my problems lol.

Who cares if you are just seventeen? I am sure the answer is obvious at the age of eight when you get picked on for being fat :P the world SUCKS Lera... and always will. You can act all happy and hippity if you want to make things positive for you...and that is all fine and dandy. But there won't be a time when you become completely blind to injustice, life is always fair, things always end right side up. No way is anyone gonna have that life.

Art teachers: probably on my list of top ten...scum of the earth. I mean, I have taken some art classes for different things. Painting art class is where you find the most pretentions, phony sons of bitches. Theses ladies and gentlemen truly think they know what art is and you are right. They are always trying to make you think that art is anything you want it to be and that everyone is an artist and only and individuals opinion or taste matters. But they give you low grades on work they think isn't art. I mean. that is a huge contradiciton...obviously.

My sister was 16 and in a art class and the teacher told the class: " Draw anything you want today. No one will be graded, everyone can just draw what they feel like drawing in any color and shape. Just make sure it's artistic"...

My sister drew and color a monkey with green arms, head and body in an all green rainforest and green rain coming down. The teacher takes up her paper and rips it in half and tells her to start over.

What kind of a person let alone "artist" is that?! A dumb one

Anyway.

I don't know what to say about your bit on people being phony when they make money out of art. There is a lot I could say but just can't put it into words just yet.

Art is simply creation. Nothing more, nothing less. It is a distraction from normal, mundane life, and that's all it will ever be. Now...why do people seem to love art? Because it is simply creation. Why do parents love their children so much? Not because they are money pits or consume great amounts of time...it's because they created them. Why do people love money so much? Because they created it. People think they have put in some grand effort to make something that will astound the human race, when in actuality all it does is puzzle and entertain them. At least, that's what Plato says.

I consider myself an artist, I write both non-musically and musically, so I have to constantly remind myself that it's all just entertainment in the end. But what I do believe in is beauty. I think you can, very very very rarely, find beauty in art. And that's why I listen to Coldplay.

Idk, thats just my two cents.

Art is only for humans,or an animal could create art?

Art is only for humans,or an animal could create art?

First of all..where have you been!?

At first I was like...that question is pretty simple...but then I actually had to think about the response for a while. Animals live by instinct. And some are more intelligent than other animals. I would say that spider webs and birds nests are pretty amazing and something like a spider web can't be replicated by man in strength or design. I mean, sure we could rip a web up in seconds...but in a spiders relative size, it's tough stuff. But really, a spider and it's ability to create a web weren't of it's own creation. Something created animals first with those abilities. And humans too, now that I think about it. I mean, if you believe that God exists and is the original creator... then the real artist is God. But who knows.

What about animals makes you think they are art creators?

Humans are animals, so animals can make art!:P We make nests, too - some use mud, others use sticks of wood, or bamboo.. Plus, a couple of the other primates can make tools, and tool making is an art..:smug: So there!:laugh3:

Joslin always said that art is anything that catches your attention. And a guy that plays with clay has got to be earthy enough to really get down to the nitty-gritty of things!! I think, given the context, art is recorded forms of attention-getting things, and is highly subjective. My neighbor's dog pays attention to tennis balls, so tennis balls are art to a dog. To us, snow balls might be art, especially if the aim is good!:laugh3: (ducks and covers..)

Art - it's for the chordates.
