WHO DO YOU think are the men and women who have made Hampshire famous around the world?

 

Is it the county’s historic figures like Admiral Lord Nelson, Florence Nightingale, Queen Victoria, Lord Mountbatten and King Alfred? Or perhaps it’s Hampshire’s famous literary figures like Jane Austen and Charles Dickens?

 

And then there’s the county’s renowned sports stars – Olympians like Iwan Thomas, Roger Black and Peter Waterfield, record-breaking sailors like Dee Caffari and Dame Ellen MacArthur and revered football icons like Matt Le Tissier, Alf Ramsay, Mick Channon and the late, great Alan Ball.

 

Then there’s Hampshire’s cricketting legends – men like Shane Warne, David Gower, Shaun Udal and Robin Smith.

 

Away from the sporting arena the glittering icons from stage and screen add to the fascinating mix.

 

Among the many famous people linked with the county are Benny Hill, Jeremy Irons, Tommy Cooper, Peter Sellers, Sheila Hancock, Colin Firth and Sir Alec Guinness rubbing shoulders with film directors Ken Russell and Anthony Minghella.

Meanwhile on the music scene, Hampshire can offer Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler, RnB star Craig David, Coldplay’s Will Champion, Take That’s Howard Donald, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, Level 42’s Mark King and Razorlight’s Andy Burrows.

 

Finally, there are the men and women who have literally shaped the county – it’s leading entrepreneurs, architects and designers – and those to whom the nation will forever be indebted like Spitfire designer R.J. Mitchell.

 

The Daily Echo will be publishing a fascinating supplement on June 20 in which we pay tribute to Hampshire’s true greats.

Our aim is ambitious: we will attempt to select the top 100 and we now need YOUR help to do it.

 

With the help of a select panel of experts, the Daily Echo is already sifting through a lengthy list of contenders in a bid to trim it down to the magical 100.

 

We are also inviting YOU, our readers and website visitors, to send in your suggestions so that the supplement also contains the results of a unique readers’ poll.

 

Your favourite Hampshire stars do not necessarily need to have been born in the county. However they must have had a solid association at some point during their lives and made a notable contribution to either the county or the country.

COLDPLAY drummer Will Champion has surged ahead in The Daily Echo's competition to find Hampshire's Top 100.

 

Votes have been pouring in after we asked our reader to name the Hampshire citizens they thought had made the biggest impact around the world.

 

Will's leap to the top of the leader board means Dire Strait's frontman Mark Knopfler has sunk to second place.

i know. I think they realised it was too big a task for them to take on. Says on that page they decided Hampshire birth was not enough to qualify a person. So that would have expanded their list quite a bit. Silly. Rules of research! DEFINE YOUR AREAS BEFORE YOU START! :laugh3:
