Can old man Mandaric do what he failed to do at his time at Pompey and beat the russians?

Ex-footballer Ian Wright in race row with African traffic warden

Last updated at 18:17pm on 2nd November 2007 commentIconSm.gif Comments (20)

Ian Wright, the former footballer and television presenter, has been accused of calling an African traffic warden a "monkey".

He is also alleged to have told the man to "**** off back to his own country" in a dispute over a parking ticket.

Wright denies all the warden's claims, which followed the row outside his home in St John's Wood, North London.

"He's a liar," he said.

"He called me a white man who lives in a white man's road.

"I said to him, 'I'm sure your parents are happy that you've come to England and been a traffic warden instead of a lawyer or something'."

Police were called when a scuffle erupted last month after the former England and Arsenal striker was issued with a ticket for parking on the street without a permit.

One of Wright's friends grappled with the 44-year- old warden and onlookers said Wright acted as peacemaker.

A 38-year-old man was cautioned for assault after the fracas.

But three weeks after the incident, the warden went to a police station to make a formal complaint.

Police have confirmed they are investigating an allegation of racist abuse.

A witness said: "Ian Wright had parked his car on the road and received a parking ticket.

"But for some reason, his mate followed the warden down the road and they ended up pushing and shoving each other.

"Ian Wright then came out of his drive and tried to smooth things over. The fight had nothing to do with Ian Wright, he didn't start or provoke anything, he was just trying to calm everything down."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers received an allegation of racial abuse which will be investigated."

It is not the first time Wright has had a run-in with a parking attendant. Two years ago he and his wife Deborah were accused of littering after a warden saw someone throw a paper cup out of the window of their Bentley.

IanWrightTicketBIG_468x369.jpgIan Wright's friend continues the argument

The couple were about to stand trial, with the warden as a witness, when a third person came forward and confessed to the offence.

Wright, voted one of 100 Great Black Britons, was the victim of racism four years ago as he watched his stepson, Shaun Wright-Phillips, score a goal for Manchester City at a match against Queen's Park Rangers.

QPR fan Terence Argyle, who was sitting in front of him, turned around and racially abused Wright.

He was later charged and convicted.

Wright, who played for England 33 times and was awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to football, has become a media personality since he ended his playing career and he is a regular pundit on the BBC's Match of the Day.

He is also patron of the African-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust and backs the Show Racism The Red Card campaign, which aims to stamp racism out of football.

At well, we lost, not a big deal. Trip to Newcastle tomorrow, no doubt we will lose as we haven't won at Newcastle in 56 years, hopefully it will only be a 1-0 or 2-1 lose

Arsenal 2-2 Man Utd

With eight minutes left, Cristiano Ronaldo successfully converts Patrice Evra's cross to put Man Utd in control

William Gallas equalised in injury-time to salvage a draw and keep Arsenal on top of the Premier League after an absorbing clash with Manchester United.

Gallas turned Wayne Rooney's half-hit effort into his own goal on the stroke of half time to give United the lead.

Cesc Fabregas' cool finish put Arsenal level two minutes after the break, but Cristiano Ronaldo slid home Patrice Evra's cross nine minutes from time.

But Gallas then scrambled in Gael Clichy's cross to earn a point.

The opening 45 minutes proved an anti-climax until Gallas diverted Rooney's tame shot in on the stroke of half-time.

Arsenal had reasonable penalty claims ignored by referee Howard Webb after 15 minutes when Nemanja Vidic tugged Alexander Hleb's shirt as they tangled in the area.

United had a good chance seconds later when Bacary Sagna failed to react to Ronaldo's cross and Ryan Giggs, perhaps caught by surprise, could only turn a close-range effort wide.

Owen Hargreaves was outstanding in shielding United's defence from Arsenal's attacking threat, but he was powerless as the Gunners almost went ahead after after 35 minutes.

Gallas escaped the attentions of the United rearguard to glance Fabregas' free-kick against the legs of Edwin van der Sar.

United's Brazilian midfield man Anderson is clearly a talent, but he demonstrated an unsavoury side to his nature that predictably infuriated the crowd.

He flamboyantly demanded referee Webb show yellow cards to Arsenal players, then rolled in ridiculous fashion after a foul by Fabregas that earned the Spanish youngster a booking.

United staged a smash-and-grab in first-half stoppage time, Ronaldo crossing for Rooney, who failed to make a proper connection but saw Gallas provide a crucial deflection past Manuel Almunia.

The gauntlet was thrown down to Arsenal - but they picked it up to equalise two minutes after the restart.

Emmanuel Eboue played in Emmanuel Adebayor, who was blocked by Van der Sar, but Sagna crossed the loose ball for Fabregas to slide in a composed finish.

Arsenal had started to dominate possession, but it was United who had the next big chance after 63 minutes.

Giggs found Rooney in space in the area, but he headed wastefully wide when he should have at least worked keeper Almunia.

Both managers made changes in the final 15 minutes, Wenger sending on Theo Walcott for Eboue, while Ferguson replaced the subdued Carlos Tevez and Anderson with Louis Saha and Michael Carrick.

The changes worked better for United as they took a vital lead with nine minutes left.

Walcott failed to track Evra, and when Saha played him in he crossed perfectly for Ronaldo to score.

Evra then enjoyed a huge piece of luck when he sliced substitute Eduardo da Silva's cross against his own bar with Van der Sar helpless.

Arsenal pressed forward and got the draw they deserved when Clichy's cross sparked a goalmouth scramble which ended with a shot from Gallas which, even though Van der Sar clawed it out, had clearly crossed the line.

Damn, sounded like an amazing game.

Although I am more for Arsenal, I think a 2-2 draw is fair. Both teams have been performing amazingly this season, so a draw was probably expected.

Video clips, anyone?

And what about Angie? She flew all the way from Texas to see Southampton play, and they still couldn't win at home, even though they had a one-man advantage for most of the match!!:laugh3:

Big Chris seals big win for ten-man Addicks

Chris Iwelumo was the last-gasp hero as ten-man Charlton snatched a dramatic win at St Mary's on Saturday.

The striker rose to head home a superb cross from substitute Luke Varney as the Addicks shrugged off the first-half dismissal of Jose Semedo to record a thoroughly deserved win.

Semedo picked up a second booking and a red card nine minutes before the interval after a collision with Jhon Viafara.

But the visitors, who had earlier seen Sam Sodje head against the bar, made light of their numerical disadvantage to take the game to their hosts for large parts of the second period.

charlton4267match1.jpgWith Andy Reid in superb form in the middle of the park it was they Irishman through whom all the good attacking stuff happened - and the spirit was emphasised before the break when he got back to make a fine saving challenge.

Few would begrudge the visitors the win as they created the best chances after the break as a superbly spirited backline provided a formidable platform.

After three straight defeats in the league this was just the sort of performance that Alan Pardew would have craved.

The Addicks showed everything in this game, spirit, willingness, battling ability and clinical prowess when it really mattered.

At the back Sodje had another terrific game, dominant in the air and a threat at set-pieces at the other end and Danny Mills' experience also showed through after the break as the Addicks adapted with ten men.

Lacking in confidence in the previous few matches, there was some sparkling passing play from the visitors too as Saints created little after the break.

Nicky Weaver made some solid stops but George Burley would surely have been furious that his side did not take the game by the scruff of the neck as they failed to hit the target for the first time this season.

The winning goal was a cracker too, Varney, relegated to the bench in an adapted 4-5-1 formation, providing the power to surge down the right and then sending in the sort of cross Chris Iwelumo can only dream about.

And the big man made no mistake with his first goal since October 2nd and fifth of the season.

It triggered boos from the home fans that continued after the final whistle but the large and vocal Charlton fans in the far corner will no doubt be smiling all the way back to London and Kent.

Charlton boss Pardew opted for an attacking 4-5-1 formation for the trip to St Mary's.

Iwelumo was named as the sole frontman for the Saints clash but was likely to be supported freely from midfield.

Jerome Thomas got the nod out wide on the left - his first league start since September 15 - and Lloyd Sam patrolled the opposite flank.

Further attacking impetus was likely to come from Zheng Zhi and skipper Reid, who shifted inside to a midfield triumvirate with Semedo.

At the back Grant Basey retained his place at left-back and Sam Sodje again partnered Jonathan Fortune in the centre of defence.

The change in formation meant Varney dropped to the bench where he was joined by Darren Ambrose, Yassin Moutaouakil, Madjid Bougherra and Darren Randolph.

After three successive defeats Pardew was keen to steady a ship that has remained anchored on 19 points since the last international break.

And in a city famous for ships, the Saints of Southampton laid in wait with both sides level on points ahead of kick-off after a recent upturn in fortunes on the South Coast.

George Burley's side were without ex-Addick Jason Euell but the speedy Nathan Dyer and Bradley Wright-Phillips were players to keep an eye on.

It was the Saints that showed first and when the ball dropped to Andrew Surman around 25 yards a minuet and a half in out the England U21 midfielder let fly with a fizzing low drive that was deflected just past the post.

At the other end Sodje got his head to a Reid corner on five minutes but was frustrated to see the ball soar over the bar.

charlton4267match2.jpg Basey won his first battle with Dyer on the Southampton right, shepherding the ball behind as the young winger stretched his legs for the first time.

Charlton hit back, however, forcing another corner on the opposite flank after seven minutes and the same two protagonists linked up again; Sodje steaming in to meet the Reid flag-kick and this time the header crashed down off the bar before the hosts scrambled clear.

It was certainly a lively opening and the clock had not hit double digits before Jhon Viafara had driven wide of the left upright and Iwelumo forced a smothering stop from Kelvin Davis with a low effort from 20 yards.

A better opening then fell the way of the hosts after a dozen minutes as Phil Ifil floated in a free-kick from the right and the unchallenged Stern John could only head a good chance straight at Nicky Weaver from close in.

Jose Semedo was booked for a foul two minutes later with Inigo Idiakez warming the hands of Weaver from the resulting free-kick.

Davis pouched an effort from Reid moments later at the other end and the Irishman was not far away with another effort from outside the box.

Then great work from Sam on the right saw him twist his man inside out.

His cross was not bad either and Iwelumo got ahead of his man but his diving header flew narrowly wide of the left upright.

Chances continued to arrive and good play from Thomas set up a shooting chance for Semedo whose low effort forced another sprawling stop from Davis midway though the half.

A Dyer cross was just too high for John in the middle while Ifil's tug on Thomas earned him a booking on the half hour.

From the resulting free-kick Reid's curling centre was met by - yes you've guessed it - Sodje with the centre-backs header flying across goal and wide.

Wright-Phillips forced a diving save from Weaver, who clutched the loose ball as well, with Sam booked shortly afterwards for a foul on Gregory Vignal.

The game took another twist nine minutes before the break when the Addicks were reduced to ten men.

Semedo, already booked for an early foul, collided with Viafara as he surged towards halfway and referee Keith Hill had little hesitation in producing a second yellow card - and then a red.

After the action resumed Wright-Phillips was sent clear down the right but his pull-back was cut out by the retreating Reid.

Sam shot over on the break after Zheng had found him on the right while the hosts when close on 42 minutes following a delightful interchange on the edge of the box involving Wright-Phillips.

The ball eventually looped to the loafing Viafara but the Colombian jabbed the ball just over the bar and the Addicks were in desperate need of the half-time whistle as the hosts spurned another glorious opening in stoppage time.

Wright-Phillips was involved again, expertly laying off a high pass for John who drove his shot wastefully wide of the right upright.

Iwelumo was booked in injury time but the whistle sounded shortly afterwards granting Pardew and his players the chance to regroup.

Sodje's typically whole-hearted challenge on Wright-Phillips earned him a lecture from Hills, but only after home skipper Wayne Thomas had taken it upon himself to go head to head with the defender. charlton4267match5.jpgZheng's cross came off Viafara and looped on to the roof of the net eight minutes in and Weaver got down low to hold a sizzling drive from the all-action Colombian four minutes later.

The visitors had a great chance of their own after 62 minutes, however.

After some delay with two balls on the pitch on more than one occasion, Danny Mills delivered a free-kick from just inside the Saints half.

Sodje headed the ball across for Zheng but the midfielder could only shoot over the bar when he might have done better.

Reid fired wide of the left upright for the visitors and at the other end a fine low cross from Ifil was missed by both Sodje in the middle, and John behind him.

Surman picked up a booking for a foul on Thomas while John's cynical trip on Reid perhaps warranted a booking yet yielded just a free-kick.

Saints, who had lost Christian Dailly for a few minutes with a blood wound, were soon restored to full compliment and then Burley made a double change sending on Adam Hammill and Grzegorz Rasiak for Surman and Wright-Phillips.

It was still Charlton doing the pressing and Thomas held the ball up for an age before Reid swapped passes with Sam and cut from left to right and then back to left before shooting narrowly wide.

Andrew Davies came on for Vignal for his debut for the hosts and Zheng was booked for unsporting behaviour before Yassin Moutaouakil replaced Sam 13 minutes from time.

Varney then came on for Thomas for the visitors with the winger looking in some pain as he hobbled off.

Still Charlton sought an unlikely winner as the game entered its closing stages but Weaver had to be on his toes to smother a free-kick from Idiakez.

The hosts scrambled away the loose ball and as Moutaouakil surged clear on the right there was a break on.

The ball was eventually smuggled behind for a corner and the flag-kick made its way to Basey who volleyed into the side-netting from the left angle of the box.

Darren Ambrose replaced Reid in stoppage time and then came the dramatic finale.

Varney surged down the right in the kind of positive fashion that was the highlight of the second half display and his cross was a peach.

It was the kind of cross any striker would thrive on and sure enough Iwelumo rose to power home a header and send everyone with Addicks allegiance into delight.

There was still time for the hosts to force a free-kick in the sixth of three minutes of stoppage time but Mills was strong to head clear and the result was rubberstamped when the whistle blew seconds later.

[11:33:27] <paul> listen butt munch. I don't even enjoy going to a football ground to watch matches. I prefer to watch it at home. I would never spend that amount of money on something I don't enjoy that much. You are a typical fool who supports a small club who thinks you can only support a team if you go every week and spend all your giro on tickets cause you love the club. People like that generally don't know anyting about football and you fit into that perfectly. When was the last time you said anything intelligent about football. discussed tactics, or skill. the only thing you say is city are good. come on city. you know nothing.

[11:34:51] <bart> I am pissing my self with laughter here mate... you are so funny

[11:39:52] <paul> its a true statement. not meant as a joke

[11:45:49] <paul> because you don't know any

[11:46:20] <bart> I do... I would play 3 -1-4-2 formation

[11:46:36] <paul> thats what a 5 year old would say

[11:46:49] <bart> but we dont really have a holding midfielder to proctect the defence...

[11:47:13] <bart> so svens 4-4-2 which he normally plays is the best..

[11:47:47] <paul> generic nonsense. sounds like you a reading 'basic football quotes for beginners'

[11:49:04] <bart> I never really get involved in debates about tatics.. I leave that to the experts.... have other things to worry about and I am not paid to worry about it...... u should see that goal we scored yeaterday... it came of about 20 passes..

[11:50:38] <bart> and for the record we are not a small club !!

[11:51:32] <bart> look what happend at leeds when a fan took over and started bying players etc... they are almost nothing now... (infact I wish there was)

[11:53:03] <paul> thats what people talk about when they talk about football. Where things went right or wrong. Its important to discuss the game and demonstrate an understanfding. People who have never played football. i.e you and most people who spend their life savings every year on season tickets for City, Macclesfield, Bury etc. can never understand the game properly. If you don't understand the game, your opinions don't matter and you only embarress yourself by shouting out random garbage like city are class. good pass or good goal. your arguments need development.

[11:53:17] <paul> p.s. who the fuck are you on about at Leeds

[12:00:40] <bart> peter resdale

[12:01:16] <bart> Yes I know nada about football

[12:01:40] <bart> but I love giving u shite about simple facts I know... hahahhahahahahaha

[13:20:54] <bart> [10:09:28] <paul> I still think city are shit. they haven't played anyone decent yet. they will finish 8 th. " We have played you and beat you, it must mean your team must be really shite"

I saw two Premiership games live last season, I lost the will to live during the second one...

Man City 0-0 Liverpool

You were both dreadful.

Man City are excellent at home, but a bit woeful on the road.

Just watch that statement come back around and bite me in the arse when they manage to come back from Fratton with all 3 points in the bag.
