Celebrity Big Brother's Chantelle and Preston split

Last updated at 15:59pm on 27th June 2007 commentIconSm.gif Comments

Celebrity Big Brother couple Chantelle and Preston have split after just 10 months of marriage, it was announced today.

The couple met on the reality show last year and wed following a whirlwind romance.

"After much soul-searching and tearful discussions we have sadly decided to end our marriage," they said in a joint statement.

"We hope we can always remain friends and still love each other but we both think we put so much pressure on one another to make our marriage work that it has ended up destroying our relationship. No one else is involved in our decision."

The couple insisted their relationship was genuine and denied they had rushed into marriage.

Former promotions girl Chantelle Houghton and Ordinary Boys singer Preston (full name Samuel Preston) met on the show in January 2006. They announced their engagement in April and tied the knot in August.

The couple sold the rights to their wedding day to a glossy magazine.

The statement said: "We know people will think we married too quickly on the back of Big Brother but the truth is that, what anyone thinks, we did have a whirlwind romance but we were genuinely in love with each other at the time and we will never regret our time together.

"We both believe in marriage and we never treated our vows or our commitment to each other lightly. We've spent hours and hours discussing whether we can salvage our marriage, give it another go, try harder, anything rather than give up.

"But we now both agree that we should go our separate ways. We are both young and we still have our lives in front of us. The last two weeks or so have been very upsetting and sad for us and our friends and family and we appreciate their support."

Chantelle was planted in the Celebrity Big Brother house as a "fake celebrity" tasked with convincing the other contestants she was famous.

She went on to win the show.

Chantelle, 23, and Preston, 25, have made a fortune since meeting on the show.

They sold the rights to their wedding for a reported £300,000.

Chantelle wore a bridal gown by Elizabeth Emanuel, who also designed the wedding dress for Diana, Princess of Wales.

The former Paris Hilton lookalike also wrote her autobiography, Living The Dream.

In January, Preston stormed off the set of TV quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks after host Simon Amstell mocked Chantelle's memoirs.

It happens on here all the time, lol.

I don't follow the show, so I shouldn't really post my opinion, but it's like a Survivor marriage. Can those reality show marriages really work...considering how they're so based in non-reality?

It's extremely unlikely - and was especially so on this occasion.

The writing was on the wall from the start, as Preston dumped his then fiancee in favour of Chantelle after this all kicked off.;)

I would say that alarm bells should have run in Chantelle's head, but I'm not sure how they would operate in a vacuum................................

No it's Justice for the uni people, thinking they will have a good time at the official ball, but ends up having to put up with Preston and his buddies.

So in other words they start out with a ball, and end up with balls..................

To be fair, they weren't bad from what i remember (didn't pay them much attention). Much better than 'the best queen tribute band in the world' on afterwards anyway.

Chantelle and Preston: Till (career) death do us part!

Those(in)famous blonde extensions have been replaced by a more classy chestnut-brown hairstyle. Her fake tan is less dazzling, the wardrobe less pink. She even left her peroxide roots behind - somewhere east of the M25 - for married life on the south coast. To no avail, alas. As the old saying goes, you can take the girl out of Essex, but not Essex out of the girl.

Which is why Chantelle (surname Houghton) could be found back in the much maligned county of her birth this week after splitting up with her husband Preston (Christian name Sam).

The former make-up counter sales assistant, barmaid, model and selfproclaimed Paris Hilton lookalike has now gone back to live with her mother Viv, 50, at the semi in Wickford, near Basildon, which Viv shares with her 36-year-old boyfriend Dean, who runs a removal firm.

"Chantelle needs some space," said Mrs H yesterday. "This is a private matter and she doesn't want to discuss it with anyone."

chantellePrestomBB_468x355.jpgThe couple met and 'fell in love' in the Big Brother house

Well, that's a novel concept for Chantelle. Her relationship with Preston, frontman with the Ordinary Boys band, was conceived on Celebrity Big Brother, consummated - allegedly - in a friend's flat with the paparazzi waiting outside, and consolidated with a cheque from a magazine which covered their nuptials.

On Tuesday last week, just 48 hours before they issued a statement informing the world their marriage was over, the couple were spotted strolling hand in hand through the Bluewater centre in Kent laden down with shopping.

As a metaphor for their business partnership - sorry, relationship - it would be difficult to beat. Regrets, they must have had a few, but none that immediately spring to mind, to paraphrase the lyrics of an old song.

Put simply, they part company considerably richer than when they met on live TV last year. Perhaps not quite the millionaires some reports have suggested, but very rich indeed - having ruthlessly exploited the seemingly inexhaustible appetite from celebrity magazines for the most banal gossip about reality TV "stars" like them.

Turn two such specimens into a couple and their earning power is far more than doubled. There was the £300,000 they received for selling the rights to their wedding in August, as well as a small fortune for interviews and photoshoots.

chantellePrestonBIG_468x638.jpgThis picture, taken days before they announced their split, speaks volumes

She netted a further £300,000 to write her autobiography, aged 23, plus £73,000 for the E4 television series Living The Dream, and £200,000 for modelling deals. He got £60,000 for a re-released single. His band, who had been dropped by their record label, suddenly appeared on the cover of the prestigious NME (New Musical Express) and a tour of shed- sized venues was hastily rescheduled to encompass bigger halls. Not bad for ten months' work, if that is the word.

With the new series of Big Brother already upon us, the Chantelle and Preston story will surely become required reading for anyone who wants to exploit their 15 minutes of fame to the full.

Showbusiness sources - as always - insist Hollywood wants to make a film about Chantelle and Preston. If they do, it would be a script rich in irony. Once upon a time, people were famous for being good at something.

Then came the people who were famous for being famous, but never before has someone become famous for not being famous at all. Such was the fate that befell Chantelle when she entered the Celebrity Big Brother goldfish bowl, posing as the ditzy lead singer of an imaginary girl band called Kandy Floss.

The meaning of the word "gynaecologist" was beyond her ken, she thought Dundee was in South Wales, and could barely comprehend the figure 2,000 (the number of women with whom fellow housemate Dennis Rodman claimed to have slept), squeaking: "That's more than 500."

After she emerged triumphant - admittedly ahead of a pretty unappealing field - Endemol, the programme makers, sent her to the Goethe Institute in London to pick up some German phrases to prepare her for a fleeting appearance in the German version of Big Brother. "Bonjour!" she declared on entering.

So, a "dizzy blonde" (her words) or as "sharp as a tack" (the verdict of George Galloway, another fellow contestant)? If we didn't know the answer then, perhaps we do now.

Indeed, even before Chantelle left our TV screens, shrieking "Oh my God!" on January 27, 2006, her mother, a legal secretary, was on the phone to PR kingpin Max Clifford. Would he represent her? Of course he would.

chantDM0307_228x503.jpg

"She made a great deal of money from her five minutes of fame," he says of his now former client. Mr Clifford is being modest. Chantelle's "five minutes of fame" has lasted the best part of 18 months, with the added ingredient of a certain "love" interest. It would be difficult to imagine two people with less in common than Chantelle and Preston; not that this is a prerequisite for a successful business. She came to the union having made a living impersonating Paris Hilton, acquiring the nickname Paris Travelodge - that is, a cut-price, chavvy version of the woman who is herself famous for being famous.

He was the serious minded, privatelyeducated middle-class boy with distinctly blue blood in his ancestry; his great-great-great-great (paternal) grandfather was Prime Minister Earl Grey and, across the pond, his (maternal) grandfather is a retired Princeton professor.

The only obstacle to a romance made in reality TV heaven was Preston's intelligent French brunette girlfriend Camille. How, she wondered, could Preston choose Chantelle, who had been engaged in a "sizzling" on-screen flirtation with her boyfriend, over her?

"He loved that I had a politics degree and a masters," Camille said in one interview. "We sat for hours discussing politics and the state of the world. Then he leaves me for someone so different."

Privately, however, Camille was less diplomatic about her feelings towards "Paris Travelodge". She was, she told one friend, nothing but "a blonde slapper". Who can blame her?

On the day that Hello! magazine published an "exclusive" with Preston revealing how he was desperate to marry Camille, he told GMTV, they had, in fact, split up. Priceless.

chantellPreDM2906_468x618.jpgHoneymoon period: Chantelle and Preston

The break-up, he insisted, had nothing to do with Chantelle. Almost before he had finished speaking, Preston and Chantelle were engaged and barely six months later they were married in a posh Mayfair hotel. And with each twist and turn of the plot, shares in Chantelle and Preston PLC rose.

She swept down a Gone With The Wind-style staircase covered in rose petals, dressed in a £10,000 Elizabeth Emanuel gown. The groom would later tell the assembled guests: "Chantelle is my one true love" before serenading the tearful bride with a rendition of The Ronettes' 1964 classic Baby I Love You. It was a performance worthy of an Oscar - or a cheque for £300,000, perhaps?

What Preston's family made of the wedding, we can only speculate. It was the first time Preston's mother had met Chantelle. Her father - Preston's grandfather - didn't even attend.

As Professor Samuel Hynes made clear from his home in New Jersey: "I'm not a big fan of reality TV. I'm only a professor."

The lovebirds moved into a townhouse in a regency square in Preston's home town of Brighton. Yesterday, the blinds were shut and the curtains tightly drawn. Preston was last seen putting out the rubbish a few days ago. Among the items deposited in the bin outside was a bag with the logo of a firm specialising in sexy lingerie (pink, no doubt).

The romance of the year, it seems, had deteriorated into violent rows. On one occasion, it is claimed, Chantelle flew into a rage and trashed an entire room.

"Preston ended up walking to a friend's house three miles away and crashing there. After that he didn't go back home for three days," said a source. Apparently, Chantelle walked out three times during their marriage, before leaving for good a few days ago.

One of the reasons (apart from the glaringly obvious incompatibility, of course) for the breakdown in their relationship, according to a relative, was that Chantelle never settled on the Sussex coast. "She wanted to move closer to London," said one of Chantelle's cousins.

"She wanted to be nearer her own family in Essex and she also felt it was important for her career. She felt it was too far away to be able to commit to work, and she missed seeing her mum as often as she would like."

So it was that the couple announced they were going their separate ways last Thursday after much "soul searching and tears". Their statement read: "We both think we put so much pressure on each other to make our marriage work, it destroyed our relationship. No one else is involved. We hope we can always remain friends and still love each other."

No one who saw them shopping together in the Bluewater centre two days before they went public about their marriage break-up would be in any doubt that they were - are - still friends.

As for the pressure on their relationship, during the frenetic weeks leading up to their engagement, Chantelle had only three days when she wasn't under an exclusive - and lucrative - contract to one magazine or another, and the number of days they spent together without a television camera or photographer in attendance can probably be counted on two hands. Actually, make that one hand.

"I don't get the impression that anyone is jumping up and down to offer Chantelle and Preston work," says Max Clifford. "Most people now see their relationship as a public relations exercise."

How ironic that within a year of getting married, they have already decided to cash in their chips and abandon their very modern relationship.

Split with Preston takes its toll on Big Brother's Chantelle

Last updated at 01:11am on 24th August 2007 commentIconSm.gif Comments (6)

She won fame as a vivacious Paris Hilton lookalike on Celebrity Big Brother with her fake tan and blonde hair extensions - but on a shopping trip yesterday Chantelle Houghton was looking a shadow of her former self.

Bearing a closer resemblance to Jordan than the hotel heiress she once emulated, Chantelle, 24, appeared gaunt and fed-up.

The strain of splitting with husband Preston is clearly getting her down.

It's been a tough year for the Essex girl and not even the best efforts of her companion, Big Brother's Nikki Graham, nor the bargains on offer in London's West End could cheer her up.

Chantelle appeared deep in thought, her smiling demeanour replaced by a more stern and serious expression. Perhaps she is rethinking her recent split with the Ordinary Boys singer Preston (full name Samuel Preston) - whom she is still "very much in love" with.

Chantelle told OK! Magazine that despite their decision to end their ten-month-old marriage: "We're still in love with each other, and that hurts so much because it just didn't work out."

The couple met on Celebrity Big Brother in January 2006.

At the time Preston was dating French girlfriend Camille, but the relationship was over within weeks of him leaving the Big Brother house and he was now declaring his love for Chantelle.

Cynics claimed the whirlwind romance was merely a publicity stunt, with the previously unknown Chantelle becoming a household name over night.

"It hurts me to think that people think my marriage wasn't real," she said.

"I shared a bed with him, I did things with him that you wouldn't do if it was a publicity stunt."

Chantelle said moving away from her family home in Essex to live in Brighton was the main factor that led to the premature breakdown of her relationship.

She said: "I found living in Brighton very hard...I had no family, no friends and it was a really hard time for me."

They said their decision to end their marriage came after "much soul-searching and tearful discussions".

From these pictures of the reality TV star, Chantelle appears to still be in the process of that soul-searching.
