I am a beginner piano player and am looking to purchase my own piano... i don't have a lot of space so a keyboard with weighted keys or an upright would be preferable... but mostly i want to get a piano that is able to play Coldplay songs the way they do.

 

i was thinking about the Yamaha GT20 but being a noob or novice like i am, i'd like to save some money.

 

so what piano should i get?

 

Or What else do i need to know before i buy a piano?

You might want to consider getting a refurbished upright grand. We have one (a Price and Teeple 'Cabinet Grand', mfg. in Chicago, ca. 1930), and it really has that grand sound! Sound qualities vary, so check around - some sound more like harpsichords, some have really smooth tones, and others give that characteristic resonant quality of grand pianos. Prices can be very reasonable, depending - estate sales often have upright grands, and you could check papers/online auctions, etc.

If you want the Coldplay acoustic sound, this is probably it - or go with the new jobs - exellent as well. If you want the Coldplay synth. sound, check out some of the fancy keyboards available from a reputable dealer (the one above probably does much of this) - piano alone cannot reproduce all of those fancy harmonic overtones, overlaid notes, and sounds available only if you have a warehouse of instruments! Much accompaniment from electronic elves:elf:

 

If you want the best, and like furniture, maybe Baldwin or Steinway makes uprights still?? Good luck, and happy hunting!

The thing about the piano above is that it has hundreds of top notch synth, bass guitar and drum sounds like coldplay uses because its a Yamaha. But Also it has Yamaha's new batch of piano voices which give it such a nice live piano sound its not even funny... also it has superb chorus and hall reverb to get you that full coldplay piano sound. Cant get that with just an acoustic. Also it has a 6 track recorder so you can record voices and make your own songs. Its just plain loaded with top notch stuff and its under 1,000 so its basicly a free piano...

I've got that piano! it's awesome. :D

Over the past couple months I've been trying to find a solid digital piano with weighted keys for the lowest price I can find. In that pursuit I've visited guitar center and similar stores very often and, I can tell you, I am in LOVE with that Yamaha DGX 620 you have shown above. I mean, it's sheer ecstasy going into that store, turning it on and going through my personal stock of coldplay riffs on the perfectly weighted keys.

Other digital pianos have the weighted keys but don't have the feel, sound and feedback that you expect from a real piano. But this one has such great natural sustain and touch about it. The keys are easy to press down, yet you get the nice heavy resistance and sound from the strongly hammered notes. I could go on and on...anyway, I'm saving up for one now (believe it or not some are available on ebay for less than $500), as at home I have to play on my dad's ancient, cheap, plasticky keyboard with one possible sound for each note, no matter how hard you hit it.

I agree that the one before last looks kind of shitty, but then again I have a worse piece of shit and I learned it okay. I suggest you try to talk them into a good compromise, maybe a cheap 88 key yamaha. It's the lack of range on my keyboard that's gotten on my nerves probably more than anything.

I was referring to the the crappy $99 61-key keyboard...I think that it might be a good idea for him/her to shop for a compromise between your beautiful yamaha dgx 620 and the piece of crap he/she's looking at, maybe a $200-300 yamaha or casio with 70-88 keys. You know...something cheap, but one that he/she won't regret getting in a year or so.

My advise would be to go with the YPG625 or similar, like Improvisation suggested.

 

If you are going to learn to play the piano and you can afford it, then a keyboard with full size keys, depth and weight is absolutely the best option (apart from the real thing).

 

And also don't get hung up on learning to play all Coldplay songs the way they do. It's fine learning their songs but don't ever let it get in the way of your own natural playing. Being yourself & unique is what it's all about.....for me at least.

Heh. I went to guitar center today with my parents this morning to sort out something with my dad's recorder.

 

Anyway, I had previously though that the one there that I'm interested in was the DGX 620...it turns out that it's the YPG 625. From the yamaha website they seem like practically the same thing...anyway.

its the YPG 625. if you get it you will love it let me tell you... the DGX is crappier to be blunt. the YPG625 is only like $750 and in the world of pianos that damn cheap for what your getting.

Thanks for all of the advice, :) i think i'll save up a bit more money and get something similar to the Yamaha YPG-625. i don't seem to be able to get the Yamaha YPG-625 as i can't find anywhere that ships it to the UK

Yeah the 520 and everything below doesn't have the weighted keys, in which case you might as well just get some $200- casio.

By the way, that yamaha digital piano...it's mine now! Today was my birthday and my parents took me completely off-guard when I came home from work. Possibly the best present ever. I can't decide what songs to learn next, until then I'll be abusing my small dictionary of coldplay songs (trouble clocks, the scientist, , amsterdam, ladder to the sun etc.) that sound a million times better.

It's a decent piano.. Only decent. But for ten pounds?

It will probably go up to at least £100, the others that ebay shop has sold have.

Sorry I'm not really an expert, why is it only decent? How does it compare to the Yamaha that's been talked about in this thread? Are Yamaha really that superior?
