SUM 41 rips off Coldplay

Featured Replies

Hello, not a frequent poster but I noticed there weren't any posts regarding the fact that Sum 41 rips off "The Scientist" in their song "Pieces". I've heard both songs many times (Canadian radio over does it with Sum 41), and hadn't noticed it, but the similarities are clear.

It's particularly interesting given that Sum 41's lead singer, Derek Whibley, is married to Avril Lavigne, who is in trouble herself for plagarism.

Oh well, Canada will always have Celine Dion.

They gotta a couple a good songs...

ahem...

(starting at about 2:00 it gets particularly interesting)

sum 41 = shit.... should make that into a t shirt too...

Good idea. How about a whole range of T-shirts on that theme?

Nope..each to their own....are you forcing your opinion on people again? :dozey:

When there's sh*t like Sum41 around it needs to be exposed, especially when Coldplay are being ripped off, which is disgraceful.

A great Radiohead song, High and Dry, but it really doesn't sound like The Scientist. Listen to it alone and you'll see that. The video connecting the two songs is heavily doctored in terms of song speed.

At the end of the day, Coldplay has taken ideas of varying size from other artists, typically of previous eras, but they will be the first to say that and have nothing to hide.

thats bad...sum 41 go make your own music...stop taking from COLDPLAY

Definitely. Especially if you're insulting Coldplay's music, as is the case here.;)

The Pieces doesn't sound like the Scientist either. it's the chord progression that was "borrowed" which in their turn they borrowed from High And Dry, albeit transposed.

this thread is ridiculous, to be honest. i've heard both songs a million times, and i never ever ever noticed similarities b/w Pieces and The Scientist. there are plenty of songs that have similar chord progressions, so what.

'The Scientist' is not exactly hard to accidentally rip. It's pretty simple. It's not a slight against the song; the simplicity is what makes it so beautiful, but if they had ripped off a song like 'Daylight' or something (Which has a strange key signature and chord progressions as well as a weird rythmn and melody) then I could see the point of this thread.

And yes... Sum 41 does indeed suck.

Pony that is a halarious clip!!! Thanks for the great laugh, I needed it.

lol

but seriously, sum 41 isn't horrible. i've only heard a few songs...much better than all the emo crap dominating the charts in north america.

ahem...

wow, i listen to both groups, i've heard both songs many times, and i never figured out the connection there. it's not a completely blatant ripoff but it sounds really similar in many places.

With the whole The Scientist and High and Dry thing, both songs are not really similar. The remix was supposed to make both songs blend together, not really point out the similarities. And yeah, like other people said, they changed the speed of the songs and changed the pitch in High And Dry.

yeah, they are in different keys, but you couldn't blend the two songs together the way it was done in that "remix" if they weren't similar. the chord progression and parts of the melody are very similar, although transposed into a different key. but i'm sure it was lifted unintentionally, please don't get defensive over this. i love both bands.
