TEMPLE of the DOG!

Featured Replies

This thread is for all those who cherish this one time collaboration between Chris Cornell with.......well basically everyone in Pearl Jam.

Who else thinks that Eddie, Matt, Stone, Jeff, Mike and Chris should tour together just for the hell of it? I think it would be coll because we would be able to hear Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, solo Chris Cornell, and most importantly, Soundgarden songs!

Best songs by far are Say Hello To Heaven, Hunger Strike, and Times of Trouble.

TEMPLE OF THE DOG!!

good thread Jacob! even though they had one album, that album fucking rocks, so therefore deserve a thread of their own. Love the songs you mentioned, always been a fan of Reach Down as well.

so a demo created by Stone Gossard prior to TOTD forming, later became the song 'Times of Trouble' for Temple of the Dog, as well as 'Footsteps' for Pearl Jam', both great songs, but which one do you prefer?

  • Author

Yes dear, in my research, I've made the link between Times of Trouble and Footsteps. I'd have to say Times of Trouble is ultimately the more powerful of the two. Footsteps is good in its own right, but I dunno, Cornell kicks up a notch with the full band, and of course his transforming of the demo into a power-ballad with a thunderous climactic chorus.

Of course though......One can only wonder what the band would sound like with Kim Thayil of SOUNDGARDEN playing in the band instead of Mike McCready.

I find it really interesting to see how much Soundgarden and Pearl Jam progressed after this album. Essentially, the cd is just Chris with the present members of Pearl Jam. But if you compare, lets say, The Avacado Album with this, there has definitely been water under the bridge between then and now.

'I got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since I fell apart. oh, I did, what I had to do, if there was a reason it was you..'

guess I'm a Footsteps girl myself today, love the raw simplicity of it, very emotional haha

.

..

....

.......

........

although Times of Trouble

'if somebody left you out on a ledge, if somebody pushed you over the edge, if somebody loved you and left you for dead ..'

the power of Cornell's vocals, uplifting song indeed...thats it, I'm not choosing! it depends on my mood which one I prefer I guess haha....yeah I know a cop out answer to my own question haha

and you raise an interesting point there Jacob, Thayil (from the kick ass band SOUNDGARDEN) in Temple of the Dog.. what would have been the effect of that? hmmm

  • Author

Oh yes, the entire band playing instruments that are obviously not plugged in, mixed with shots of them on the beach and in the woods. hahaha. They went too far!

Hm, yes yes, that incredible band SOUNDGARDEN. Well, I think that if Thayil was involved in the song Hunger Strike, it would've sounded like.......hm.....I think it would've had riffs akin to those found in the song 4th of July by SOUNDGARDEN.

For me, the whole Foosteops / Times of Trouble thing is a matter of mood too. Although right now, I'd have to say Times of Trouble is more so my cup of tea than Footsteps.

Speakin of Soundgarden and Kim Thayil, what are your five top guitar solos/riffs by Dr. Kim Thayil? haha

hmm ok let me think...

Slaves and Bulldozers

Birth Ritual

Jesus Christ Pose

Like Suicide

Loud Love

you know what would be cool, Soundgarden hoodies! ;)....I'd so wear it haha

  • Author

For me, it would be

Loud Love, Pretty Noose, Hands All Over, Outshined, and of course, Superunknown.

Oh god, a Superunknown hoodie would complete me. haha

While on the topic of Soundgarden, what would be your favorite Soundgarden cd?

yeah I reckon you'd look good in one of those Jacob hahah

Favourite album, has to be Superunknown

Just read this:

Former SOUNDGARDEN and AUDIOSLAVE singer Chris Cornell is currently touring in support of his new solo album, "Carry On", and playing a number of SOUNDGARDEN songs each night that have not been heard live for years. While a SOUNDGARDEN reunion isn't likely, Cornell told The Pulse of Radio that he'd like to see the band issue a rarities collection. "I've sort of left that in Kim (Thayil, guitarist)'s world, because Kim had always talked about wanting to be in charge of doing, like, a box set or a B-sides album," he said. "That was something that he had mentioned years ago, and I'm sure at some point he will want to do it, and that's I guess when it'll get done. I don't know how much actual unreleased stuff is out there, but there's definitely some SOUNDGARDEN rarities stuff that the average fan has not heard and it would be nice to put out."

  • Author

Hm, a boxed set would be most good! Soundgarden b-sides are hard to come by, and I also heard that Kim wanted to put out a rarities collection a while back. Hm just because a reunion "isn't likely" it doesn't mean it won't happen. After all, Ashcroft said the Beatles had more chacne of reuniting than the Verve, and he came crawlin back!

Yeah I have a feeling eventually there will be a reunion, hopefully it happens. I'm liking the idea of rarities & b-sides album as well, very cool....it would probably sell more copies than Carry On haha

  • Author

hahaha, oh......Carry On. Yea, I just think Cornell has hit a mid-life crisis or somethin. I dunno, at least he kicks ass live still. A live DVD of Soundgarden would be awesome too! Featuring band commentary for the entire duration hahaa. And also an accompanying music video collection (again with commentary) and documentaries and whatever else. Add on top of that a solid cd of b-sides, or two, and that would make one hell of a good purchase.

oh man Soundgarden definitely need a live DVD!! so would this dvd be an old performance, or live footage from the reunion tour?? hahah,.. yeah I should probably stop paying out (making fun of) Carry On, I've only listened to it once so far, but I aint gonna listen to it again any time soon haha

  • Author

Yes, you should definitely stop paying out to Chris Cornell. Leave the poor bastard alone! haha. Well, how about an anthology of concert footage, starting from Soundgarden's early days, through to the final tour. Done in chronological order. And for bonus features, all their music videos featuring commentary from all band members.

Now thats a dvd!! That sounds awesome.........Jacob maybe since you are best friends with Chris Cornell, you can bring it up, he might do it if you ask haha

  • Author

Well, I'll try and hunt down Kim Thayil and discuss the possibility with him. I think he'd be understanding. Chris is one intimidating dude. Even when I got hit autograph, I was scared to ask because he's so fuckin tall. haha.

good plan, might be hard finding him though, been keeping quiet now days it seems, no one really knows what Kim is up to ...oh god if you felt intimidated by Cornell I'd have no chance! He'd be like a foot taller than me haha

  • Author

Dude, the dude was like eight inches taller than me so, haha, I don't know how much taller he'd be for you. haha, I wonder if one day I'll get on the bus and then see Kim casually stroll on and sit beside me, reading the newspaper. I wonder if hes just living the normal life now...And also if he has cut his hair or not. haha

hahaha oh god thats funny! Kim living the normal life, it'd be weird seeing him with short hair I reckon.

and yeah it'd be like, 'look there's Chris Cornell with a small child,..oh wait thats just Carole'....I'm only 5'3 and a half hahah:uhoh2:

  • Author

hahaha, yea. Kim Thayil at the grocery store checking out a bag of milk. hahah It would be like "hmmmmm, oh damnit, do you guys accept VISA? I don't have any loose change on me." haha. It would be weird seeing such a mundane scene as that.

Oh, I'n my studies (shut up!) I've come across a number of parallels between The Verve and Soundgarden. Check these out:

- both bands started off doing really psychedelic, foggy, murky music, and became more accesible towards the end of their careers.

- similar subject matter

- the guitarist and lead singer both have difficulties with each other (extreme difficulties in the case of McCabe and Ashcroft)

- both bands are seriously underappreciated and are only recognized for their big singles (Black Hole Sun) (Bittersweet Symphony).

Believe it or not people, Bittersweet Symphony is actually one of The Verve's worst songs when putting it within the context of their collective works.

Also I'd like to take this oppurtunity to reiterate my mantra that Superunknown is the best American cd of the 90s. haha

would you feel differently about Bittersweet Symphony if it was less well known though? say for example it was a b-side. I agree it is definitely not The Verve's best song, or even their best song on urban hymns, but there's a reason why people are drawn to it, it's good! shame they are not credited for writing it haha

hmm yes interesting comparison between the two bands, never really thought of them being similar before haha...I'm sure there are more bands that have followed the same kinda path, just cant think of anyone right now, I'll get back to you on that one haha

and you could be well right about Superunknown being the best American cd of the 90s. Some people I guess saw Superunknown as Soundgarden becoming more 'commercial', but people should see it for what it is, them taking the next step and branching out artistically and creating a new mature sound, and yeah it payed off for them big time. This is an album where you can play it from start to finish, and it will keep you enthralled the whole way. So as Jacob would say.....buy it. now! haha

  • Author

Well spoke dear!

Yea, I gotta admit tho, first few times giving the disc a spin, I was not loving it. A few months later tho when I came back to it, I realized how good it was.

  • Author

Also, I'd like to take this oppurtunity to state that the soundgarden song of the day is Mailman. haha

I really wanna get their first cd Ultramega OK, but I can't find it anywhere. I hear its pretty good. Not Superunknown or Badmotorfinger good, but pretty fuckin good.
