Australian Prime Minister John Howard loses government AND seat in parliament in Labor landslide

Australia's Prime Minister John Howard has lost the election and his seat in parliament in today's general election.

Liberal leader John Howard was bidding for his fifth term in office but Kevin Rudd's Labor Party have been swept to power in a landslide victory.

Labor rival Maxine McKew has just claimed victory for Mr Howard's Bennelong seat in Sydney - the constituency he has represented since 1974.

It is expected Labor leader Kevin Rudd will claim victory later today.

Mr Howard is Australia's second longest serving prime minister with 11 years in office but he is now taking on the more humiliating title of being only the second prime minister ever to lose his premiership and parliamentary seat in 106 years.

Mr Rudd would be Australia's first new prime minister in a dozen years and has promised to sign the Kyoto Protocol on climate change and pull some troops out of Iraq.

With 50 per cent of the more than 13.5 million votes counted, the Australian Electoral Commission showed Labor had won more than 44 per cent of the ballots and gained a swing toward it of close to six per cent - enough to secure it a majority in the lower house of Parliament.

Participating in elections is compulsory under Australian law and more than 13.5 million people were expected to vote.

Mr Howard braved the rain and the taunts of opposition activists as he voted in his constituency.

He said: "I hope we will win. I believe we will win. It is in the hands of my fellow Australians."

However, Mr Rudd, a 50-year-old former diplomat, has been out in front throughout the election campaign.

"I have to say there is a strong mood for change in Australia. People want new leadership with a positive plan for the future," Mr Rudd said as he cast his ballot in his Queensland constituency.

Labor has sought to capitalise on the Howard administration's refusal to sign the Kyoto protocol on climate change.

Mr Howard has campaigned on his record of sound economic management.

Opinion polls during election day suggested Mr Howard was clawing back some ground but many people seemed to be simply tired of Mr Howard after 11 years of his rule.

Mr Howard's workplace reforms appeared to have alienated the aspirational working class voters who have long supported him.

Labor needs a swing of 4.8 per cent of the vote to capture the seats it requires to form a government.

Overall, early results indicate Labor leader Kevin Rudd is set to win the 76 seats he needs to form a government.

Booooooooo!!! I hated them both but I preferred Howard. Rudd is a dud. Even if Howard was going to retire, Peter Costello would make a great PM!

Labor has government in the lower house, the real question now is will they get power in the senate to pass through everything on default without opposition. i voted liberal in the senate and the greens in the house of reps, purely because i hate the labor "us against them" unionism. it shits me.

note to all: australia politics is dreadful. vote one anarchy (despite the irony)

I agree. One day, when I am prime minister lol, the country will be awesome. None of this dodgey business.

Rudd's campaign was crap. All he did was say bad stuff about Howard, he hardly ever told us what HE would do. So here's hoping he knows what he's doing.

I watched some video of the comedian 'Danny Bhoy' doing a parody of Australian politics, it was hilarious and scarily accurate - very much worth a look for on youtube.

you referring to the englishmen on here, cause the bitch sure aint my head of state. lazy inbred.

When did we allow Australia their independence then?

when did you (the english) have THE RIGHT to claim we shouldn't?

shes no head of state for me. shes done nothing for australia. no british monarch ever has. only called australia into war as pawns (aka gallipoli)

I reckon you guys should have gone for Rolf Harris or Dame Edna instead.

they'd probably make a better PM than Rudd or Howard. As said before the state of politics in australia is abhorent.

Well it could be worse - at least you don't have Gordon Brown!!

Australian politics isn't abhorent. It's just sometimes comical. The Australian system is one of the best in the world.

no. no. it's not. the fact that two party's can be so polarised into left and right is a shame. the lack of a central party is a disgrace.

you an aussie crestingwaves?

I think this guy will do a good job.

I think this guy will do a good job.

At what?

Reading up on it, all his campaign was to point out Howard's bad points and not state what he stood for.
