New Zealand was one of the first countries in the world to see the sun set on 2007.

 

In Australia, one million spectators lined the harbour to watch Sydney's annual fireworks spectacular.

 

Shrines across Japan held purification ceremonies to prepare for the New Year, known in Japan as "shogatsu".

 

Although Japan is celebrating the New Year on December 31, the "Year of the Rat" will not begin until 7 February 2008.

 

Many New Year's Eve revellers in the Philippines are opting for paper horns instead of the more traditional firecrackers, because of safety fears.

 

In Bangladesh, some may opt to go fishing to celebrate the New Year, as the government orders all bars to close early in the evening to prevent "immoral acts" .

 

The weather in Allahabad, northern India, on New Year's Eve was very cold, with high visibility.
