Hollywood actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence, a New York Police Department spokesman has said.

He was found unconscious at the apartment and pronounced dead," a police spokeswoman said.

Police are investigating whether the Australian actor, who earned an Oscar nomination for 2005 film Brokeback Mountain, died of a drug overdose.

The 28-year-old was found dead in the SoHo flat at around 1530 (2030 GMT).

US television reported that his body had been found surrounded by pills and police said they did not suspect foul play.

"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," police spokesman Paul Browne said.

Police said he had been due to have a massage at the flat.

The housekeeper went to tell him the masseuse had arrived and found him dead on Tuesday afternoon.

In September the Perth-born actor reportedly split from his girlfriend Michelle Williams, with whom he has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

He plays the Joker in the soon-to-be-released Batman film, The Dark Knight.

He also starred in A Knight's Tale and The Patriot, and played a suicidal son in Monster's Ball.

Just an after thought, maybe 1 of the mods should put 'RIP' in the subject title (I thought I had but obviously didn't!) - just incase people click on it thinking the thread's about's his new film or stuff he's done in the past etc.

I just read about this an hour ago.

I was shocked. 28 Years is just a terrible age to pass away.

I wonder what drived him to take an overdose...

I was really looking forward to seeing the new Batman film, but I'm sure I'll be watching it with mixed thoughts this time around.

What the hooey is going on? This isn't happening. #$^!#%$ I don't even know how to say what I'm thinking it won't make any sense right now. He used to be one of the smart ones before something happened to him a while back and he changed. I never thought it could go this far. Gah. :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

I remember when I used to watch him on Roar. Long before anyone had heard of him. Really dumb show, but I watched it anyway because of him. My very shortlived teenaged fangirl stage. Thought it was so cool when they started letting him make real movies. Now I wish they hadn't.

:bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

This is not happening.

God protect that daughter of his. Please.

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan apartment, naked in bed with sleeping pills nearby, police said. The Australian-born actor was 28. It wasn't immediately clear if Ledger had committed suicide.

He had an appointment for a massage at a residence in the tony neighborhood of SoHo, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. A housekeeper who went to let him know the massage therapist had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers gathered outside the building on an upscale block. Ledger's body was still inside, and several police officers guarded the door.

RIP Heath

I was totally taken aback by the news. I felt so sad for the remainder of the night. Not to say that I was a HUGE fan, but I could appreciate his work as an actor. He's done an amazing job at portraying The Joker in the upcoming film... and well... I feel for him. My thoughts are with him and his soul, his family and his baby girl.

There's nothing lonelier than feeling alone... I am sure this is what he battled with. Its a tough business... and I am sure he dealt with it the best way he knew how..
