I'm a bad host!

Featured Replies

I'm hosting this italian girl for the next 3 days (an exhange program of my school. Students from italy come here and we go there later this year). And i have a problem. Well, many of them to be honest.

First of all :

- She doesn't really speak or understand english well

- She hasn't eaten a single thing during the last 24 hours she's been here.. I think she ate something at school today but she said that she didn't like the food that much

- Because of her english i never feel like talking to her..so even right now we're alone in the house and i'm in my room and she's downstairs using the laptop boohoo.

I feel such a bad person :disappointed:

So any advices? How to make her feel more like home and how to make her eat something?

I've asked her many times if she's hungry but she always says "oh noo, i'm not hungry" or "oh no, i never eat anything for breakfast!"

Should i force her to eat something? My mum already told me to just put the damn food on the table and then say "Okay girl! we're off to eat now!" but that doesn't sound too good to be honest..

Besides, i often just mix different kind of foods together and then it'll turn into something good (sometimes) and i don't think she can handle it.. But i don't want her to starve to death :bigcry:

I saw she had cookies in her suitcase though.. so perhaps she'll eat those at least..

[/rant]

hmm ... what about if you go for a walk? I don't know ... show her some shops, take your dogs outside play with them for a looooong time and ask your schoolmate and his/her exchange student to join you, and i bet she's gonna be tired and hungry afterwards.

awwww I know how you feel >_<

I hosted a girl from belgium a few months ago (it was an exchange thing too) and she didn't speak english at all. The thing she could say was more or less only "Hi" and "Bye" :nice: luckely my mum speaks some french so they bonded haha but I really didn't want to be with her because we did so not understand each other booo and HAHA we took a walk the same day as she arrived :wacky: we really tried to talk to each other but we ended up just walking in silence because she knew NOW english :cheesy:

ANYWAY

maybe your girl is really shy so therefor she says no when you ask her if she's hungry :wacky: haven't you all eaten luch or dinner or whatever since she arrived? I mean if your whole family sits down to eat then she has to eat, right?

if your food is good then shouldn't she be able to eat it? I think it's more that she's shy than that she hates your food. Maybe I'm wrong heehee

oh! and one tip! My family and I played a lot of cards when the belgian girl stayed at our house and that was a really good thing for socializing

It's quite cold outside so i don't want to force her to go there..even if she says that she's not feeling cold ( i know it's cold out there!)

There are really no shops here..were nowhere near. But i'll take her to the center of the city on wednesday..so we'll see if she wants to do something there.

My friend came over with "her" italian yesterday and i'm not sure are they really friends with the girl or not  they seem to be able to stand each other though. And they're on the same class though.

We'll have this "welcoming" party tonight and there will be some snacks served so i'll be watching her if she eats something.. :sneaky:

go to a bar.. and make her drink a lot.. and then your drunk friend will be able to speak all the languages of the universe :wacky:

ok.. not really...

but the ideas above this post are pretty good

aw thanks. And indeed we haven't had a lunch or dinner or anything yet..but we never do! I know it sounds a bit bad but we only have a meal together during weekends.. So yup. I'll make some foodie tomorrow..she said that she likes chicken haha.

My mum said the same thing! that maybe she's just tooo shy to tell if she's hungreeh. I asked about it, too and she said that she doesn't eat much.

My mum's english sucks and my daddy doesn't speak any english at all, boo. I've studied a bit of italian though..so i understand some things but it's not like i actually can have a conversation in italian :uhoh:

So yup..tomorrow after school i'll make some chicken food. With rice. And she MUST eat it!!

Hahaha too bad i can't even get into bars yet :bigcry: i'm a baby :baby:

But i think we'll have a party tomorrow so maybe she'll end up drinking

that sounds good :wacky:

what the legal age to drink there?

oh well maybe she comes from a family where whole family eats together everytime they eat so she might just not be used to your family routine

haha chicken with rice sounds yummeh :cheesy: curry chicken YUMMEH  I think she will eat it because no decent person can say no to a good peice of chicken :wacky:

good luck with your non-eating girl

I hope she doesn't die from starvation because of her stubborn shyness :nice:

hey rolle, that's pretty sad what's happening over there. i'm sure the situation is like this because the girl's shy. i know what it's like, i was in england for two times and i lived at some family's as well, and i was really shy, and another problem was that i don't eat meat that much, just chicken. so i was shy just to tell them i'm a vegeterian, and i was scared of their reaction, but everything went ok then.

well i think that it would be ok if you took her to a supermarket and tell her to choose some food that she likes. and you could talk about music and stuff and try to find something that you've got in common.

Thanks for your comments.

I've actually had a few conversations with her..so now i know a little more about her. She doesn't seem that bad! But it's just that i need to speak sloooowwwlly and repeat everything 3 times so that she understands.

So we had the party tonight and i saw her EATING! oh my i was so happy !

I get your point Magda.. it must be hard for her! I know, because i was staying at another italian's home last year.. they never asked whether i was hungry or not. The food was always there without asking for it haha

But i'll try the cooking thing tomorrow..and then later tomorrow we'll have another party (also with some food) so she possibly can't be hungry after that!

But anyway, i'm vewy tired now so me goes off to sleep!

Thanks people for the responses

Oh and Lore, you have to be 18 to get into bars and buy booze. So later this year rolle becomes a party animal :wacky:

yaay she can eat! I'm so happy for you :wacky:

haha have fun at the party and make sure you show off your remarkable cooking skills :cool3:

Is she hot? :charming:

hahaha sowwwy i cant help myself :disappointed:

you can help her swallow, reno :wacky:

well.. she's a dancer :wink3:

Everything is going better now by the way! I think the problem here is that she'll only stay here for 3 full days..and that's not really much! So it's a waay too short time to get to know to someone i think.

We went out on a walk with my doggy and we talked about many things and it was fuuun  It's a shame that we're getting along now when she's about to leave.

Oh and i even cooked today! a whole meal..a steak and stuff.. too bad she only ate the steak and then some salad. No to potatoes and broccoli. But the steak wasn't a small one so she shouldn't be hungry! Yay!

I think i underestimated her english skills..she can talk and i understand what she's saying so all good. It's not perfect english but still. And i have to avoid using difficult words, too.

But she'll leave to Tallinn tomorrow so it's the time to say bye bye! And it's time to get my freedom back! hurray!

maybe she's on the internet talking about you :P

:laugh3: Or maybe its another coldplayer just playing tricks with your mind.

well.. she's a dancer :wink3:

what kind? :wink3:

heehee

it's good to hear that you two got along after all, rolle :nice:

what will they do in Tallin? :surprised:

I'm going to be on the other end of this in December. I'm going to stay with a family for a week in Italy whilst on a school trip and well, let's just say I really hope they speak English. I will try to make it as stress free as possible as I can for them though.

well.. she's a dancer :wink3:

I would say no to potatoes and broccoli too if I had the choice.

Oooh, you can only imagine :nice:

I have NO idea what they'll do there..probably shopping and then..something?

So she left today :nice: and won't come back here 'cause they'll go back to Italy after their stay in Tallin.

Ah, it feels so good to be alone again! and to be able to do whatever i want!

I would say no to potatoes and broccoli too if I had the choice.

yeah well i do understand that she doesn't like brocolli..but they eat potatoes there too! It shouldn't be too weird for her :( i like potatoes! And i can eat broccoli too..

Funny potato story.

I was at a camp in P.E.I. (a small island province in Canada, big vacation spot). And in P.E.I. they grow tonnes upon tonnes of potatoes. They are everywhere! And they had them at every meal! And when I said no to them they looked at me like I had 4 heads.

^ :laugh4:

potatoes are eaten everywhere. i wonder how's it possible we dont eat them every dsay. :uhoh:

well.. she's a dancer :wink3:

Exotic dancer?:wink3:

In any case, i hope she's bendy rawr! :whip:
