lGreatest Canadian singer/songwriters

Featured Replies

Who are your favourite?

I was thinking about this on the bus today as I was listening to City and Colour (Dallas Clark from Alexisonfire).

Other Canadian I think are amazing at songwriting include Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, and Feist.

...changed the name/subject of this thread...was supposed to be a survivor poll for Radiohead but I messed up...so I turned it into this.

Ron Sexsmith!

Briggins, I am downloading your January Mixtape - I'm looking forward to these each month, very cool of you :)

^ :)

Let me know what you think.

Probably. Not that uncommon of a name I'm sure.

^ yeah, some bloke who designs furniture for IKEA is named Chris Martin, too.

back to topic. i like Feist a lot as well as Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Tegan And Sara.

*cough* and my guilty pleasure Michael Bublé *cough*

^^Haha no worries, Grace, I like Michael Bublé as well. I love the jazzy feel to his songs! :)

Architecture in Helsinki are good.

how could i forget about Architecture In Helsinki?!?!

shame on me.

Architecture in Helsinki are good.

Architecture in Helsinki are from Australia.

Buble is hilarious. I love him. Great voice too, though I have to be in just the right mood to listen to his music.

Greatest songwriters... you're probably always going to end up with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Ron Sexsmith. Singers... too many to list. Though (and I may be biased) for sheer singing talent, I don't think you can top the Rankin sisters...

My personal favorite for both singing and songwriting: Loreena McKennit.

Damn they are from Australia. :laugh3: Something felt weird when I said that. My bad! :P

Aren't Stars Canadian as well?

Yep, they're part of the whole Broken Social Scene thing.

Well since this thread title is "greatest singer/songwriter" and Win Bultler sings and writes for Arcade Fire and he's from Texas, Canada doesn't get to claim him. :P

Oh right, Arcade Fire are good, too. And Broken Social Scene and Stars as well. :)

And I have one song by Axelle Red, she's ok too, I guess.

God Speed You! Black Emperor, some of the most emotional post rock music ever created... And their from Canada...

wow I can't believe no one's mentioned Patrick Watson yet...

^ Yeah he is a great artist as well. Hugely under rated, especially here in CAnada i find.

^ not really a singer songwriter though is he? Isn't it mostly instrumental?

^i think he's a singer-songwriter. he sings in most of his songs.

I don't know if The Weakerthans counts, but they are amazing and definitely worth mentioning!

Jason Collett is pretty good.

Patrick Watson won this year's Polaris Music Prize...and well deserved it is.

I LOVE Leonard, Joni & Bruce & Neil. Too many other good ones to list, but those 4 are royalty for me.
