What was your dumbest purchase ever?

Featured Replies

Reason for this thread? The hilarious story of four Coldplay tickets, as defined below. What is your dumbest purchase ever?

One of my favorite bloggers, debtkid, has posed the question of your dumbest purchases.

Oh, the dumb purchases I've made...let me count thee...

Dumb purchases probably account for about 50% of my prior spending. I'm much better with it now, but I have no doubt that about 75% of the 4,000+ in credit card debt I paid off were said dumb purchases.

Like the 75% of my wardrobe that I never wear - but hey, it was all on clearance! And all those unused lipglosses and eyeshadows...which are the exact same colors. But, but....clearance!

Or the dinners I paid for when I was dating my ex boyfriend (incredibly dumb in retrospect - isn't the guy supposed to pay anyway?).

Or all those books I purchased when I worked at a bookstore that I thought would make me look smart (seriously, what 16 year old actually buys the entire Barnes and Noble classics collection? I did).

But the dumbest?

The dumbest occurred when I was 17 years old. I had just gotten my credit card, aka, the Purple Monster. My friends and I were planning a huge roadie trip to follow Coldplay around the Midwest. Our first destination: Detroit. We were going to go up to Windsor and spend the night there with a friend who lived there, and go to the concert in Detroit. It was all planned out, all arrangements made, and I was charged with purchasing the $50 tickets.

Only I kinda-sorta forgot. Until the day after the sale was over, and all the tickets were sold out.

I felt terrible. So I said, no problem, no big deal...and went to an online ticket broker to purchase tickets. And of course, they offered those awesome 3rd row orchestra pit tickets. How could I resist? I mean, they were only $600 a piece. And I bought 4 of them. Without consulting my friends. For a grand total of $2,400.

Of course, the next day when I told them at school, I barely made it out of there alive. They refused to pay. But the tickets were non-refundable, of course. We went and only one of my friends ended up giving me all the money.

It could have been worse. It could have been a terrible experience. But it wasn't - I ended up getting a call the day after I purchased the tickets saying that there was a mistake and the seats were not actually available - but the front row center tickets were. Which was awesome. We had a fabulous time in the end, but I don't think it was worth the $1,500 odd dollars that it cost me, plus all the interest.

Thus making it, the dumbest purchase I've ever made.

Ummm money well spent I say!!!

Buying the same DVD twice, once from amazon and once from ebay.

don't remember ... probably a CD or two, some plush animals, clothes... bah, stuff like that, but nothing serious.

I don't remember. I usually buy things that are a nice price, even if it might be something I won't use forever. But I'm very picky when it comes to buying things, especially clothes. It has to be absolutely perfect or something that is one of my top priorities, if not then I don't get it.

i'm usually pretty good about what i buy, and rarely regret anything. but the things i regret most are certain articles of clothing, i guess, that either don't fit exactly right but i love anyway or clothes that i like, but really only buy because it's a good price. and the other half of that coin is that i don't like to get rid of anything, so i've still got all of those clothes AROUND somewhere, despite the fact that i don't wear them much or they don't fit anymore. i have an unbelievably hard time parting with things.

any kind of decoration articles.

i was so fascinated with stuff to just have around that don't even have a function. like... little figurines or flowers or crap like that.

wasn't that expensive, though.

oh, and that dredg album i bought years ago. waste of money.

i don't have a lot of money since i'm a kid so i'm not really making big purchases yet.

i'd say 2 strokes albums

A kite in grade 5. I wanted to buy a Star Wars book but mom told me to buy the kite instead...and there were promises of family outings to fly the kite. But we only flew it twice.

Although once I did attach a Lego man which was cool, he became a celebrity amongst other Lego men because he was the first one to take flight.

Oh a musician's income, I usually only buy things I really want, so I haven't regretted a lot of purchases over the years. I've regretted spending too much money at pubs though. I'm more generous than my wallet will allow,so I buy alot of drinks for people, but they do the same for me so, I really can't regret ti too much.

you regret buying 2 of the strokes albums?!?! :stunned:

sorry, i just didn't think this was possible.

they're ok. its just every song sounds the same to me. there are better albums i could have spent it on

Yeah food and drinks can be such a waste sometimes.

I was about 10 or 12, I think and still then obsessed with Star Wars. It was a while before those updated reissues of the originals. We were in Maine going to all those factory outlet and discount stores they have down there, and I found a copy of the complete soundtrack for all 3 movies for not much money. It was a lot of money for me at that age though. Anyway, I was over the moon.

So, many days later we get home and I go to listen to it, when I notice a couple of little details I hadn't before. There's a part about adapted and arranged by someone or other, and I think a line about licensing.

It wasn't the original soundtrack. It was all midi versions of the major parts of the soundtrack. They were terrible on an unbelievable level of terribleness. Basically a guy with a really cheap keyboard. And yes, as far as I remember it said it was official merchandise. :freak:

Ouch! That's terrible, they always prey on the young'uns.

I say the dumbest purchase was any of the many purse/handbags I bought from ebay or purse parties. I never liked any of them and they were ugly or out of style within the next month. Trends make my head ache. But I just gave away all of them to charity, hopefully someone else can enjoy them.

Oh yeah, hamsters too. My roommate wanted a pet so we went out at 3 am and bought to dwarf hamsters. Aaaaand we got rid of them within a month. Aggressive and not friendly little monsters!

Dwarf Hamsters?? Is there such a thing?:laugh3: (oh well - maybe that's why their temperament is such as it is/was..) And how did you get rid of them?

My dumbest purchase - was writing a check for two dark chocolate candy-bars, and having forgot to transfer money into the account. The mistake cost me $1.88 plus $25.00 NSF charge! (making each about $13.44 - that should cut down on my chocolate desires!!;))

I don't do dumb purchases as such, but i have bought plenty of things i dont end up using.

I'm in the same boat, buying some cheap CDs from supermarkets, only discovering that in small print on the rear, hidden underneath a stuck-on barcode, the words "please note these are not original recordings and are either live recordings or re-recordings using one or more members of the original band", so basically the cds were a lot of shit.

Why on earth would you do that? :stunned:

When I was in Lisbon I got blagged into buying some fake... weed.

I threw it away.

Later on in the night, someone else offerd me some. I brought again, it turned out to be fake again. The a fake Policeman stole 30 euros of me......

Dumb Purchase... at the end of the day I was 75 €´s down

Yeah probably selling you grass..:P

What does it cost for an ounce over there?

Yours Truly, Angry Mob.

Thankfully I downloaded that album and never bought it.

Lucky. =/

I was so disappointed...I spent $12 on that...and that's a lot when what you buy is really sucky...
