Older Fans of Radiohead:

Featured Replies

The recent complaints about Viva la Vida and Coldplay's "new sound" have got me wondering about what Radiohead fans said around the release of Kid A. I was only eleven at the time, so I don't remember anything about it. But if some people are disturbed by this transition for Coldplay, how horrible was the reaction to Radiohead's transition?

good question. i'm sure many people were originally horrified by Kid A. i was too young at the time as well so i can't be sure. but the transition from OK Computer to Kid A was even more drastic than this (so it seems right now). but now Kid A is viewed as their best album by many. very good comparison... i'm interested to see the responses to this.

Oh, Radiohead lost a lot of fans because of Kid A.

I had a minor "What the f*ck?" moment myself when I first heard it.

But on the other hand, the band kept most fans hooked, and gained a whole different audience as well. I think they're even bigger now (in terms of 'fans' and 'respect') than 10 years ago when they were touring their most succesful album to date.

There are three types of Radiohead fans.

1) The ones that like just about everything they ever did (like me)

2) The ones that only like the old stuff (up to OK Computer)

3) The ones that only like the new stuff (everything since Kid A)

I know people belonging to all of these categories.

i'm in group 1! when i first started listening i was in group 2 but now i couldn't imagine enjoying radiohead without listening to Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief.

hopefully, this album will have the same effect on coldplay as kid A did on radiohead. well at least i hope so :P

I got into Radiohead around Kid A, so I don't know how I would have been affected if I was into Radiohead sooner. I imagine I wouldn't have cared, though.

Group 1 here! I admire any musician that show innovation and is exploring and expanding their boundaries of artistry. That is a sign of a true artist. The Beatles did it, so many changes there! Radiohead, yes, I love them! Coldplay, I just hope that this their true exploration or expansion of their musical boundaries and not influence of the producer, that is what I can hear in these, well, especially the first song. Violet Hill. Now will have to wait to hear the whole album. I do love Coldplay and will continue to do so, no matter what they do! I just have faith and hope that one day they can also leave the greedy EMI and become truly independent artists.

Number 1! But I didn't know that Radiohead existed back in 2000. :(

Im in group 2 only cuz I still havent exactly listened to any newer albums except In Rainbows...

Please dont kill me, I just havent had the time or money

I love all the albums Ive heard though:

Pablo Honey

The Bends

OK Computer

In Rainbows

I only got into Radiohead maybe 2 years ago, but I don't think X&Y ---> VLV is as drastic as OKC---> Kid A.

Well put.

I'm in group 1 as well. But I do have a major bias towards Kid A and Amnesiac.

I wonder if the people who got into Radiohead later prefer the later sound over the earlier albums?

I haven't got In Rainbows yet....:embarassed:

yea i was thinking the same exact thing after i thought about it more...

and rick8... HOW THE HELL HAVE YOU NOT HEARD IT YET?!?!?! hahahaha thats insane... it's an amazing album and i feel like i hear it playing everywhere i go. that's actually an ACCOMPLISHMENT if you haven't heard it... i don't know how you've done it.

I dunno, just been to tight to buy it..:p

I'm guessing they would like stuff like The Bends and OK Computer (and In Rainbows) more than stuff like Kid A and Amnesiac.

Rick honey, you are aware that they gave that away for free. :P

They lost many fans when the new stuff came out, but they also gained a lot of fans and loosing people that won't let you express yourself isn't really a loss. If I don't like a song I hope they don't really give a fuck because it was something they felt the need to create and they shouldn't be ruled by what others want.

..................:shocked2:

you amaze me... those are the words i have been trying to come up with ALL DAY.... PLEEEEEEASE go onto the 'viva la vida = beautiful" thread and post that to low76 who has been crapping on coldplays soundchange non stop...

I have never understood why people get mad when bands try something new. Do they ever stop to think how exciting it must be for the band. How walking out on stage every fucking day for the rest of their lives and playing nothing but Creep would make them want to jump off a fucking bridge. Artist have to evolve. OK so not everyone is gonna love it, but who the fuck cares. Someone that hates Kid A might love HTTT but who cares, the point is the band felt the need to make it and that's all that matters.

Well give me yours then..:p

That's not necessarily true, though, many Radiohead fans rank Kid A and Amnesiac higher than The Bends and OK Computer.

Yeah sure you will..:P
