Coldplay's new music style. Do you like it?

Featured Replies

I don't think its that new a style. Just more refreshing.

i completely agree. frankly, i was expecting much more of a departure from their earlier stuff, but i'm fine with the slightly tweaked style that they've got going on so far. yeah, violet hill is a bit heavier than past songs with distorted guitars etc, and viva la vida uses a wider instrument base without the classic guitar-bass-drums-piano that we're used to, but i think that both songs are classic, vintage coldplay, with that distinctive coldplay sound, just presented in a new way. life in technicolor is the same to me: very distinctive coldplay, yet completely fresh, and the version of lost? we have is extremely coldplay to me. now ASARY is...different, but i find it hard to judge their entire "new style" on a b-side.

the main difference i find with the new songs are the lyrics. they're not as personal and heartfelt as they were before, at least on violet hill and viva la vida, and they've taken a whole new direction. but i think so far, they're pulling it off beautifully.

this is why i'm dying for the full album even more than i was before: i want to see if this is completely redone coldplay (i don't think it will be, given what we've heard so far), or whether it's just coldplay evolved a bit (which i love and am perfectly thrilled with, personally).

i like every song they've put out so far but i said not sure based on the fact that i haven't heard it all

Well from what we've heard so far, the music is still 'Coldplay'ish...it has just evolved more and matured and they are experimenting with their sound. I don't think we can totally say it's a whole new musical style based on the few songs we've heard. I mean, VH and VLV are like opposites, so who knows. I guess we'll have to wait to see. :)

Actually, I was quite taken aback by Viva La Vida (in a delightfully rare way). I mean, I very much enjoyed VH, although I don't think it had quite the surprise factor that had been building up for so long. I expected the White Album at that point the way people had been speculating, and to me it pretty much just sounded like Coldplay in a new studio, on a new album (go figure) - nothing too out of the box, but it sounded good and I'm enjoying repeated listens nonetheless. I guess you could say that Viva La Vida did what VH didn't deliver on in my opinion, in terms of something notably "different". I absolutely love Viva La Vida with regard to it's uniqueness. I'm not sure what to think about it in context to the rest of the album as I've obviously not heart it yet, but on it's own it's indeed colourful and refreshing, not to mention beautifully mastered.

It was interesting recently when I heard Chris refer to Parachutes as more "Jeff Buckley" when describing the differences in the albums. Although I love that dry, raw honesty that comes through on Parachutes, I'm conflicted by wanting to see what else they can do while at the same time missing the more pure, minimal earthiness of Parachutes. In the end, it's Coldplay, and most often I'm happy with really anything they create. Chris' voice is addicting and carries my interest no matter what he sings. I very much respect the creative ambition of the band and I'm willing to let them take that ride without being too punitive. Maybe one day there will be a return to the days of "Sparks". I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility as they seem to be very cognizant of how their songs come across.

I really like the new style, I would get really bored if every one of their albums sounded the same. I like that they give fans an option of the "type" of sound they want to hear, there's a variety in the albums. I can't wait to hear all of VLV and listen to what all the songs sound like.

i'm just going to say this nice and bluntly...

I LOVE COLDPLAY!

doesn't matter - they're still freakin' awesome!

I totally agree. Most of us here have only heard 3-5 new songs, and they've all been COMPLETELY different from each other, yet somehow we're judging this "new coldplay sound".

EXACTLY! :D Wait for the record, the judge. It's only a few weeks away!

I voted 'not sure' as I have only heard 'violet hill'. But that is a crackin' song so the rest is looking good.
