bmn
Personally I think that their new music style is bad. The chorus at the beginning of the song and the new instruments simply don't fit Coldplay. What do you think?
FedEx
I think it's awesome and very refreshing.
Hyphin
I don't think its new. It's Coldplay. Heartfelt, strong, and played with every muscle in their bodies. That's Coldplay. And that's this music.
just_a_spy
Yeah, kinda the same for me here. I mean it's different, but the same. Deep down I can still feel the original style and substance, just kinda packaged differently, that's all. If that makes any sense.

The chorus at the beginning of the song and the new instruments simply don't fit Coldplay. What do you think? Chorus? Are you talking about any particular song? and what new intruments are you talking about? It's not as if they've never used strings before. MafHoney
I like it. I hate when artists/bands keep coming out with the same cd over and over and over again. It's boring and doesn't keep my attention very long. I admire bands who change it up and try different things that may be out of a particular comfort zone. bmn
>Chorus? Are you talking about any particular song? I'm talking about the 30 second intro at the beginning of Violet Hill. >and what new intruments are you talking about? I didn't explain clear enough. I am talking about the sound of Coldplay. There's much more drums than usual in Violet Hill and unusual instruments are used in A spell a Rebel. Of all the released songs I only liked Viva la Vida. crestingwaves
I love it. Its still Coldplay just the more pyscho, heavier side. Like theyve been let off their leash. Lol, I also like how Chris just says 'yer, 2 for 1' and EMI are like "WTF!!? What are you doing?" Chris: "Meh.." It's great. Slightly off topic but great. Btw, you havn't heard all the album or the b-sides yet, so don't be so critical just yet..it's still early days. (But so far so good in my opinion)
Shawndorman
Coldplay is exploring new musical territory as all good artists do, and it's really refreshing. I'm a big fan of the direction they're taking.
busybeeburns
I don't think its that new a style. Just more refreshing.
talkingonsquareone89
As a few mentioned already, it's refreshing to hear something new instead of the same-old sounds and materials. I believe many artists before that have succeeded in their field of work chose to seek out new discoveries and go beyond their current abilities. Times change and so do the mindset of everything else... Anyway, good for Coldplay to be venturing out in that kind of direction (although they still have yet to stray FAR from their "typical style." At least for now you won't be (too) bored with them. ((Don't forget, the rest of the album has yet ot be released! Who knows...some of us could be right/wrong about it all. :dozey:))
the hitcher
I say good on them for changing their direction/sound. Obviously not everyone is gonna like it but they had to take a risk, 4th album and all that :D I'm personally loving what i've heard so far! :D Can't wait the hear the whole album now! Darlene_Ihnfsa
more drums in VH i've read people complaining about it, just the opposite way, that there's few drums in it  about the 30sec entrance i think that is that with jonny solo what makes the song cooler. :) the opening is a so Pink Floyd influence imo. i think we are too precipitated judging a whole new album just from the song leaks we have heard... do the same in a different way is innovate anyways so... (just compare it with other arts like architecture.. :idea2: there had been many revolutions just displaying same things in a different order. i expected another sound of them but well as it is still Coldplay sound i like it. :)
M-Scott
Long time lurker. Should probably come stronger with a first post. Nonetheless, I'm a fan of great music. The direction a band decides to go in is of no consequence to me - I only hope it's great. This album, thus far from what I've heard, doesn't necessarily take a new direction, but rather an "Eno" direction. I agree with those who say it's still Coldplay - which means to me that it's still great. Even my least favorite from any Coldplay album is far, far above the quality of main stream. So whether it's a guitar, a synth, a drum machine, a piano...doesn't matter. I believe Coldplay to be one of the greatest.
freddyfu123
Honestly speaking I am going to wait until the whole album to see how it is. I like some of the new songs like VLV but I don't like Violet Hill that much. But the lyrics are still as good as before. Hope I can see a great new album from Coldplay! Just cant get into that song at all.

It's refreshing that they're trying something different, testing the boundaries, mixing things up. I love how some people complain about this supposed "new style" but if Coldplay popped out another X&Y or AROBTTH people would complain about them being stale. noelbest
I have mixed feelings about the new songs. I love the drums on violet hill but hate the reverb and vocal effect on his vocals. He has a great voice and doesnt need to alter it in the studio. Lost and Viva la Vida are good songs. A Spell A Rebel Yell is a horrible song. I hate that song and in my opinion its the worst song since Oasis - She is Love. I cant listen to again. i was really hoping for soem proper rocks songs like One i love. anyways, i am sure we will get some really great songs out of this album. I cant wait. .Jeanfr.
The "heavy coldplay is gone, that's what i can think up until now, with the songs we've already listened..no more "square ones", "White Shadows", or "Politiks" anymore. I'm not sure if i like the new style a lot, but on the other hand i like the songs so i think it's OK.:smug:
TraceOddity
I realise saying 'it's just not a Coldplay song' is a figure of speech, but really...it IS a Coldplay song, whether you like it or not. Personally, I love it, but to each their own.:) When artists evolve and grow they HAVE to try new things or else become stagnant. he boys are very aware of their fans, but they have to do what they do musically to please themselves. Otherwise, they really have sold out.
Mimixxx
I realise saying 'it's just not a Coldplay song' is a figure of speech, but really...it IS a Coldplay song, whether you like it or not. Totally agree, it is Coldplay and still unmistakably so too, part of that is the fact that Chris' voice is very distinctive but also because the songs are still...real, with melody and heart. Someone else said here, it might have been Ian, that it's more refreshing and I totally agree. If they'd made another AROBTTH (as much as I love it) I'd have been very disappointed. JM-42
Like they said, not everyone is gonna be happy with the new album. But come on! don't you think Viva La Vida is such a great song? Can't wait for the live version!
Josh42
Honestly speaking I am going to wait until the whole album to see how it is. I totally agree. Most of us here have only heard 3-5 new songs, and they've all been COMPLETELY different from each other, yet somehow we're judging this "new coldplay sound".
