ohhh you're talking about eternal damnation.

i'll choose to believe in something that doesn't send good people to hell, rather than something that sends rapists, murders, george w. bush, with an ounce of faith to heaven.

there's no such thing as a good person. everyone sins, and it's only because of what Christ did that people are able to have eternal life. no one can earn it, or even come close. it's given as a gift to those who believe in Christ and choose to live for Him.

wow all this hate is really kind of disgusting. i'm catholic, but i respect everyone's opinions in regards to religion. i think the bible thumping christians from the bible-belt of the united states are in many ways full of their own shit, and completely unreligious. that being said, "bible thumping christians" in it of itself is a stereotype, and not all people from this "bible-belt" act in this manner.

there was a homily at my church and my priest said we should basically try to convert others...i completely disagree. believe in what you want to believe, dont shove it in others faces. the greatest human ability is to be able to come to your own conclusions when presented with the unknown. let everyone else come to their own conclusions. don't say stuff like, "oh i fear for your soul" or "i hope god saves you". thats self serving garbage.

don't give bs in these discussions either, like someone here said the song could be interpreted to mean coldplay dislike jesus or something. his reason was that jerusalem and rome had to do with jesus's crucifixion. come on man, thats a ludicrous interpretation, and cannot actually be what you think. im not even going to bother telling people my interpretations, but if you are going to pretend to be giving an opinion, dont...give a real one.

but yeah, everyone believe what you want to believe, but be respectful as well. theres no need to refute anothers beliefs, unless of course like i did myself, when the person is offering non sensical reasoning. there's nothing about crucifixion in the entire song, and i can't understand any person thinking so without a good argument for it.

if someone thinks im being a hypocryte, feel free to say it. but i think im being pretty reasonable. with a discussion like this, just be respectful and truthful, not petty and foolish.

I'm sorry to have started this discussion, then. I was hoping to share with others how one could interpret SOME (not all) of Coldplay's songs as having a deeper spiritual meaning to those who are spiritual, but unfortunately this has turned into an argument against Christianity. I can only hope and pray that those who do not believe will one day accept Christ before it's too late., and as far as quoting the Bible, I hope you truly ponder the words that the apostle Paul spoke to the people of Rome who had rejected God.

Fucking hell man (no pun intended...) Before it's too late for what??? Why do i have to believe in a fictional tale intended to control and secure power over the masses, i mean, i believe that there something bigger than us up there but i don't care for calling it Christ, Jehova, Buddha or whatever....

I'd much rather accept CHRIS... MARTIN :)

Well I'd much rather accept a free Aston Martin but ya don't hear me bitchin'.

Yeesh:rolleyes:

@FootyFan10 - I hear ya man

Because this is more serious than you make it out to be, I wouldn't be a very good person if I didn't try to warn people.

Get down off your f**king high horse for a second or two.

People like YOU are the reason that:

a) your religion is dwindling and losing support in all corners of the world

b) there is so much religious hatred

c) I dislike arguing with religious people.

The 'save you' ethos is nonsense and is a way for religious people to feel superior to others. It gives you a kick, and don't deny it. I have NO problem with the variety of faiths and non-faiths this world demonstrates in its diversity and no issue with any person practicing any religion. What I do have a problem with is people that try to force what they personally believe onto others, especially through such preachiness as the classic "I hope you learn the truth before it's too late."

Don't you realise that these stories are all invented and manipulated in such a way as to control people? If Christianity worked in any other way (and the same is true for other religions, too) then its base would not survive because it is the myths of Heaven and Hell that keep people 'in line' and you are no different, and if you think you are then you are kidding yourself.

What you also need to understand is that people taking the Bible as canonic evidence of God's existence is like courts taking a defendant's statement as the truth in every case without question.

This is not a flame, this is a reasoned post; you are bang out of line saying that kind of thing and it annoys me that people like you are allowed to get away with it on the grounds that the invisible guy YOU believe in is one of the more popular delusions. If you had been brought up in the Middle East you would be Muslim, in Asia you would be Hindu, and in a family that taught you logic and reason you would be an agnostic or atheist. Instead, the fact that you were brought up in the USA in a Christian environment makes you sure to the point of arrogance and condescendance that you are right and everybody else needs rescuing.

You disgust me. End of rant.

The only thing I'm going to say in response was that it wasn't meant for me to sound superior to you, it was out of sheer compassion that I said that. I wouldn't risk getting flamed and yelled at if I didn't care. I'm sorry for offending you.

yeah

"Because this is more serious than you make it out to be, I wouldn't be a very good person if I didn't try to warn people."

the reason why this quote is upsetting to some of us is that you're assuming your beliefs are better than ours.

i'm sure many of us have done our research and maybe even tried christianity or other religions... we just choose not to follow them.

but when you say things like that you're basically saying "my religion is superior than what you believe."

it's great that christianity works for you...

but for some of us...

who've also spent as much time studying religion as you...

we don't appreciate it when you assume your beliefs on us.

it's kind of the same thing as if a buddhist threatened you with a worse reincarnated life. whether it's offensive, or you think it's just plain silly... it doesn't work.

Sheer fucking compassion. You don't know me, and I don't want your compassion, and that quote proves everything I just said to be right. Even in a post where you're making an effort not to come across so, you end up demonstrating your arrogance and condescending nature.

I will put it as clearly now as I possibly can and apologise for anybody else I offend in the process.

I think what you believe is absolute NONSENSE, so please stop implying that I will one day see the light and agree with you, before I get REALLY offensive.

This is HOPEFULLY my last post on this thread. Hopefully.

Fine.

I believe in Dog. As long as I put faith in Dog, all is well.:laugh3:]

Their music has a spiritual side, yes - obviously, the Roman Calvary, and many references as such - it's common territory for most of us, being familiar with church and their teachings and sermons. I think we all harken to when we were children at times, and get comfort from some of those messages - didn't the Beatles use this as well? Lady Madonna? Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom; let it be.? The bible is really a novel, and has some gripping tales that resonate well in a compassionate sense within all of us - hence it's popularity for the very beginning. In many ways, early Christianity was a path of compassion and inclusion - welcoming those who felt left out of Roman society, those who felt dissed, those who were middle-class or poor, and were left to only an eternity in Greek Hades under the older pantheon of Gods. Women had equality in the early church, and could become leaders. It was egalitarian and compassionate, offering a more humane future for humanity.

But I see something else; common threads of human thought and action, that soften the blows of harsh reality, and bring us greater success through examples of selfless giving, and thought-provoking moments of reflection. Balance in a world of work and focus. So, everything's not lost - it's just out of focus at times. And when bad actors have grabbed power and are in need of correction, this is a time for action. After all, wasn't it Jesus who turned the table of the money-lenders over in the temple? Wasn't it Jesus who dared to be King of the new Kingdom of Jerusalem, against the Empire?? What does this say about corrupt empires that rule from afar, with corrupt monetary policies? Hmm..

I think it is helpful for non-Christians to know that Christians (well, Catholics at least ) are taught something called "Warn the sinner." This basically says that if you see someone doing "wrong" that you are obligated to warn that person that they are doing wrong. I learned this in religious classes I had to take in grade school.

So I think this guy is trying to "warn the sinner" because he was taught that you are supposed to do that as part of your faith. It's something that you "have to do." So it is supposed to be out of compassion. But it is mandated compassion. So it seems. So I think he is not trying to be condescending, but unfortunately, his faith sort of requires it? I'm not making any sense at all. I know.

Hi guys.

I'm from a planet called Rand McNally in the South Atlantic.

We all know Lord Xanzabar trapped a billion Martians in Mount Etna 9 trillion years ago.

When it explored, we got the Bothans, first rulers of Earth.

Many years later, humans emerged.

I believe in our Kryptonian overlords.

On Rand McNally, we wear hats on our feet and hamburgers eat people.

True story.

Tell me otherwise.
