Jonny Buckland's "Pandora Box"

Featured Replies

Jonny has something on his pedal board which he calls a pandora box. What is this "Pandora Box" ? does anyone know what it is responsible for?

Its the large stripped box down the bottom

I can't be 100% sure but it is most likely a "one switch does all" kind of thing. Different songs call for multiple effects and you can program one switch to turn on those needed and off those not needed. He probably has them programmed song by song.

Thats exactly what it is. A Multi effect switch board. It is very similar to The Edges rig....only his is way way more complicated.

Oh I see, so its probably custom built just for Jonny and you need a lot of money to build one:laugh3: I thought maybe it went to his rack units but i couldn't find a lot of information on it.

Thats a pretty cool pedal board :)

Yeah it is a well set up design, and some of them probably do go to his rack units "(I think he has 3?).

This is nothing that the average guitarist would have the money or knowledge to be able to reproduce.

If there are any Editors fans here Chris Urbanowicz uses a board like this exclusively and most of his actually pedals and effects are offstage no where near his actual board. I have a pic if anyone wants to see.

Yeah, post it up!

first time I've ever put in attachments...hope this worked....

If it did you can see he has a Delay and tuner on his board the rest are mixed effects I assume and I don't know if you can see well enough but he "names" his effects after how they sound....

blah...they arent working...I'll try again in a bit sorry guys

Edge is exactly the same. All his pedals and effects are in a giant rack behind him on stage, and he uses his box for all the songs, which are all preset into the box. I'll post picks up soon.

Ok here is Chris Urbanowicz set up for his rig. He uses a Rickenbacker 620 exclusively live for this. (extremely under appreciated guitar)

I see so thats a like what Jonny's box...how much does a rig like that cost?

A rig like that is almost surely custom built and very expensive. A guy by the name of Mike Hill designed Jonny's rig.

Actually, there are a few companies who mass produce MIDI controlled pedal switching units such as these.

Voodoo Labs makes several different models based on amount of effects needed etc.

Also, I know Matt Bellamy from Muse uses a Rocktron All Access MIDI switcher, his is stock, and they retail for about $900-1000 U.S. (I've posted a link to their website)

very cool! thanks for the info!

Also, as regards Mike Hill (who builds Jonny's rigs), he's quite well regarded as something of a guitar rig wizzard. He's built rigs for Noel and Gem from Oasis among others. Any rig designed and built by him would definately cost a ton of money...

Pandora's Box just looks like a Ground Control Pro with a different front chassis. Musicians would do this mainly because the Ground Control's buttons are very unreliable and short circuit quite randomly.

The LCD screen, placement, and the ordering of the buttons seem to fit the characteristics of the ground control.

However his 2005 rig, shown in the photo seems to have two layers of buttons rather than three and have 12 potential program changes. The unit also seems to lack an LCD screen which the others do have. This is probably just a looper rather than a midiunit. I could be wrong though.

Jon's floor mounted switcher is not a ground control pro. It doesn't have the same number of bypass switches nor does it have an LCD screen.

He does have a GCP in hisrig but it is used by his tech to control his sounds when he's away from his board...

actually edge's pedal board is more basic than Jonny's exept the fact that is has about 1000 button's on it ;)
