Am I mad for not liking "Yellow"?

Featured Replies

This is something that has been on my mind since I first became a Coldplay fan. Many people I talk to see Yellow as the quintessential Coldplay song, possibly even their anthem. I can't get into it like everyone else, to me, it's just a formulaic, mediocre pop-rock track. Musically i'm not thrilled, lyrically I can't connect with it. Then there's beautiful, ambient and sonic tracks like Clocks which to me stand above Yellow. I just haven't warmed to it, in fact, Yellow is why I was so delayed in buying the Parachutes album, only to be surprised by the non-singles.

Have I gone mad? Where does everybody else place Yellow?

I think all of us has that big, popular Coldplay-song we don't consider to be among their best work. I love Yellow though, but a song like Trouble has never been a favorite at all for me.

Absolutely spot on!

I'm a little the same with Fix You and The Hardest Part, I never understood their success as singles. In fact, X&Y was a pretty strange album for its singles, I expected songs like Low, X&Y and White Shadows to be carrying the flag for that album. Speed of Sound was a terrific choice of first single though. Isn't it interesting how the band choose what you think are the least suspecting singles for radio? I mean that in general by the way, not just in Coldplay's case. REM have been a little like that with their previous 3 albums too, they never quite choose the singles that you expect them too.

It's not one of my personal favorites, but i think it's still a great song. It's funny reading what other people have posted though as i would always choose Trouble over Yellow! I think it could really do with being retired from the set list for a little while, so that people like myself could learn to appreciate it again. I've seen the band live 8 times now and it's been played on every single occasion!

I don't think you're mad, I kind of feel the same way about it as you do - although I DO think that it IS possibly the quintessential Coldplay song, it's just not for me :-) It's brilliant live though.

Yellow is my favourite song of all time by any artist of any genre bar-none, it's the reason i got into Coldplay 7 or 8 years ago and it holds a special meaning for me, but i do have a guilty non-liking for a really popular song... i don't consider Politik the masterpiece everyone says it is, there, i've said it =S

out of their supercommercial songs, yellow is the best

way better than clocks, scientist, speed of sound etc

I wish I liked yellow as much as every one else does

I am not that keen on Yellow, though I don't hate it, I certainly wouldn't miss it if they didn't play it again, which is very highly unlikely!!!

Hey you’re not mad… I feel exactly the same… almost everybody seems to love Yellow, but there’s just something about it … I know I will sound absolutely crazy… but the more people like something, the more I hate it… but you know, it’s just me…

You should seek out the Yellow recordings where it is just Chris and Piano...and he plays it slower...sounds so pretty.

Ok i must admit, the new acoustic version played at Brixton / BBC concert has got some of my passion back for this baby! :D

Nah, I don't particularly like Fix You. You're just as sane as I am.

Everyone has their own favorite, mine is Yelllow and One I Love , but i did not like the aucustic version they have been playing at the recent gigs. I need the balloons and crooning.

I just think that it has been so present throught out their career , they need to give it a rest or take it in a new direction , like the version from Brixton.

throughout ^ , boy is it early....

i think retirement, for a little while at least may be a good idea. I mean, it's not as though the boys are short for anthems is it?!

amsterdam and shiver are their bests

I like "Yellow", a popular CP song I don't really like much is "Clocks", it's alright, but not worthy of being one of their most famous hits...

While "God Put a Smile on Your Face" isn't of their big hits or anything, I will NEVER understand why they chose to use that as a single with songs like Daylight, AROBTTH, Green Eyes etc. on the album...GPASMOYF is probably my least favorite off that whole album, actually.

I can relate to that. You hear so much hype about something, you can't help it but only have high expectations, only to be disappointed upon listening. That situation is generally termed as "over-rating" ;)

Even though Yellow to me is a great song, I can understand why some people dont like it. With many Coldplay songs, the music itself isnt enough, people love them because of the personal connections. And with certain songs like Yellow, if you cant connect or relate to it, I can see why you wouldnt like it so much. It really connects to my life cuz thats how I feel about someone:rolleyes:, and I would love to be able to write a song that brilliant.
