Butterfly confetti- yes or no?

Featured Replies

It seems like an obvious answer to me, considering I absolutely loved the butterfly confetti during Lovers in Japan at last Friday's concert, but I've spoken to a few people who really disliked it.

What do you think? Was it the best part of the show? Was it a waste of paper? Was it too "Hannah Montana-esque", and not really "Coldplay-esque" [according to one article]? Opinions, opinions! :D

I think it looks great on the videos I've seen. And people had better stop complaining because I want butterfly confetti in December :)

Absolutely yes!

I've only seen it on the telly so far but it looks great, it's something a bit different and I hope to bag some as a souvenir when I see them in December

I'll try to post a video of Lovers & the confetti later, once it finishes uploading!

Yeah, my friend and I grabbed handfuls; it was ALL over the place! I taped all the little butterflies up in a heart shape on my bedroom wall, and stuck my ticket in the center of them. :D

People who were there complained about the confetti??!! :shocked2:

I must admit, I thought it looked a little bit cheesy at the MTV awards, but it's looked great in all other vids I've seen, is even better live, and is absolutely perfect for the sheer joy of LiJ.

Short of having fireworks (which usually don't work well in an indoor arena) it really couldn't get any better imo :)

Ah, that sounds lovely! My fridge is where I stick tickets from any really good gigs I've been too. I have a picture of Coldplay slap bang in the middle - it's a black and white shot and I've been all excited about the prospect of surrounding it with coloured butterflies!:smug:

I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with them.

Ah, well you learn something new everyday - apparently there is a phobia of butterflies, linked to Mottephobia (fear of moths)!! Perhaps the concert tickets should have a warning on them about the butterflies before someone sues!

I don't think the members of the following website would enjoy the gig much either!!

Actually, I find real butterflies a little bit creepy... but the paper ones look cute.

Is that a real website by the way?

Yes it is RedGirl - having a quick browse around they even have a forum with sections such as 'butterfly horror stories' with hundreds of posts and topics...

Some of the topics that caught my eye:

'thousands of butterflies all over me' (apparently they swarm like locusts :stunned:)

'used my 2 year-old son as a shield' :shocked2:

and 'bloodsucking butterfly, anyone know anything about it?'

...poor people, it's a really serious phobia

I'm sorry- but that IS a little bit funny. :laugh3:

^ I am sorry but that website is VERY funny, cant stop laughing, sorry.

I am glad I dont have that phobia.

On the subject of butterflies in the show,

well since my first experience with Coldplay live was the BBC tv show on tv(yes I know)

the confettis seemed to say- we are this very good band and are conquering the world musically - and we dont mind saying that we like people and we want to be easy to reach and natural forever - so we hope you dont mind it seeming a bit low tech just enjoy the colours flowing down on you and be in touch with the child inside you

- kind of thing. beautiful.

I'm sorry- but that IS a little bit funny. :laugh3:

It is NOT a little bit funny...I have a couple of small phobias myself and we all understand how crippling they can be if serious, but the way that's written...

it's hilarious :laugh3:

Best of all was one of the responses, something like 'you guys are lucky to have kids for that purpose, I have to use strangers'!! Hehe.

- kind of thing.

Such a great band, no attitude and we are here for you approach.

I have never seen anything like it before in all those decades.

A lovely thought Lauve - just right! That's how it felt to me to be under the confetti. Just like being a kid again under a sea of bubbles, or at some amazing theater production. Actually it reminds me of an event I used to go to in London. You could bring your own drinks as it wasn't licensed (:D) and people brought kids (it was a really family-friendly vibe), and ran around and danced everywhere. The light show was fantastic, and the ceiling was covered in old parachutes, which just looked beautiful with the lasers and the lights bouncing off them.

One of the highlights of the evening was towards the end when out of the parachutes on the ceiling poured hundreds of huge balloons down of everyone dancing below. (This was years and years before Coldplay did that, and it's a fair guess someone who works for them went to this same event all those years ago - it was pretty famous in London for many years).

And then the final highlight! One of the white parachute skins was stretched across the dancefloor, and everyone underneath it sat down, exhausted and hot from a night of dancing. All those around the edge held it, and waved it up and down, in time with the ambient music that was playing, so the air swirled around in a cooling breeze underneath, and the ripples swept across and distorted the lights and lazers to those looking up from below, as those same giant balloons continued to bounce around on top...heavenly :angel::dance:

Back on topic - ignore me everyone! - but if parachutes appear at the next Coldplay gig you heard it here first!!

I love the confetti especially becuase its shaped like a butterfly whichc my name means

butterfly...lol :D. I was telling my brother that Coldplay was calling out for me lol... but I think

the fans love it! In a away it is a waste of paper but I would think they pick them up and

reuse the confetti for the other show.... but I love it! :D

I love your story,

reminds me of some parties - simple ideas, great effect - but we never used the parachute as fan for everyone. What a great one.

good times. good to remember.

I loved the confetti at the two shows I went to... but I think that it was amazing because both were very small gigs, I was near the front and everybody was covered in the confetti, hence involving the entire crowd. It was a great ending to the shows with LIJ accompanied by the butterflies...just kind of joyous. I loved the u.v butterflies at Brixton too :nice:

Not sure how it will work at bigger shows. I dunno how people think it's been at the American gigs so far.. wonder whether in December I will be able to catch any

i would say no..........i didnt go to a concert but just the idea seems so like hannah montana-ish.............well thats just my opinion

I'll be honest, I don't know anything about Hannah Montana (apart from the "controversial" vanity fair shoot)

What's the deal? Is she a big butterfly fan or something?

I agreed totally...till I saw it in the flesh. And everyone loved it, was going crazy :)

Kara's got a great point, though, about only the people at the front being able to make the most of it (and unfortunately at the UK gigs it's all seating, and those people will be mostly ones who are prepared to pay hundreds and hundreds of pounds on ebay :()

But as a spectacle, like I said I think it's the best thing they could have apart from fireworks if they were outside. It really works :)

Actually, I was fairly far back and got at least 100 pieces... most of it came blowing from the back and into the front, actually. :D

I like Lauve's statement about enjoying the colours and getting in touch with your inner child - I think that's a very Chris Martin state-of-mind.

As for how they'll work in a big arena - I'm in the 18th row, so I'll let you know! I hope some of them reach me, but then I won't see it so well. The people at the back will get the best view, the people at the front will get the best feeling.

Exactly. There's something so goofy and childish yet beautiful about it, which is exactly what I think of when I think of Chris. A lot of the reviews called it "immature", even, but that's kind of what Chris is, in a way. :smug:

Wonderful news, thank you strawberryfields - I don't want to miss my confetti at the O2!!

The 18th row isn't an arena experience confetti-wise - it'll be like being at the back of a packed pub concert (distance wise) - it'll be absolutely sure to be flying all over your head there!!

Yea, it's so nice they're comfortable enough to have stripped things back all the way to childhood in some ways :). Strawberry Swing is probably the pinnacle of that, but 42 goes a long way close - evoking the joy of unwrapping your most-wanted gift at Christmas for me! CSC's like the wonder of a newly-nascent child in one of its very early naps - confused, dazed, incoherent, yet 'satisfied' - and even DAAHF has that very basic, elemental energy - the astonishing joy of the completely unexpected energy...

sorry, what was the topic? Ah yes, the confetti! It's great!! :D
