How many siblings do you have?

Reading a couple of other threads tonight got me thinking about family...

How many brothers & sisters do you have?

Do you get on with them?

Have they influenced the person you've become?

I'm an only child, and I think that's why I'm such an independant person. I love my friends and family, but I'm also very comfortable when I'm on my own.

How about you?

1 Brother, zero sisters, who is older than me by 2 and a bit years

Do you get on with them?

Sometimes :P

Not really, he's an ambulance man, where I'm accountant, he is public sector, I'm private sector

I have one sister, and we've always gotten along pretty well (with the exception of petty sibling bickering kind of stuff when we were younger). She's 4 years younger than me, but we have enough in common in spite of that. I guess she's influenced they way I am now, just because I really can't imagine how it would be to be an only child.

i have one brother, three years younger. for the vast majority of those 15 years, we hated each other, but in the last two its been better, and i actually enjoy his company more often than not. he's absolutely hilarious, though vulgar.

however, i was essentially brought up more communally, since i went to a small school that ate up all my time and my entire life between the ages of four and eighteen. it feels like i have (or had) 38 brothers and sisters, and i spent more time at my school than with my parents and brother. not that that really counts, but it might explain why i have grown to be almost excessively independent: because i so had to value my alone time growing up.

i've got one sister. she's 8 years older than me.

i'd like to think we get on very well, but actually i'd say... no. we get along as in "we don't spend the entire day fighting", but still i don't feel like we have a special connection. we're not alike. in fact, if she wasn't my sister i don't think we'd have ever become friends. we're too different.

she may have influenced me a bit. as i already said we don't have a lot in common, but that maybe developed because she's always been quite mean to me when we were younger. she always neglected me and that's probably why we developed into two different directions.

Yeah, I think I know what you mean since going away to college. I've lived with pretty much the same group of girls for the last 3 years, and I have to say they feel more like sisters than friends at this point. We just spend so much time together since we live with each other and then hang out with each other in our free time, so it definitely feels like a family. :)

It's always a little bit weird when I go home to my real family for vacations and stuff... I'm not used to living with them anymore!

I realise that being an only child has had it's advantages - my folks gave me all of their love and attention and financially they were better off so whilst I wasn't spoiled, I never went without.

But sometimes I feel like I missed out. It might have been nice to have an older brother or sister to lean on and learn from...

And sometimes I wish there was someone else my Mum could focus her attention on. She gets a bit intense sometimes and it's me that has to deal with it!

I cannot imagine what it's like to be one of five. Wow!

My parents made a conscious decision just to have one child. My Mum was an only child and loved it, so she didn't see the need to have more than one. My Dad was one of seven and is childhood was really tough so he thought having just one would be better.

I'm an only child and sometimes I wish I had an older brother or sister ... I get too much attention ...

I hear that!

On the wall in my parents house they have seven or eight photos of me through the ages... every time I walk past them I feel pressure. It's like, I'm the sole focus of their attention, so if I screw up, I'll break their hearts.

Sometimes I think it would be so much easier if there was someone else to share it all with

I would have loved a big brother or sister.

Me too. I never wanted a younger sibling, but there have been a lot of times when I wished there was an older brother or sister around.

And ultimately, I'd have prefered a brother. Of all my friends, the ones who had a sibling of the opposite sex seem to have the best relationship.

I had a hugely protective dad so I don't know if I would have been able to handle a big brother too as a lot of my friends that have an older brother they seem to be quite protective.
