*cough* INTERNET GEEK:

jD is an artist, and a geek. Independently of the Ren Faire, he had decided to craft a leather stamp that consisted of the @ symbol as a trescalion. After much preparation the stamp was finally finished after the Northern Renaissance Pleasure Faire began in Fall 1994.

Word got out about jD's wondrous leather stamp, and those who had heard of it gathered around to marvel at its simplicity and subtlety. The stamp turned out to be so popular, that jD decided to craft a "geek favour" out of it. Any person working the Ren Faire who would give jD his/her email address (keep in mind that in 1994 Faire participants with email were in a minority) could get a favour, which was a small round of uncured leather stamped with the trescalion.

And then, jD found out that the Queen had an account with Internet access.

the pictures.

By this time the Ren Faire had been going several weeks and word of the "geek favour" had spread far and wide. Participants with email actively looked for the favour on others; it's not an easy thing, asking a stranger for his or her email address in Elizabethan English!

Pumpernickel Pie:

Ingredients:

1 ¼ pound pie pumpkin*

1 Cup pumpernickel bread crumbs

1/3 Cup dark brown sugar

½ Cup heavy cream

1 Whole Egg

2 Additional tablespoons brown sugar

Method:

Prepare the pie pumpkin as you would a jack-o-lantern pumpkin by taking off the top and scooping out the seeds.

Mix together the bread crumbs and 1/3 cup brown sugar and spoon into pumpkins.

Blend together the remaining ingredients and pour into pumpkin letting the liquid soak into the crumb mixture.

Put the top back on the pumpkin. Place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees in a preheated oven for about one hour. Allow to cool at least 30 minutes before taking off the top and cutting into wedges. This can serve 4-8 people depending on your appetites. Present each plated wedge with a spoonful of vanilla sauce** and a sprinkling of toasted pecans on top.

While the stuffed pumpkin is baking, you could clean the seeds by removing most of the stringy stuff and then spreading them out in one layer on a sprayed sheetpan and toasting them in the oven alongside or below the pumpkin. Bake until crispy and brown, maybe 30 minutes. You could use the pumpkin seeds for garnish instead of the pecans.

*You may substitute 2 or 3 appropriately-sized acorn squash if pie pumpkins are not available today. You might consider placing the squash in a small bowl on the baking sheet so it will stand up straight.

**Make it easy on yourself-use a small box of vanilla pudding mix and just add a little more milk to make it of sauce consisteny.

Walton & Apathy, Google page 7:

Walton leads UA with 16 points, 4 assists

At this point in the season, Arizona will take a win any way they can get it.

If the slash in the win column comes after two starters are held without a field goal while the bench players dictate the tempo, so be it.

The Wildcats defeated Oregon State 65-54 last night behind the performance of the least likely of players.

"The bench got in and really started playing well, which was really encouraging," said UA sophomore forward Luke Walton, who came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points. "Down at this point of the season, if Coach O can have faith in us, we are going to be a more forceful team. We came in tonight and didn't let any of the momentum down, and as the second five - that's our main responsibility."

UA head coach Lute Olson said he was impressed with how Walton and senior forwards Justin Wessel and Gene Edgerson managed their court time.

Wessel and Edgerson, playing in their second-to-last game in McKale Center, combined for 11 points and seven rebounds.

More importantly to their coach, though, was that the five players off the bench committed only two of Arizona's 13 turnovers.

"The second five did a great job and came out with a lot of enthusiasm and really took care of the basketball," he said. "I thought the reserves came in and did a really good job defensively and were more patient offensively (than the starters)."

Though the UA coaches and players expected the Beavers to operate at a sluggish tempo, they were still bothered by their inability to establish an offensive rhythm.

Plagued with injuries, Oregon State arrived in Tucson with eight players in uniform. To make up for that, they forced UA to play at a slower pace, bringing the Wildcats out of their normal run-and-gun style.

"Oregon State plays the way they have to play given their situation," Olson said. "They are going to try to hang on to it as long as they can. I thought we stayed patient on defense, but did a miserable job with some opportunities offensively. There were poor decisions with the ball, trying to make difficult plays instead of just moving the ball and letting it happen."

Edgerson said that even though Arizona was playing the eighth-place team in the Pacific 10 Conference, he is concerned with tonight's apathy carrying into the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament where UA may face more teams that slow the tempo.

"Sure, we played a team that was not as good as us, but we cannot afford to play down to our competition," he said.

While starters Gilbert Arenas and Michael Wright scored 10 and 13 points respectively, both sophomore guard Jason Gardner and senior center Loren Woods were 0 for 4 from the field.

"I suck," said Woods, who pantomimed putting a gun to his head following one of his misses. "Anytime you go 0 for 4 against a team like Oregon State (is disappointing). Neither of their big guys are their best players. I didn't have a big game and am not ever expecting to have a big game in a uniform."

Woods, who was projected to be a top pick in the NBA draft after last season but chose to stay at UA, said that he wishes he could make that decision all over again.

"As far as playing, if I would have known I would have had a season like this, there would have been no question (that I would have come out)," he said. "Once the season is over, I probably will have to go back to the drawing board, working on short shots and post moves.

"I am just going to ride the backs of these guys, hopefully all the way to the Final Four."

After an All-Pac-10 and All-American season a year ago, Woods has seen his scoring and rebounding numbers plummet.

At one point in the second half, Woods signaled to be taken out of the game, which likely prompted Olson to question the 7-foot-1 senior's desire after the game.

"He is 22 or 23 years old, and if he gets down on himself, then he gets down on himself," Olson said. "His teammates and the staff have been trying to buck him up, but if he doesn't want to, he doesn't want to. It is obvious that it is not going to change now."

ABANDONING YOU:

Here's what I got out of this discussion so far. Did I miss

anything? I've tried to separate my own opinions from the summary.

Why people abandon practices.

1. Lack of committment to XP ( by either the team or management )

2. Lack of Discipline, Courage, etc.

3. Pressure ( of schedule, from management )

4. Practices aren't working (or seem not to be working)

1. There doesn't seem to be much suggestion of what to do in this

case.

Falling monkey turds

Monkey Butt and the flying cantaloupe from mars had a little incident yesterday. It seems that the donut sniffing poodle caught up with us as we daringly raced fiendishly around the neighborhood. Ya, right that's not exactly what happened but it may be closer to the truth. :o

Hidden Messages: Any There There?

By Farhad Manjoo  |   Also by this reporter Page 1 of 2 next »

STANFORD, California -- Niels Provos, a computer science graduate student at the University of Michigan, took the dais at a Stanford University lecture hall Wednesday evening with what seemed a comforting message: After analyzing a couple million graphics files posted on the Internet, he has found no evidence that any of the pictures contained hidden communications sent by anyone, let alone agents of Osama bin Laden.

But as Provos went on to describe the ins and outs of detecting steganography -- the practice of hiding secret messages in graphic and sound files posted on the Internet -- it became clear that the comfort was illusory. If someone hides a message well enough, detecting it amid the swirl of other Internet traffic is a maddeningly slow and difficult process -- and it might even be impossible.
