RedGirl76
Hi everyone, This is a longshot, but I'm looking for some inspiration. I am a High School teacher and on Friday, we are burying a Time Capsule to celebrate our schools 50th anniversary. I need to find a poem to be read out while the capsule is being lowered in to the ground... and I know nothing about poetry. It could be on the theme of past memories or looking to the future, something positive that will inspire... Any ideas? If you can't think of an actual poem, could you perhaps narrow the field by naming a poet? Thank you for taking the time to read this, even if you can't help :)

SwallowedInSea
One of my favorite poets is Billy Collins- here's a website with a bunch of his stuff: http://www.poemhunter.com/billy-collins/ His poems are usually pretty lighthearted, and he has things that are funny or thoughtful or whatever, depending on what kind of mood you're going for. Hope you can find something!! :)
RedGirl76
 umm.. thank you? btw Alison.. should it be long, short, rhyme-ish? I'm not looking for anything epic! Short is fine, rhyming would be easier for the kids who will be reading it, but I'm open to any suggestions :)

RedGirl76
I do try and share my love of Coldplay with the pupils - but it's not cool to like the same things as your teacher. But when I played them Strawberry Swing and didn't tell them who it was, they fell in love with it!
Aleluvscp
 On The Beach At Night Alone On the beach at night alone, As the old mother sways her to and fro singing her husky song, As I watch the bright stars shining, I think a thought of the clef of the universes and of the future. A vast similitude interlocks all, All spheres, grown, ungrown, small, large, suns, moons, planets, All distances of place however wide, All distances of time, all inanimate forms, All souls, all living bodies though they be ever so different, or in different worlds, All gaseous, watery, vegetable, mineral processes, the fishes, the brutes, All nations, colors, barbarisms, civilizations, languages, All identities that have existed or may exist on this globe, or any globe, All lives and deaths, all of the past, present, future, This vast similitude spans them, and always has spann'd, And shall forever span them and compactly hold and enclose them. -Walt Whitman I'm not good at this

Aleluvscp
i love walt whitman.... :) i actually live in the same town as he grew up in! that's pretty amazing. is there anything there in his remembrance? k here's another one.. Future is not a linear Extrapolation of the present; Unfamiliar terrains lie ahead To traverse which a new kind of vehicle We may have to invent. New driving skills we may have to possess And a new sense of direction as well, For the road that stretches out before us May lead us anytime into hell. Future is not a fixed goal Like a perceived destination, For the road to future May itself change directions And lead us to a place Unfound in our imagination. Future is not something predictable Like the snowfall occurring in winter; It is a series of technological innovations Which may benefit mankind, Or result in unexpected disaster. So let us not look at the future With a preconceived notion, But equip ourselves with a new vehicle And a new kind of fuel To reach the ever-changing destination. Aleluvscp
Your journey starts here it starts now Your future is in your hands and know one shows you how To make it, unfold, and have it turn out what you want it to be Not anybody, not me Talk it a step at a time Even if your plans are stopped on a dime Be careful, and listen, learn from your mistakes Because one day you'll advance on the choices you make Your future is here, your future is now But don't worry, you'll show yourself how
Aleluvscp
Future Thoughts The future lies ahead just another day Exciting if you can see the light. Future Thoughts open up your eyes, Except our faults for our Mistakes and sorrows All is known what happened yesterday, Could be changed, by what we do today All could be forgiven; we have that right, The future of tomorrow is just a day away, For all to share in every way. , For the most wonderful thing to remember There is always hope for a new tomorrow. -Charles Garcia

SwallowedInSea
that's pretty amazing. is there anything there in his remembrance? Oh yeah... the house where he was born is now a museum. Also tons of places around town- my high school, the mall, roads, a park and stuff are all named after him. Whenever I read Leaves of Grass I totally picture this park in my town that's right around the area where he lived. :)

Space Cadet
Have you tried Yeats? I'm not sure if he's written anything futuristic, but some of his stuff has a habit of seeming very profound.
Space Cadet
When You Are Old by William Butler Yeats (W. B. Yeats) When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. Hmm... probably not quite what you were looking for, but interesting.
