Acoustic Guitar Strings

Featured Replies

I need a set of strings for an old acoustic guitar. One of them has snapped so I might as well just re-string the whole lot. The cheaper the better, without compromising on quality of course.

Nylon or steel-stringed?

On my "livingroom" steel-string guitar i use "Elixir phosphor bronze nanoweb .12-.53". They stay well sounding a LONG time.

I'm after steel strings. I'll check those ones out thanks.

My freaking god what in name of hell does that mean, they sound very expensive hahaha back here in my little town I can only find some crappy strings called "Cometa" and THAT'S ALL YOU CAN FIND.

A question!! Am I supposed to change my guitar strings every certain period of time??? or just leave them as long as they last??? My fingers hyrt after playing a little time and they get ugly is that beacause the strings are no longer good or is it just me??? they're steel strings... guess that was more than one question haha

I change the strings on my gibson hummingbird about every third week if i play alot. If not i can keep them longer. The same goes for my fender usa telecaster. On those two guitars i use standard strings(GHS and Ernie Ball) But on my yamaha and ibanez acoustic i use coated Elixir strings(cost a bit more, but not that much). They sound a little bit different, but last a very long time. I usually don't change them more often than every 4-6 months, even if they get played several hours every day.

To answer your last question: Your fingers hurting might be an indication that your guitar has too high action, or that you haven't played steel-string guitar that long. Mine hurt too in the beginning, but now they have a hard tip that makes it real easy to play.

It sure is important to change strings. I just accidently broke my g string and bought a new one, wow. The whole guitar got a new sound at it's just amazing. I don't my strings have been changed for over 1 year or so, except for my g string that is. If I bchange all the other strings on guitar it'd probably sound really good.

Is it better to start off with nylon and then change to steel once you're more used to the different chord shapes, or is best to start with steel from the start?

I don't see the point of starting with nylon if you plan to play steel-string later on. The neck is wider(making it very hard to play coldplay songs) and it has a whole other sound. You will never get to sound like your idols and their acoustic guitar. I started off with steel strings, and i'm so happy i did. I probably would have gotten bored with the dull sound.

And remember, you can't put steel strings on a nylon-string guitar. It will pull the neck so much that it will get virtually unplayable, plus it sounds bad.

I started with steel strings (happy I chose this guitar with thin neck cause I just picked for the graeat look I didn't know about these things haha) and I've been playing for almost 2 years.

I've never changed the 2nd, 5th and 6th string, so I wonder if it's time to.

In this time, I don't feel like my fingers get so used to playing, I got a hard tip on my fingers too but I don't think it's so useful cause I can just play like an hour and 15 minutes MAXIMUM straight and then maybe I can play a little at night if I played in the morning, otherwise I can't play until the next day cause my fingers really hurt. On this past vacation my guitar stayed at my grandpa's house for about 2 weeks and when I got it back I could barely play, so I realized my fingers were really a little used to playing but not that much, I've seen other guys play more than me straight without complaining
