coldspot
Hey, this is my first thread so I hope I don't stuff it up. I have an electric guitar but no amplifier so I've been bashing it (kinda hard, i guess) to get some sound. The strings have started to get a high pitched rattle when I strum them now and I think I've discovered  why a friend told me not to play it so hard. Is this a major problem? Can/does it need fixing?

bearcat1229
In all reality you probably need to tune the thing, and some lessons, please.

Marky
Change strings first to see if that sorts it. Does it only ring when you play open strings?
bearcat1229
haha, sorry I was only commenting on the "banging hard on strings" comment. Just seems to me like thats what I did aimlessly when I first got an electric because I really had no idea how to play it. I really don't know your ability level at this point so I assure you no offense intended, just gave me a little chuckle remembering the beginning... bearcat1229
To add to that your strings are probably stretching as you "bash" on them. Re-tuning it will give them proper tightness and eliminate that, or you just need new strings, either are low cost solutions.
coldspot
I find it tends to be the G and D strings. They are new, tuned and now re-tuned. been playing for over two years. Being a girl it probably reckons it can mess me round:laugh3:

sp★rkle
Strings are loose (due to the bashing) and probably old. That's just it. So buy new ones. And yeah, get an amplifier. Lastly, love your guitar. Even so, name it. It will do you a great deed eventually. DON'T BASH IT.

Now it's rattling all strings with capo 1st fret. Now what? You're welcome. Haha... Sing Fix You :P But... I think you still haven't fixed it. Questions: 1. Is it just rattling when you put the capo on the 1st fret or even without the capo? 2. Have you bought an amplifier yet? 3. Did you tune it right? 4. Does your guitar come with lock strings (the option that when you're done tuning it, you can lock it so that it won't mess up your performance)? It stopped rattling when I tuned it (no capo) but it rattles really bad with capo on 1st fret. Next to no rattle with capo on higher frets. I tuned it correctly to standard tuning and it still rattlesYes! I bought an amp. But I'm a little lazy when it comes to clearing space and plugging it in. There are no lock strings either. Any clues?

It might be that the capo is loose when placed in the 1st fret that's why it rattles when you put it there... or it doesn't lock the strings in place that well when you put the capo. maybe you are using a capo that doesn't match your guitar... or you just have to do some adjustments or proper capo placement. :D
coldspot
i've adjusted the capo heaps but no improvement. I use the same capo on several different guitars and don't have this problem. maybe the thinner strings rattle because of the ridges in the capo rubber from thicker strings? i don't know I'll fiddle around with what you said and post back in a little while if nothing works. Thanks for the help:cool:
