Obama or McCain, who will you (would you) vote for?

Featured Replies

I am voting for John McCain. I liked Ron Paul the best of all of the candidates and was disappointed he didn't make it further. Talk about change... they called him crazy because his ideas were truly different. Plus he didn't waste his time bashing other people... he just spoke his own ideas. I would like to see less bashing and more good ideas from both sides.

We are neighbors, we teach each other's children, sell each other clothes, build each other's houses. I hope in a few weeks people will put down their political signs and make real change at the ground level. Presidents are not saviors and can't help those who won't help themselves. We need to make the real difference, buy locally, support each other, make better health decisions, think through our actions more, cut back pollution and treat each other with kindness.

I know I sound like a loony hippie, but I very much believe those things and I try to do them every day... whether by turning my car off instead of letting it idle, not running water if I'm not using it or just by carpooling, etc. I would encourage everyone here to do those things, to look at your neighbor and to try to start improving.

I truly love our country but I see it falling apart because of the labels we've given ourselves, the signs we wave and pins we wear. The political party thing has become such a hurting point... people point fingers and judge others by a sign. And what does it all really mean anyway? We need to first heal our families, friends and communities before we can heal our nation and our world. It starts with you, not the man who calls himself president.

Please find kindness in your heart for someone on the other side of the political "fence." Look at them with compassion. Remember that if you were hurt, they might be the hands that cradle your head and lovingly stitch you up, save your life.

Christ's real message to the world was that we are supposed to love others before ourselves. I think that gets lost so many times behind religion and tradition. tonight I'm praying for all of us here and for each of you, for myself and this world. Please join me?

I am a moral, selfless person, I don't pray and I don't believe in God, yet I am (according to your religion) going to burn for an eternity in the pits of hell for not believing in an illogical being with no proof, is that fair?

I realise that is VERY off topic, so PM me your answer or something if you want to

easy soldier, hell is seldom mentioned in the Bible and the concept of burning for an eternity in hell is a modernized depiction based on ideas of purgatory throughout the middle ages. So called hell is up to various biblical interpretations and they're split among denominations. and since Kackie didn't accuse you of anything personally, I don't think there's any need be so quick to go on offense.

I was asking a question, was hardly attacking her. Yes I did think twice about putting "burning" because I realise that's not exactly what it's all about, but there you go.

I just really hate prayers and the idea that people think praying actually achieves anything.

Sorry for the late reply, I went to a strange place called "outside" for a short period

Yes I understand the system, I can't re-iterate enough that I know what you are talking about and how I would love to see it put into practice, I can't really put into words what I mean exactly, but forgive me because it is late here.

How do you think you could start off an anarchist state now? It would take a lot of work to get people to part with the idea of a government without getting people who would abuse the system.

People would probably listen to what you were saying more attentively if you didn't patronise them. Some branches of Anarchism advocate violent revolutions, I assume you aren't one of those types and I agree that's the wrong way to go about things.

Outside? God how I miss it... one of these days I'll get one of those tiny laptops and author my posts from outdoor French cafes.

And you're right, I should have made it more clear I'm not a violent anarchist. I get my ideas about anarchy from Murray Rothbard (he's an Austrian economist).

I think the transition to anarchy will be violent, however. But it's absolutely justified. Governments throughout history typically grow until they overtake society and destroy it, then they're quickly replaced by another government (because the taxation apparatus still exists and the citizens had their guns taken from them by the previous government). This is helped along more quickly by the fact they print fiat money, which inevitably becomes worthless after a few really expensive wars.

I honestly do believe this was the wisdom of the second amendment in the American constitution. Jefferson had in mind that there would be a revolution every so often, to keep government small. Unfortunately even that seems a tad idealistic today, because I'm sure Jefferson would have balked at the size and scope of American power today.

I'm encouraging for us to work together instead of apart. I've felt very sad to see families split down the middle over this debate... tonight my friend said she and her husband got in a fight about it. It feels like in the Civil War when families literally were seperated by loyalties to the north or south... yes, they believed strongly in things, but I can't imagine being a mother and seeing your son on the other side of a battlefield from your husband or even from yourself.

Thank you Tnspieler, for what you said, because you're absolutely right... I wasn't speaking to anyone in particular! :D

HorrificAttack, I'm sharing my opinion like everyone else is, which is what makes this such a colorful place. We're all sharing our opinions. I didn't attack you and don't want to attack you. You have every right to believe what you do. I'm not taking away from your beliefs, so please don't take away from mine.

I do believe people will understand what I was trying to say and I hope you will too.

I didn't attack you, since when is asking a question about someone's beliefs attacking them?

By that merit I am attacking Saffire, when in fact I am intrigued by what he has to say.

I know, it was almost scary at first, there are so many people! And the air, it's fresh :O

How did you get into anarchy? Was there a particular book you read? I'm assuming by Murray Rothbard? I'd be very interested in looking it up if that was the case.

Don't worry, horrificattack! No one accused you of attacking me :D I don't think you were attacking me!

Maybe it's just a recurring theme from your screenname lol. It does sound kind of funny! Where did the idea for it come from, if I may ask?

It's an inside joke between me and Jack, it is Coldplay related though, that's why it is my username here

Originally I was a conservative Republican (a neo-con). But then I gave it some serious thought and realized what a disaster Bush has been. So I became a libertarian, and I have been that for a few years now. But it was only in the last few months that I became aware of Austrian economics... when Ron Paul was freaking out in the Republican primaries about a "gold standard" I thought that sounded like the silliest thing ever. But then I researched it and realized it actually makes quite a lot of sense... then I found out about Murray Rothbard and I started listening to Stefan Molyneux podcasts.

You can listen to his first podcast on the right side of his page. But set aside some time for it, because it's pretty lengthy. Kind of like my own rambling on here ;)

^^I liked Ron Paul too. He was interviewed recently on TV and he really seemed to have his head on right... of course, it would be a lot of changing very quickly and it might be hard to adjust for a lot of people. I think that's why he was written off as "crazy" but he seems like a really, really cool guy... and very goodnatured on top of all of that.

Many people here seem to have differing opinions based on this election. Just curious, either way, is anybody dreading 1.20.09 (Bush's last day)? I mean, does anyone here still think Bush has done a good job?

WOOOO Obama wins Dixville Notch 15-6, and Hart's Location 17-10-2

Bush's last couple years really haven't been too bad. But the world has become so sick of him that, even if it's a change for worse, most people will be giddy with glee to see him leave.

Okay, and I just have to ask one thing HorrificAttack, and I'm going to completely sound like an idiot American here and everything but... do you guys consider Sting to be sort of a son of your area? Or Mark Knopfler? They are two of my favorite musicians and they're both from that area of England, if i remember right...

You grow your artists good up there ;)

Yeah, but in my opinion, anyone will be better than Bush. While I don't want McCain, he'd still be a small step up in my opinion. It's Palin I'm really scared of, but I guess it's better to have an idiot Vice President than an evil genius who completely controls the president (Cheney).

^^Yeah, and now I'm laughing remembering Will Ferrell saying, "Huh? That's not what Dick Cheney said the day he sat me down!" LOL!! That was one of the best moments on there in my opinion. hehe

Where was that from?

Hahaha

Sting is a bit of a penis. Got nothing against the Dire Straits though

Nobody really brags about either of them being from here though.

Isn't Sting's wife insane?

I heard she beats up their servants or something.

Yeah, Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler are awesome! Sorry for asking a dumbish question about it, because I'm sure you live in a huge place, but people always imagine another city/state as a lot smaller than it is. (Like on Flight of the Conchords!)

2732, it was on SNL... um... two weeks ago I think? It was Will Ferrell as President Bush, talking to Tina Fey about why the vide president is the most important person in the country or something lol. Very funny.

I remember that skit. The political parody's are about the only remotely funny things SNL churns out nowadays. I think it was the one where Bush tries to give McCain his personal endorsement, but McCain keeps trying to run away.

I agree. SNL is hopeless without McCain/Palin:rolleyes:
