Chapter 3

It's a long one!

I walked out of the elevator in the hotel and froze in terror. Someone was sitting outside my room. Cautiously, I moved up and realized it was Jonny. I let out the breath I’d been holding and rubbed my chest tentatively. My heart was beating so fast I thought I might pass out. Swallowing convulsively, I reached out and touched him on the shoulder. “Jon?”

He jerked awake, making me jump back in fright. He looked up at me blearily, moving his legs back to try and stand. I took a step away, wondering why the hell he’d stayed. Why would he do that? My heart beat fiercely as he yawned and grinned at me. “You seemed a bit off, so I decided to wait.” He paused. “Where are the cigarettes? What time is it?” he asked, his grin fading quickly.

I swallowed again and looked down at myself. I had no idea what to say. Jonny was the most perceptive person I knew; he could tell something was wrong. He knew I’d lied…but how would he react if I told him the truth? I stared back at him for a moment, shifting on my feet. “I didn’t go to get cigarettes.” His accusing look faltered, probably due to the utter helplessness and shame in my voice. Even I could hear it.

“Where did you go, then?” he asked, still frowning. God, the look in his eyes was so innocently worried. It seemed to make the pain worse.

“Come in, Jon. Please.” I suggested, unlocking the door and holding it open.

“So…I see you’ve cleaned up a bit.” muttered Jonny, looking around at the immaculate area. “Where’d the girl go?”

I froze and felt my heart skip a beat. “There was no girl.”

“Yeah. Yeah, sure.” he laughed. “So, what’s up?” There was nothing but concern in his voice. I didn’t answer him. Instead, I began rummaging through my duffel bag. I pulled out my laptop, my hands shaking so much I could barely hold it. “Guy?”

“Here…you can sit.” I offered, gesturing to the bed. He took a hesitant seat, and then I realized I had just told him to sit down on the same bed it had happened in. Well, he would know soon enough. I opened the laptop carefully and turned it on, putting it down in front of Jonny. “Guy, what…?”

“Here.” I opened and pointed to the file. Jonny looked up at me, obviously nervous.

“Man, you look really pale…”

“It’s easier if you just watch it…please.” I whispered, feeling my throat tighten. I didn’t want him to see this, yet at the same time, I needed him to. I needed someone to know.

“Are you okay?” he asked, completely ignoring me.

“Jon.” I said, my voice low. “Please.” Finally, he looked down at the laptop, unmoving. Then he cautiously opened the file.

At first, as with me, he didn’t seem to react. He stared ahead at the screen, its light illuminating his face. A minute in, his breaths became shallow. He pressed a shaking hand over his mouth, and his eyes were wide as saucers. Three minutes in, tears were running down his face, but he couldn’t seem to move. He was barely breathing anymore; the look on his face was pure horror. Finally, with a trembling hand, he slammed the laptop lid shut. He looked up at me, his face frozen. “N-no. Guy…no.”

I nodded, wrapping my arms around myself. I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t want him to be upset. He let out a shuddering breath and looked down at the bed. Then he stood slowly and backed away a few steps. “Oh god…oh my god.”

“Jonny…” I whispered.

“Please tell me that wasn’t real.” he ground out, his voice breaking. His reaction wasn’t making feel any better. In fact, I felt horrible. I should have never made him watch the video. What was I trying to do? Make someone else feel my pain? I buried my head in my hands, my shoulders hunched in self-loathing.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that…” I muttered.

“Oh my god…” he whispered, his voice disappearing. “Guy…”

“You’re doing better than I did.” I joked weakly. “I got sick a few times when I saw it.” Obviously I wasn’t skilled in the art of informing a close friend about an incident like this.

“Where were you?” he asked, realization dawning on him. “When you…went out?”

I looked up at him gradually. “The hospital.” Jonny looked as if I’d punched him in the stomach as he sank into the same chair he’d occupied earlier. The pain in his eyes probably rivaled mine.

“Are you…okay?” He was struggling desperately to hold himself together.

“They, um…told me to go back tomorrow for the, uh…results of the blood test. Everything else…is okay.” I touched my head, trying to quell the dizziness that had settled into it. Jonny was silent. He let his head fall into his palms, running his hands forcefully through his hair.

“This isn’t happening.” he whispered.

“Jonny?” He didn’t seem to be listening.

“Earlier today...I d-didn’t believe you…I blamed you for d-drinking too much…”

“Jon…”

“But…you didn’t. He d-drugged you? It wasn’t…your fault.” His words were broken and soft, but convinced. I shivered and looked up at him, shocked. No one had told me that yet, and I wasn’t sure if I believed him or not. He stared back at me, his eyes still overflowing with tears. “Tell me y-you know that.”

“I…I….” I didn’t quite believe him. “I shouldn’t have showed you that…I don’t know what I was thinking.” I stood up a bit too quickly, which caused a small but unexpected burst of pain. I gasped, using the wall to catch myself before I ended up on the floor. Jonny was up in the blink of an eye, at my side in a fraction of a second. He automatically reached out to offer his help, but the trauma was still too fresh. I stiffened in fear and shoved him away, breathing shallowly. Jonny stumbled back; and my eyes widened in horrified realization.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.” He took another step back, looking close to being sick. “I saw him leave.” he said suddenly. I looked away, knowing instantly who he was talking about. “He walked right by me last night. He grinned at me.” Jonny’s words were filled with quiet hatred, the likes of which I’d never heard from him before.

“I didn’t want to tell you, Jon. I really…didn’t want to.”

He stayed silent, running a hand across his jaw. He turned away from me, walking the short distance back to my bed. He stared down at my laptop as if it were a bomb about to go off. “Police?”

I repressed an exhausted sigh. I had already considered that at the hospital. “I don’t want to.” I said, pulling my sleeves down past my wrists. “I can’t. What it would do to us…”

“Don’t think about the band.” said Jonny quietly. “This is about you.”

“Jonny…” I whispered, a humorless smile playing on my lips. “The band is all I’ve got.”

Jonny looked like he desperately wanted to disagree with me, but he seemed to decide against it, because he let the subject be swept under the rug. But I wanted a response for my first statement. “I didn’t want to tell you.” I repeated. He looked stunned.

“Then why did you?” His words weren’t accusing, just uncertain.

“I needed someone to know.” I said, clawing at my arm. He nodded and sank down into his chair, placing his head in his hands once more. My heart was beating a bit too fast at this point; I was so terrified of what Jonny was thinking about me. I was beginning to feel a bit lightheaded, and I vaguely felt the desire to throw up again. I couldn’t stand to look at him because I was afraid he was disgusted by me…or angry at me for showing such weakness. Even worse, I was scared he might pity me. I was holding on desperately to the last shreds of my pride.

“Can we leave?” Jonny suddenly asked. He was looking around the room, his face twisted in horror. “I’ll get your suitcase, we can check out.” I considered this and found that I was in agreement. I didn’t want to be in the room anymore.

I stood up, keeping a hand firmly planted on the wall. It was slow and painful business, and I knew it looked pathetic. I risked a glance at Jonny, and he looked to be in as much pain as I was.

“I can…help you.” he offered, knowing full well I would refuse.

“I don’t need your help.”

“Then you shouldn’t have told me about the r--” he trailed off, looking away. I grimaced, running a hand down my thigh. “I’m sorry.”

“I don’t need your sympathy either.” I spat. I felt horrible for saying it, but it was too late to change anything now.

“Then tell me what you need...” Jonny begged, leaning forward in his chair and staring up at me. “…Because I don’t know what to do.” God, he sounded so helpless. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, Guy.” he whispered. “I’ve never…I’ve never been in this kind of situation before.”

I gathered the laptop in my arms, unable to respond. I put it back in the bag and zipped it up, having nothing else to put away. I was basically running on autopilot; I didn’t have the strength to think about what I was doing. I tilted my head towards Jonny, and something jolted in my mind as I realized there were tears in his eyes again. I was sure I should have never dragged him into my problems. He was so kindhearted and gentle; he just didn’t deserve to shoulder any piece of my burden.

I carefully slung my duffel over my shoulder and walked up to him. “Please don’t tell anyone.”

He stood up and looked me in the face. “You won’t tell the others?” I shook my head. “Then I won’t…but they’ll find out.”

“Then they’ll find out. But I can’t do it.”

“Why don’t you come over to my place for a while? Chloe’s not around, we could watch a movie.” I could tell he was just trying to act normally, trying to convince me things could go back to the way they were. I shook my head, despite if I wanted to go or not. “We could talk.”

I realized that had been Jonny’s true intent. “I can’t. You can’t…make me.”

He looked afraid. “You don’t have to. But please come over. You can stay the night, I’ll drive you back to the doctor’s for the lab results.” This time, I really considered the offer. The truth was I really didn’t want to be by myself. It was a painful combination of feelings; not wanting to be near anyone, yet not wanting to be alone.

“Can you drive me?”

“Of course.”

I nodded. “Okay.”
