Girls warm up for Cold(play)

 

NEXT summer is going to be one of the best ever for live music.

 

OASIS, KASABIAN, TAKE THAT, COLDPLAY and a full bill of festivals will see to that.

 

And I hear one particular outdoor gig has taken a brilliant new twist — with Coldplay adding GIRLS ALOUD as their main support act at Wembley.

 

Gig insiders reckon the deal is being signed and sealed this week.

 

The source said: “Coldplay are huge pop fans.

 

“They love Take That and all the mainstream chart stuff.

 

“Girls Aloud are the ideal support group. They will get the Wembley crowd worked up into a frenzy before the main attraction.

 

“CHRIS MARTIN is a fan and had them on his wishlist from the start of tour plans.”

 

More Coldplay dates are being announced on Friday, with tickets going on sale at 9.30am.

 

I would stick my mortgage on the big date with CHERYL COLE and her bandmates landing on Friday September 18.

 

That will certainly be one of the tickets of the summer — a bargain at £45.

So... I thought Jay-Z was the support act?! I don't want Jay-Z just turning up to do Lost+ live, I want him to do a few of his tunes too! Can somebody put me straight on this? Girls Aloud, Jay-Z then Coldplay??

 

EDIT: ..aaaaah, I understand now - a second Wembley date - well, I out of Jay-Z and Girls Aloud it would be HOVA all the way :)

The second show takes place on Friday 18th September 2009 and support will come from top popsters Girls Aloud. What the hell are they thinking, the last time I checked Coldplay were still a serious band?!! This is awful, Chris please see sense. With stunts like these you are turning our beloved band into a bloody joke! Kylie, Jay-Z, Girls Aloud... why do they feel it necessary to associate with these people rather than other bands, I mean how cheesy and commercial do they want to go?!

I see the recent collaborations as original and fresh; they’re [Coldplay] always trying to do something different with their music which I think is great, even if a small percentage of their fan base disagree. Rather than rely on the same old formula its fun to turn it on its head every once in a while.

You what?! So pop music shouldn't be regarded as a legitimate and "serious" form of music?!

 

As for arguing that in choosing such acts Coldplay are going cheesy and commercial, how stupid are you? Especially as there's a very strong case for Coldplay being far more of a commercial artist than all of them, having sold more records by far.

 

Jay-Z - cheesy?! One of the most influential musicians within and outside of his genre of the last 15 years.

 

Kylie Minougue is an institution now, and Girls Aloud make very good pop music.

 

Unless you're one of these music snobs that think that labelling something as 'pop' makes it a lesser form of music, despite the fact that what bands such as Coldplay, Keane, u2, killers etc etc are doing is also pop music.

I am not disagreeing with the direction of the new album or E.P am I, what I'm saying is that these pop associations are blatant attempts to sell more and more records at the expense of self respect. There is no need for all these collaborations, the band are more than capable of growing on their own. The problem with a lot of the people who write on here (EasyTo Please being an obvious example) is that they will never criticise anything the band does. Coldplay could fart in a bottle and you would lap it up! I'm talking about the kind of people who give Lost+ 10 out out 10 in the polls. Now I will get idiots posting 'do you even like Coldplay?' well yes I fucking do, I love them that's why it hurts me to see them pulling stunts like Girls Aloud to support them at one of their biggest gigs ever.

 

EasyToPlease take your head out of your butt, if I was a music snob I wouldn't have followed our boys for the last 8 years would I? My point is how about they show a bit more support for (decent) up and coming bands.

To be fair, Coldplay have supported more than their fair share of up and coming bands on this tour. In fact other than Duffy and Santogold, they've all been up and coming bands.

 

And I'm not saying that because I can't criticise them, because they do a lot of crap that pisses me off, but because it's true.

 

And regarding the Girls Aloud thing...it's one gig. It's a huge gig. Playing Wembley is a huge commercial thing, them being pretentious about it isn't going to do any good. And who cares if other people mock them for it? As long as they still continue to make music that you love, what's the problem?

A few points:

 

1. Apparently I will never criticise anything the band does - did you not read my review of Prospekt's EP just last week? I've made several points down the year about the downright shoddyness of Chris Martin's lyrics. If you haven't seen them fine, I don't expect people to read my rants, but don't make statements about my opinions if your statements are inaccurate.

 

For the record I gave both versions of Lost about 6 or 7/10.

 

2. I really don't think they are efforts to sell more records, simply because Coldplay as so commercial and large a band (and have been since AROBTTH) that they don't need such ventures. I think they are actually efforts to do what they want with their music (r.e. Jay-Z) and be a little bit different in their collaborations.

 

3. R.e. "There is no need for all these collaborations, the band are morIe than capable of growing on their own." - I would agree if the band weren't putting out music on their own at quite an alarming rate - if they hadn't just released 17 or so tracks in the last year that weren't collaborations I'd be worried. But there's no harm in them doing a few side projects to expand their range is there? Especially as some people really love these.

 

4. I don't think that Girls Aloud is a stunt. I think the thought behind it is that they are a big enough band (but still nowhere near the size of coldplay) to support in such a big venue. Also Girls Aloud appeal is more universal than many other bands.

 

You could argue bands such as Keane, Snow Patrol would be a more conventional choice but hey, the simple fact is, thanks to how popular indie pop is these days, such bands are simply too big to be a support act. Even the magnificent Elbow are too big for such a role these days.

 

Also, who wants to be conventional?

AT LAST! A point we can agree on. I could list loads of smaller bands who I'd love to support them - bands like Mew, Maps, Turin Brakes, Pete and the Pirates, Lightspeed Champion - the list could go on. Trouble is, which of those could draw a decent crowd as an arena support act - you'd get a situation which happens a lot at large gigs, with a huge venue empty and a support act playing to a crowd of about 100 people in a venue that holds thousands.

I have to say their last single was the best they'd ever done, though.

It was very well-written, and was rather reminiscent of something The Three Degrees might have done in their heyday.

Girls Aloud, bigger than Coldplay? I think I'll go back to hiding under a rock then. :laugh3:

 

But hey, it's probably not a bad idea to have Girls Aloud be the opening act for Coldplay.....it would definitely establish the boys once and for all as a ROCK band. :dozey:
