This is my favourite part of Coldplaying: the annual list.

WOW! What an amazing final list! I am shocked and really happy that Elbow placed 2nd I absolutely think it deserves to be there. Sigur Ros, had made so many peoples lists that I am not surprised it ranked so high. Personally I dont hear what others do in it. A little suprised Beck wasnt higher on the list. Ive never listened to The Last Shadow Puppets before. I reckon I should give it a shot now.

 

SpaceCadet, I had a great time with this thread, making my own list and watching as others posted theirs. It turned me on to alot of acts Id never heard of before. Thanks again for the very well done presentation. I wish I could have been here while it was all going down. But, we all have to work right.

The best quote I've ever heard about Sigur Ros is that it's music that wriggles into your mind, curls up next to your subconscious, and purrs. You don't hear it so much as you feel it very strongly, and what you feel is actually sort of what you bring with you. It's kind of a mirror in a way. Or a soundtrack- you let it drift along in the background and then suddenly it changes and feels like going over the top of a hill in a car really fast so that your stomach bottoms out.

 

I haven't heard the new album yet (bad Mo :tongue:) but they're one of my favorites. If you want to try to 'get' them, you should probably start with Agaetis Byrjun or Takk. (Saeglopur is the song that got me into them when I fell asleep to it and had the wackiest most beautiful heartbreaking dream ever) Try listening several times to a song or two letting it drift along rather than actively listening. Every note is dripping with meaning with them, but you have to kind of let it come to you.

 

Oh, here's a good one. The first time I heard this version of this song, I wound up in a little ball on the floor sobbing, and to this day I still don't quite know why. It is so beautiful, but a bit strange- it will be perfectly happy and content one day, and drenched with sorrow the next.

Undeniably rapturous and delicately insistent... Is how I would describe the song and video you posted. Your description of their music hit the mark. When Bjork's Vespertine was released I felt somewhat betrayed that she had left behind immediately endearing songs for more atmospheric, interludes of sound. It was only after several listens to a few songs at a time that I was able to grasp the beauty of the whole. Then I couldnt stop listening to it all the way through in a single sitting. It is a pleasure to know an artist intimately like that. I remember coming to know Dead Can Dance in the way you have described Sigur Ros' work. Seeing Dead Can Dance live brought tears to my eyes more than once. Sigur Ros deserves to be respected in the same way, no doubt. That song was beautiful.:)

I don't like scouting for girls but i have to admit i have the hoosiers album (ididn't buy it though! :lol:)

I think the hoosiers have wrote some alright songs but they're not in my top 50 bands by a long shot :lol:

I would never criticise anyone's taste in music - I grew up with my friends taking the mick out of me, each to their own, I say!

 

As for Vampire Weekend, I can understand how his voice might annoy some people. some sounds just get people going, don't they? There are plenty of acts I can appreciate make good music, but the singers voice just annoys me.

Yes so did i! with most of it being focused on the fact i liked coldplay! :stunned:

Just people saying "well you like coldplay so what do you know!?!" and they expect that to end an argument...idiots! :lol:

I spent my childhood being mocked by other kids... now I'm a teacher and it's the kids in my class that mock me :laugh3:

 

Ironically, when I was a kid, I was really in to A-ha... and it turns out Coldplay were too! So I guess I was always going to love them.
