As the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere approaches, the sight of green tennis surfaces on television to accompany warmer weather feels like the most natural thing in the world. In recent memory, early British summer after early British summer has been synonymous with a nation's yearning for something special to occur in a corner of southwest London. Where many before have failed, Andy Murray will carry the crushing burden of hope and expectation in a little under a week's time at the All England Tennis Club in Wimbledon.

When the winner of Roland Garros holds aloft the Coupe des Mousquetaires in Paris and clay is left behind, the hardcore British tennis fan suddenly finds that they are joined by countless other casual observers in willing on the home favourite as the giant that is the nation's tennis interest awakes from its eleven month slumber. While the tennisaholic finds the change from clay to grass visually jarring at first, the innumerable casuals may well find it natural, having probably not followed the season through the early steamy Australasian swing, the wintry indoor European circuit, the American Masters bonanza and the springtime clay overload. This sudden peak in the number of enthusiasts may be glaringly conspicuous to the knowledgeable followers, but is most likely a symptom of the media's persistence in otherwise confining tennis to the inside pages. The instantaneous and intense scrutiny that lands on any half-decent player from these shores around this time needs to be coped with admirably for there to be any real chance of success. Thankfully, it appears that Andy Murray, while possessing more tennis talent than any of his recent predecessors, also has his own feelings under control.

'Are you looking at my titles?' asks Shrek Williams as she goes jogging in a cheeky T-shirt before dressing up for party

A double take was required to catch the message on Serena Williams' pink T-shirt as she went jogging round Wimbledon yesterday.

Look closely and the Nike slogan reads: 'Are you looking at my titles?'

It's the sort of kit only former Wimbledon champions can wear and keep a straight face, but at 27, Serena has every reason to boast.

She has won 20 Grand Slam titles and more career prize money than any other female athlete in history.

Pounding pavements: Serena works hard to get into shape for the tournament

The two-times Wimbledon champion was jogging around Wimbledon with her personal trainer yesterday.

She is holed up in the suburb ahead of next week's tournament.

Last night, she took time out from her training schedule to pull on a glamorous pair of gold sequinned harem pants, which she paired with a white vest top for the pre-Wimbledon party at the Kensington Roof Gardens.

She was joined by her sister Venus, the defending champion who beat Serena in the final last year, who wore a satin white dress with crystal sandals.

British tennis star Anne Keothavong and Serbian Ana Ivanovic were among the players at the event.

Keothavong, 25, wore a sparkling gold gown which flattered her athletic figure, while 21-year-old Ivanovic showed off her figure in a black and gold prom dress.

A clutch of stars also attended - including Sugagbabe Heidi Range, Beyonce's former Destiny's Child bandmates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowlands, and Nancy Dell'Olio and Caprice.

Despite her non-mainstream look, Serena has been voted the fifth sexiest female tennis player of all time.

Number one in the poll of 5,000 Brits by Mivvi Luxury Ice Cream Lollies was Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova.

The blonde beauty made an impression on sports fans around the world with her flowing locks despite never winning a major tournament.

The 28-year-old, who was once ranked eighth in the world, was forced to retire from the sport in March 2004 due to chronic lower back troubles.

Kournikova once referred to herself as 'beautiful, famous and gorgeous'.

Another Russian player Maria Sharapova, was second and Gabriella Sabatini was third.

Steffi Graff, wife of Andre Agassi, was the fourth placed female, while Serena was followed by Martina Hingis, Sue Barker, Ana Ivanovic, Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams.

Andre Agassi was voted sexiest male player. He was famous for his 'mullet' hairdo earring but was one of the most successful players in history, landing eight Grand Slam titles and one Olympic gold medal.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal, currently ranked number one in the world, was second sexiest male.

One of the most dominant players, the 22-year-old The 'King of Clay' sports a rather impressive six-pack but also has an unusual fashion sense and enjoys playing in hot pink and yellow.

On the men's list, Swiss champion Roger Federer took third place followed by Australian Pat Cash and Swede Bjorn Borg.
