Andy Murray has won the AEGON Championships, held at London Queen's Club, coming out on top in the title match against America's James Blake, 7-5 6-4.

It is hard to recall a tournament week that has gone so smoothly for the British No. 1. Dispatching of every obstacle with consummate ease on the way to the final, the hardest task was of course left to last, but Murray again stepped up to overcome the Blake challenge. Having become the first Briton to claim this title since 1938, media and supporter expectation will hover over Murray when he takes to the courts at Wimbledon, starting a week tomorrow. If he can play as confidently and assuredly as he has this week, however, he will go far.

The match began with solid service holds for both players, with points being brilliantly constructed and executed. Blake was striking with purpose, but it was Murray's delicate manipulation of the ball that teased out a break in only the third game. The Scot's serve has been as impressive as ever this week, but he immediately appeared to drop his focus and allowed Blake to level the scores. Murray was clearly facing his biggest challenge of the week, as the American continued to more than hold his own with exquisite touch and efficient power-hitting. It was very much game on as the set progressed with Blake the more likely of the two to snatch any advantage. However, Murray steeled himself at 5-5 to increase the pressure, engaging in some gruelling rallies to earn that advantage for himself. The errors were creeping into the Blake game now and Murray took his chance to serve out the set at the first opportunity.

The second set began by following the same pattern as most of the first, both players holding serve with no great trouble. At 2-2, Murray caught a glimpse of a break opportunity at 0-30 up, but it was duly steered away from him by a combination of Blake's persistence and the Scot's own errors. The two began to move in on each other's serves, but it was Murray who again did that little bit extra to claim the breakthrough at 3-3. At 5-4 and serving for the title, the Scot again made no mistake to wrap the week up perfectly.

As leaps of faith go, saying that you will definitely go on to win a grand slam title is one that Andy Murray is far too sensible to make, at least in public. If pushed, he might say that the US Open offers him his best chance because of his hardcourt prowess, but Roger Federer believes the Scot's maiden major title could come at Wimbledon next month.

Federer will go into Wimbledon as the strong favourite to regain his title after his victory at the French Open on Sunday, a win that cemented his place in the history books as he became only the sixth man to complete a full set of major titles and, in the process, equalled Pete Sampras's overall record of 14.

With the pressure off, few would bet against Federer this time, especially with Rafael Nadal struggling to be fit because of knee trouble that worsened through the clay-court season. Nadal is to have more medical tests on his knees today and tommorrow, with an announcement about the results perhaps coming on Wednesday, but providing he is fit, Federer knows that reclaiming his crown will not be easy, especially with Murray improving fast. "Andy Murray's best surface might be grass – I think he's playing excellent," Federer said.

Murray has no place to hide from Wimbledon hype

LONDON, June 14 (Reuters) - Whether Andy Murray is walking his dog, picking up a newspaper or going out for dinner over the next few days, the Scot knows there is one thing he cannot escape from.

Wimbledon is only eight days away and, after becoming the first home-grown champion in 71 years at Queen's Club on Sunday, there is real anticipation that he could end Britain's long wait for a men's winner at the grasscourt grand slam.

"Regardless of whether it's like this next week or like four months ago, the majority of people that I speak to say, 'Good luck at Wimbledon' because it's kind of how people view tennis in this country," said Murray, who could become the first British man to triumph at the All England Club since Fred Perry in 1936.

"When I go for a walk with the dog, if I happen to bump into someone who my dog is playing with their dog, then I'll have a chat with them.

"But I'm going to live my normal life. I'm not going to start switching the TV off and not listening to radio.

"It doesn't matter what people write and say. It doesn't win me matches and doesn't lose me matches."

But life will be anything but normal for Murray and he can expect to be plastered on the front as well as back pages of British newspapers.

At the age of 22, Murray has a mature outlook on all the hype and the world number three's main goal is to break the Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal stranglehold at the championships.

BEST TENNIS

"You can let the pressure affect you if you want to. You can let the expectation get to you if you really want to but I'm just going to play tennis and not worry about the rest of the stuff, because I don't think it's good for your game," he said.

"I go on with the mentality that I'm going to win it, I'll have to play my best tennis ever to do it. It's so difficult to do. That's why no one in Britain's done it for such a long time, because it is that difficult.

"Especially right now with the guys that are in front of me in the rankings. In my opinion, they're the two best ever. So I'm going to have to beat them if I want to do that. That's not an easy thing to do."

Since the Queen's Club tournament is often regarded as a dress rehearsal for Wimbledon, Murray will also hope he can follow in the footsteps of Boris Becker, Pete Sampras and Nadal -- all of whom have won the two grass titles back-to-back.

Murray's victim on Sunday, James Blake, was among those who felt the Scot was a real contender for Wimbledon since he has already contested one grand slam final -- at last year's U.S. Open which he lost to Federer.

"Andy Murray is an excellent player," said the 29-year-old American. "He's got the ability to beat anyone in the world.

"It's just a matter of doing it at the right time. He's definitely a possibility to win Wimbledon."

Murray has come full circle at Queen's, the tournament where he made his ATP Tour debut as a precocious, gangly and rather unfit 18-year-old talent in 2005.

"I serve more like a man now," he said. "Last couple of years, I could serve, big, big serves but I could also miss serves by two, three metres. The consistency wasn't there because I wasn't strong enough to keep it up for long periods of matches."
