To $160 million!

Gosh, it's almost like they're printing money up there. ;)

EDIT: It's interesting he'll be using Lincoln's bible to swear-in on, because Lincoln is responsible for more American deaths than... well... just about anyone in history!

When a country is in ruins, the people in power rob the treasury and pillage what they can. The ship is sinking and both parties are taking everything that's not bolted down. Three cheers for CHANGE! haha

Enjoy the honeymoon... it won't last long...

Nah, it'll last a while. Look how long FDR's honeymoon lasted/continues to last.

Comeon now, we need to stimulate the economy and improve the mood in the country - to reverse the negative slide!! Obama really does want to do the right things, and with enough support, he will have the backing to do so. But we must provide the push. I'm feeling optimistic - but if the economy slides any further, that means greater turnover in Congress, and that's a good thing too. Out with the cronies, in with the representatives of the people!

Licoln isn't responsible for more American deaths than just about anyone in history, Jay - it took the civil war to end the argument over the abuse of 'state's rights', that allowed the institution of slavery to go on as it had - truly the underlying cause of the war, and Lincoln did what the times called for - to end the institution of slavery. Conisider the arrogant attitudes of the southern gentry towards Americans of African origin, as the real culprit - they refused to acknowledge their wrongs and change their ways, as they were depriving a fair percentage of Americans their due rights to life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness. Unwilling to right their wrongs when faced with the verdict in the court of human justice, the war was an inevitable result, and they bear the responsibility for it and for the deaths that followed. They could have opted for industrialization and mechanized harvesting equipment, but instead stuck with the wrong-headed ideas of slavery. And consider also, the Northen Generals who could have ended the war decisively and quickly had they acted swiftly, but their reluctance led to a long, bloody war. Lincoln had to fire them one-by-one to get the job done. Unfortunate as well, Johnson who followed Lincoln let things slide backwards and allowed the confederate senators to resume their posts unchecked. But Lincoln was a progressive, moving the country forward against the repressive, backward forces of the past. I for one am grateful for what Lincoln did, and though it was a horrible conflict, it moved us closer to the ideals of fairness for all.

FDR's new deal may not have been perfect, but it was an honest attempt at getting people back to work, and lowering the costs of owning a new home, which led to the beginnings of the suburbs. I'm no economic expert, but wasn't it during Roosevelt's time that the glass steigel act had been passed, and put in place some very important checks on the markets, to prevent another black monday from occuring? Of course, the act was repealed not too long ago, and the inevitable result of an ungoverned system has left us with unstable markets ever since the controls were taken off..

Government cannot produce wealth, thus cannot stimulate the economy with anything that will last or be good.

If the government TRULY want a stimulated economy, they should become smaller and cut taxes and that will provide the stimulus to the economy. It is impossible for a government to truly stimulate an economy.

PS. Obama's stimulus is exactly what Bush did, cut taxes, increase spending and give out rebate's...didn't work for Bush, why will it work for Obama?

Oh and Chuck, the government before FDR caused the market to crash, and continued the same polices that caused it during FDR...it wasn't any policy FDR or the government did that helped the economy in the Great Depression, it was winning the world war. Show me one thing FDR did that improved the economy....

Lets not vote the same politicians in over and over again? Simple solution...

Career politicians and corrupt wall street are in a marriage of greed and corruption and all we can do is vote them back in and give them more power? Maybe the American public is to blame for all the mess were in.

Santa Claus 2024!

Lincoln established the Federal government as the central arbiter of power, and made the office of the presidency akin to a monarch. The purpose of the Civil War wasn't to end slavery, as we are taught in state-schools, but to keep the State intact. Any state's primary motive is survival. That's why slavery was allowed for so long in the first place - as a compromise to appease the civilian population. It wouldn't have been possible if it hadn't been for the government's support, like returning escaped slaves to their masters and keeping slaves from owning businesses.

** well, some say the United States was abolished, and a legal entity, the United States Corporation created during Lincoln's term.. Could be true, but sounds pretty weird. The state's claims to rights above the Federal Constitution's were part of the problem; mainly it was to maintain slavery that kept the southern states insisting on states rights. The office of the president was never quite the king's throne until more recently as far as I see it Jay, when the process of signing statements went through the roof. Lincoln may have temporarily made the office powerful, even going so far as to suspend Habeas Corpus, but recent presidents have escalated it to a degree unheard of in our history..**

The purpose of the Civil War wasn't to end slavery, as we are taught in state-schools, but to keep the State intact. I think it was ultimately to end slavery, but had to be sold on the notion of keeping the country united initially. Lincoln simply could not breech the matter until he had more support, and even then it almost cost him the election. It was a risk he was willing to take, and one that may have saved the U.S. Any state's primary motive is survival. That's why slavery was allowed for so long in the first place - as a compromise to appease the civilian population. It wouldn't have been possible if it hadn't been for the government's support, like returning escaped slaves to their masters and keeping slaves from owning businesses.

A right of property which was stated in the US Constitution initially as well, but a compromise to ensure a union of states, and one in which some of the signers objected to. But after a time it became more and more clear that the matter was simply wrong, the industrial revolution was afoot, and instead of choosing machinery advancements, the south continued to choose slavery. I think it became a battle involving strong-headed powerful men who simply refused to admit their errors, and begin the process of change. The arrogance of power is not the sole province of heads of state..

Wasn't it Jefferson who said, after penning the Constitution, that the institution of slavery would corrupt all those who were involved in it; ultimately corrupting even Jefferson himself?

Slavery is terribly corrupting, it even corrupts the enslaved (because they begin to believe they are inferior to their masters, and they forget their rights).

Jefferson said this, also, which I think alludes to the fact that we're all slaves:

"It is strangely absurd to suppose that a million of human beings, collected together, are not under the same moral laws which bind each of them separately."

So in the same way that the government is a collection of individuals, slave owners are a separate class (a special interest group, if you will). And then we can extrapolate these things to that awesome government invention, the corporation! Oh gosh it's so late.
