February 21, 200917 yr Maybe not. I think higher album sales here may have helped the cause. All the winners this year had extremely high sales. The stadium gigs (other than one Wembers) are all still far from sold out too, whereas TT sold like 15 out in minutes. A few years ago Coldplay would have done too. UK has always been tough for Coldplay critically but they've always had the UK fans on side, but even that seems to be sliding. Just trying to figure out why it has happened with an album which is (in my opinion) VASTLY superior to X&Y
February 21, 200917 yr They got frozen out? Where is people's taste? I mean they lose at the Grammys to that awful Plant/Kraus record, and now no Brit Awards? Where IS people's taste????????????
February 21, 200917 yr "UK has always been tough for Coldplay critically but they've always had the UK fans on side, but even that seems to be sliding. " Their US fans are on their side, never fear. People need to tell the critics to piss off.
February 21, 200917 yr Don't think you can compare TT and Coldplay re: their stadium gigs, cause TT are just everybody's darlings at the moment and everybody will go and see them. I know tons of people you don't have a ticket yet for coldplay but want to see them, but most people are just waiting if they still have a job in September. I haven't really been around on previous coldplay releases and tours. As I also was on of those people you always liked their music but never really went to a show until this year where they totally blew me away - live there are for me one of the best I have ever seen! 2009 looks to me like a massive gig year but also where we are having the biggest recession since god knows when so that doesn't help the situation. P.
February 21, 200917 yr Take That fans are going through the same recession though, surely. Media darlings or not people either have the money or they don't. That being said Take That didn't win any Brits either :P
February 21, 200917 yr But I think TT base or people who go to the gig are wider then Coldplay's. Plus open air's in September are just not very appaling...been to Robbie Williams gigs in Milton Keynes in September 2006 and it was bl***dy cold in the evening! So, I was not impressed when they announced the dates for September :(
February 21, 200917 yr Coldplay's is pretty wide too. Isn't like they're some little indie group. You may be right about timing though, I guess with TT hogging the stadiums for the rest of the year they had no choice.
February 21, 200917 yr LOL...true...plus you will have most likely U2 between TT and Coldplay...so, there was not much space left I guess...
February 21, 200917 yr Oasis still have loads left too :idea2: Not that that's a great basis for comparison :P

February 21, 200917 yr Iron Maiden is around since a long time...even the music is not for me, I heard their live shows are amazing.

February 21, 200917 yr Coldplay - who came away empty handed from the ceremony - asked for a bed in their dressing room so they could have a nap if needed. It says much about them that the thought they’d have groupies there didn’t even cross our mind once. http://www.scandalist.com/2009-02-19/brits-backstage-gossip/

In any case doesn't Wembley have a sliding roof? They can always close it to avoid another Alexandra-Palace style gig that Coldplay did back in 2005 (i.e. a washout!)
February 22, 200917 yr I think I went Tuesday - well, I went three times but Tuesday was cooold!!! Yes, Wembley has a sliding roof but don't actually think that it was ever used...

Ah OK, I went on the Friday night! I remember it well - I had just moved house the day before and still had everything in crates!

They can always close it to avoid another Alexandra-Palace style gig that Coldplay did back in 2005 (i.e. a washout!) All the seats are covered by the roof, but I don't think it has a roof like Cardiff's millennium stadium, so the pitch is open from the wembley website: "Does the roof close? Will I get wet if it rains? On event days at Wembley Stadium the roof is always in its fully closed position – lined up with the touchlines leaving the seats covered but the playing surface uncovered. This is how the stadium has been designed as it allows for maximum sunlight to get to the pitch. We do not move the sliding roof whilst guests are in the stadium. In the event of light rain, the seats are all under cover. In the event of extreme rain some guests on the front rows of level 1 can get wet and so we would recommend guests dress appropriately. As the stadium’s roof does not close fully, guests with tickets for the pitch area at one of the stadium’s concerts will get wet in the event of rain."
February 22, 200917 yr Not more. That's not was I was saying: They played enough. Just sooner. They disappeared for 6 months after VLV came out, anyone who wasn't on this forum and following them around via news stories from wherever in the world they were would have forgotten about them and the album. It isn't like they released major singles that charted high, they weren't on TV, no reports in papers from gigs, not many songs on the radio. Whereas all you see here is KoL and Take That, Elbow and Duffy. There has to be a reason it didn't sell as well here as everywhere else, surely. The album wasn't seen as a success here, well not in comparison to others, that of course will have affected the awards. Mimixxx;, I don't thinkl we can blame Coldplay for their lack of Brit success for not being in the UK enough on the early leg of the tour. The Brits for the last 4-5 years now has made a point of studiously eschewing the favourite candidate for someone else, so that they're perceived as..... welll I don't know what... stupid! I haven't been this mad about an award going to the wrong recipient since Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Picture Oscar in 2006.... that was also for political reasons as well.

Fancy putting on a roof that does not close fully. Bloody British builders, always leaving building jobs half done! :)

Best Album went to the album that sold the most copies last year...Duffy was a definite favourite and she won three. ;) My point wasn't that them not being here directly influenced the awards, if you read it properly, it was to do with why VLV didn't sell as well here as it did everywhere else and whether THAT had an affect on the awards ;)
