The BRITs 2009 Thread

Featured Replies

I'm in my early 30's and most of my friends hate Coldplay. One commented that he was really surprised when Violet Hill came out 'cos he liked it, and in his words "I always though Coldplay were a little bit gay"

Maybe it's a northern bias against Coldplay then? (You're from Liverpool Alison, aren't you?) I went to uni in Yorkshire and can see how our nicely-spoken middle-class boys might be dissed up there, while bands with more attitude like Oasis get respect. Seriously, I have never never once had a negative comment about being a Coldplay fan, the worst I think was my friend saying he didn't really want to come to a gig with me because he wasn't a huge fan of Chris' falsetto (more fool him!) His partner was friends with Will at uni and went to the band's very first gigs (Laurel Tree and Dublin Castle). Not that that means anything, but something to mention to make my post more interesting perhaps :laugh3:

I'm sure Coldplay are not bothered.....

It's a pretty sure thing they are absolutely gutted...:\

Could be the North/South divide...

You're right that I live in Liverpool, but I myself am a Southerner who moved here.

ONe of my friends HATES them with a passion and when I asked her, she went off on one, and one of her main reasons were that they are middle class...

I meant more where you live (and so the people you're surrounded by) than where you originally come from. I just can't believe all this negativity, as I've never, ever seen it myself.

Wow, that's crazy!

All of my friends thoroughly despise them, but they never even give reasons, just give long, unintelligent rants about how awful they are and why [insert shitty, unsigned group here] is better. It drives me absolutely insane and I hate it! I don't criticize their music

How can they win 3 grammys and get snubbed at the Brits. it makes no sense. When are people going to recognize Coldplay as the great band that they are. I'm sorry, but Duffy, Elbow, and Girls Aloud combined haven't accomplished half the things Coldplay have. And Iron Maiden needs to cut their hair and have normal drug free lives now that theyre all 50+.

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant, but it's interesting maybe that all my Northern friends hate them and I'm a bit different to them by being from the South and realising that Coldplay are awesome :D

hello coldplay fans

well a bit of knowledge for you, and this is from a maiden fan of 25 yrs, believe it or not i am not a one eyed fan and i do think coldplay are not as bad as many metal fans make out.

but i have to say you never had a chance when up against a band like maiden for a fan vote.

you have to ask yourself, how can a band like maiden have been going so long, well its the incredible management team behind them and the collective of nutters including myself who follow them with devotion.

ok, did you know that coldplay are a sanctuary (an iron maiden song)management band, sanctuary were formed by rod smallwood and andy taylor back in the late 70,s in order to manage an up and coming metal band, yep you guessed right iron maiden, forward 20 years and they sign coldplay. so we are not poles apart. just been going a little bit longer.

rod and andy sold sanctuary about 18mths ago and have set up a new management company and they now solely look after maiden and they are dong a great job, the only promtion needed to secure a win was a small piece about athe nomination on the website, the fans did the rest, as bruce said on the show they are on tour at the moment but he knew who to thank.

well i am sorry if some of the maiden fans come here to gloat but it is not everyday that we get to stick one in the eye of the music industry.

no hard feelings hey.

up the irons!!!! and maybe if you check them out we will see you somewhere back in time!!!

the strongest drugs they do is a cup of tea mate!!

Would be sad if they really were thou after having the biggest selling album of last year and 3, yes 3 Grammys! They have won best band and album twice before as well as a few other Brits. It doesn't matter its just 'awards' at the end of the day.

Tom Jones is grey!

I think it's all too easy, even a lazy response, to turn one's nose up at our favourite band, which is a great shame. I'm a huge huge music lover, not just a Coldplay fan, but for my money they're easily the best band in the world right now in terms of recorded output and live shows (a bit short as they may be). It's a real shame that class and/or regional affection should interfere with peoples' enjoyment of the incredible music.

???

I just told my mom that Iron Maiden beat Coldplay, and she went "Gross! Who decides these awards, anyway?!"

And she doesn't even really like Coldplay! :laugh3:

Tom Jones is gay!

That's not unusual....

North/South divide regarding Coldplay? I doubt it.

Just a hypothesis fella, but I find it extraordinary that everyone I know around here loves the band, from toddler to pensioner, while there are apparently a lot of people who are scathing. In fact the only person I know who is openly hostile to the band is from Lancashire. Got an alternative theory - would love to hear it?!

believe it or not i am not a one eyed fan

Eh...?

What have you got against optically challenged people..? You two-eyed Iron Maiden loving freak... :P

:laugh3:

Here is the video

Here is the video

OMG! thanks! that was amazing!!! the red butterflies were great for VIVA!!AH!!

Thanks for the video! Great performance, although not quite as good as the Grammys in my opinion (if you don't count Jay-Z :P)...

Is it just me or did the song sound slower than usual?

You know you might have a point there. My close family all love Coldplay and don't understand why on earth they didn't win anything at the Brits... but I have to say, I am middle class. I live in the South and it does feel like the class divide actually has something to do with how people see them as a band. And it's not just them.. I'm a Keane fan also, and the same kind of "gay" and "posh" jokes seem to apply to them also  At least, that's how it feels to me from my experience. I'm only 18 and at college, but it's not a particuarly good one and not private. I am viewed as pretty "posh" by alot of the students for the way I talk and my taste in things. When I've mentioned Coldplay to others, they often pull disgusted faces. They think Chris Martin is "gay" and can't sing or that they're middle class, so therefore are considered lame grammar school boys. Other people who are much more of musical snobbery hate them because they think their music is crap and they're over-hyped, oh and that Chris has a huge ego. I just don't understand the level of hate they get from some people. It's like they're an insult to music or something. Really, what is wrong with them? I just don't see why they're deserving of being loathed. They make great music and Chris is such a funny guy... people are missing out on alot. ;)

Anyway, to stay on topic.. I love the fact that they had blue white and red butterfly confetti as to stick with the British theme. :D

OUT. Nao. You have no place here. OUT!

It's really interesting to read these comments about the brits, because they sound exactly the same as Australians complaining about the ARIAs. Seems like everybody thinks their music awards are lame, lol!

I was hoping that Coldplay would take at least one home. But I like Duffy and Girls Aloud (haven't heard their most recent offering, so can't comment on that) so I don't know. Better luck next time I guess :(

But the ARIAs WERE crap this year, apart from The Presets winning and Faker perfoming IMO. Gabriella Climi winning best new artist? GTFO out of my country's music industry, girly!
