The BRITs 2009 Thread

Featured Replies

Well, I think that is what Chris meant when he said the british have a problem celebration themselves...

The brits always trying to look like they won't go down the mainstream road, and will go for not the obvious winner.

They have to ask themselves why Coldplay win Grammys but not one Brit this year??? Mainly because whoever gives this awards out trying to be cool.

Take That for example didn't win any brits the last couple of years who were given out by the commitee only ever the fan votes.

For the ones who havent seen it ...

But the ARIAs WERE crap this year, apart from The Presets winning and Faker perfoming IMO. Gabriella Climi winning best new artist? GTFO out of my country's music industry, girly!

Oh, no I agree somewhat. But it's just that I hear it EVERY year.

they're our winners

Awww, that's nice said :nice:

Nice to find another Coldplayer as old as me....:P

Same here ;)

But... Stupid Brits, I still don't get it. How can a band with immense worldwide succes and a best selling album that is no. 1 in 36 countries not get any regonition in their own country? :(

If you don't know who Elbow are, they have won the Mercury award twice. They have been together for as long as Coldplay, if not longer. Their recent album is really excellent, and they have a very niche following.

The Brits are voted for by the British public, so we can't really blame the industry on this although BBC Radio 2 have been pushing for Elbow to win, and Guy Garvey their lead singer has a new show on Radio 2 coming out. I love Coldplay, but for me, VLV and X&Y was not their best albums, and there are better bands out there when up against VLV, as much as I hate to admit it. But I don;t get Duffy, then again, I've never really listened to her. Duffy must have been getting some major exposure and I think it must partly have come down to the campaigns behind the band as the Maiden fan above explained.

:bigcry:

POOR COLDPLAY!

:o

:laugh3:

Ah, who needs Brit awards to smile about when you've got pix of Guy Berryman and cheeky Berrygirls to share them with

:o

dont tell me you guys were expecting less from me .. :sneaky:

thanks for the youtube link everyone ! that was a very nice performance. :nice:

they still rule the world

You know you might have a point there. My close family all love Coldplay and don't understand why on earth they didn't win anything at the Brits... but I have to say, I am middle class. I live in the South and it does feel like the class divide actually has something to do with how people see them as a band. And it's not just them.. I'm a Keane fan also, and the same kind of "gay" and "posh" jokes seem to apply to them also  At least, that's how it feels to me from my experience. I'm only 18 and at college, but it's not a particuarly good one and not private. I am viewed as pretty "posh" by alot of the students for the way I talk and my taste in things. When I've mentioned Coldplay to others, they often pull disgusted faces. They think Chris Martin is "gay" and can't sing or that they're middle class, so therefore are considered lame grammar school boys. Other people who are much more of musical snobbery hate them because they think their music is crap and they're over-hyped, oh and that Chris has a huge ego. I just don't understand the level of hate they get from some people. It's like they're an insult to music or something. Really, what is wrong with them? I just don't see why they're deserving of being loathed. They make great music and Chris is such a funny guy... people are missing out on alot. ;)

Anyway, to stay on topic.. I love the fact that they had blue white and red butterfly confetti as to stick with the British theme. :D

Thanks so much for your post, it was a fascinating read, exactly what I'd been wondering about :)

I guess Coldplay just aren't seen as having enough 'attitude' or are enough 'street' for many people in England, and that i'm lucky and privileged enough to come from a background where these things aren't important. I do wonder if it's just coincidence that everyone around me either loves them or at least likes them, including my aunt who's in her late eighties!?

they still rule the world

Well said!

Only a couple of awards get voted by the publich (best single, best live act), best album isn't voted by the public, I don't understand why they always give those awards to people you have one album out and then you have to wonder if you ever going to hear another album from them.

I can remember a couple of years ago...the brits were all about The Darkness...where did they go?

In vote a band like coldplay won't ever stand a chance against girls/boyband and metal bands.

It's not so much that Coldplay didn't win it's more like why the reason behind hit....which in mind doesn't have anything to do with music.

Petra

Didn't that bloke in the Sun say yesterday that Coldplay might be robbed and not win any awards according to his insider?

So this bloke was right it seems... :dozey:

I can't believe they didn't win at least one award.

But well life goes on. ;) Hope the band won't be too disappointed. They did a fantastic job.

Maybe they gave Duffy loads to make up for last year - they picked Adele ahead of her for the critics choice awards and Duffy went on to get to number one first and sell shed-loads of records.

I think the press in particular don't know what to make of Coldplay sometimes because they're not your typical rock stars. They don't get drunk/do/drugs/have a different girlfriend every week. They don't get pulled in to media fights with other bands... in other words they don't provide good copy for the journalists.

So many of my friends seem to admire Liam Gallagher, because apparently he's a normal guy - all that effing & blinding, making fun of people and generally behaving like a yob are supposedly good qualities...

Oh, no I agree somewhat. But it's just that I hear it EVERY year.

True, true.

^^ The press have had loads of good copy from Coldplay over the years. Any band that gets as much space in The Sun as Girls Aloud and Lily Allen must be doing something 'right'!!

hello coldplay fans

well a bit of knowledge for you, and this is from a maiden fan of 25 yrs, believe it or not i am not a one eyed fan and i do think coldplay are not as bad as many metal fans make out.

but i have to say you never had a chance when up against a band like maiden for a fan vote.

you have to ask yourself, how can a band like maiden have been going so long, well its the incredible management team behind them and the collective of nutters including myself who follow them with devotion.

ok, did you know that coldplay are a sanctuary (an iron maiden song)management band, sanctuary were formed by rod smallwood and andy taylor back in the late 70,s in order to manage an up and coming metal band, yep you guessed right iron maiden, forward 20 years and they sign coldplay. so we are not poles apart. just been going a little bit longer.

rod and andy sold sanctuary about 18mths ago and have set up a new management company and they now solely look after maiden and they are dong a great job, the only promtion needed to secure a win was a small piece about athe nomination on the website, the fans did the rest, as bruce said on the show they are on tour at the moment but he knew who to thank.

well i am sorry if some of the maiden fans come here to gloat but it is not everyday that we get to stick one in the eye of the music industry.

no hard feelings hey.

up the irons!!!! and maybe if you check them out we will see you somewhere back in time!!!

the strongest drugs they do is a cup of tea mate!!

Totally right, we knew we didn't stand a chance against the Maiden and Eddie! But Sanctuary have never managed Coldplay. It was firstly independently, then Nettwerk and then 3D (with Dave from Nettwerk).

Don't worry guys, they're our winners. Pop always get good phone vote response, there was deffo a metal fans online surge foe the Live act and as for the other two... Elbow are top so it's nice to get some recognition at last. But of course you can't give an award to both so all I can say is...

...just because you're losing doesn't mean you've lost. Even when you haven't, erm, actually won.

Debs, I agree with you.. But.. Coldplay is huge and they have sold so many albums. They're album has been no.1 in 36 countries, how could that not be worth a best album award!?

Sure the boys are our winners, they've spoiled us to the bone with all the things they've given us the past year and a half! But in my opinion, they deserved to win.

I hope they aren't affected too much with this, although I'm sure they are somewhat disappointed too.

From what I've heard and seen from the special War Child gig, the boys had a blast anyway. And I hope that the fact that the first row was taken by die-hard Colplayers gave them a warm feeling and showed them how much we love them!

So.... at least they were beaten by Elbow which is better than Kaiser Chiefs last time.

I think the Brits are weird. They have no problem with voting Coldplay Best Band and Album the first two times they were nominated but then they must think "hang on, we're getting predictable" so give someone else a look in. The next time they give Kaiser Chiefs the Band but Coldplay the album.... but shouldn't the best group have made the best album? Unless as in this year they think that in fact a group didn't make best album, but a solo artist....

Again, Duffy Best Female, no problem with that as she did have the best selling album in UK last year but.... if she's already won breakthrough award isn't that a waste of a category?

It's almost like they want to be fair but can't be... there was no way Radiohead could win after changing the whole way records are sold, it would reflect badly on the BPI but they had to give them the nod at least.

I hadn't noticed until after it was over but Keane must have released to late for eligibility as that would have made for an interesting competition!

I would rather Coldplay won Best Group and Elbow Best Album but of course if I'd have had my way, they'd have won all their 4!

By the way, I have 4 Music on and have had to listen to Duffy warble vibratto THREE songs in last 15 minutes. She needs her adenoids out, sounds like she has a permanent cold.

My only big shock is that Speed of Sound won Best Single voted for by public at their last Brits and Viva didn't and in my opinion is a way better single, so I wonder how Girls Aloud managed to get more votes? Wow.... hopefully we came second!

Great post Debs thanks :)

I completely agree, I absolutely love Warwick Avenue, but last night Duffy seemed to be warbling for Britain...is there such an event at the 2012 Olympics? If so we're gonna get at least one gold! :D

As for the pop vote, I've come round to the opinion that Coldplay have become a pop band themselves, and have just started a thread on it. I won't be posting my opinions there for quite a while as I'm really interested to see what others think, but I'm sure I can let a little bit slip here and say that, yes, I think they are now, but in the purest sense of the word; following the Beatles down that path, and the first band to do so imho.

Duffy has been on Belgian radio all morning as well. I guess winning so many Brits is good publicity. Well, I'm happy for her, but I don't really like her songs :\

After talking about the Brits they have played Elbow as well, and them I do like. But they only seem to know one song of them over here: One Day Like This. Come on, they have many more good songs!

But no word about Coldplay on radio here. Like it's normal that a band like Coldplay doesn't win awards in their own country :( I still don't get it! Muscial taste can of course be different, but a best selling album no. 1 in 36 countries and a sold out worldwide tour... Numbers don't lie, right?

Hahaha, you made me laugh out loud about the "Duffy havin' a permanent cold" thing

Of course if we had it our way they would've won all four, but somehow this feels like Coldplay doesn't get any recognition at all and that makes me sad.

Did you talk to the boys afterwards? How did they feel about it?

I'm listening to a Dutch radio station and they have this special theme about the (almost) passed decade (2000 up to now).

According to this radio station, Coldplay is the biggest band from the year 2000 until now, and they are being played almost every hour, old ones as well as new ones.. :)

My only big shock is that Speed of Sound won Best Single voted for by public at their last Brits and Viva didn't and in my opinion is a way better single, so I wonder how Girls Aloud managed to get more votes? Wow.... hopefully we came second!

Is it:

A) Because they danced around in their underwear last night?

B) Because they performed right before the phone numbers were announced?

C) Because Cheryl is an ITV employee?

D) All of the above?

Don't they always seem to be dancing around showing a fair bit of flesh at awards shows, be it generally scantily cladness or a bit of leg?

But at least they aren't at the level of
