Some people have took 20 years back

Featured Replies

It so sad that it seems that this country has took 20 years back in the past 2 -3 years. I even feel bad about raising the subject however some sections of the media have seemed to jump on a racist bandwagon.

All this media hype about "asylum seekers" in my eyes and experiences seem to be driven by a small minority to raise xenophobic feelings in the less educated and the ignorant people of this world.

The problem what this country has with refuges is a very small one, the argument of "they are taking all out jobs" is a very placid one, the word is in this country if you want to work. There is always a Job for you to do. People being treated as second class citizens it is completely out of order. People for some bizarre reason have prejudices against a person skin colour, religion, innuendo's and sexual orientation. This is not my country it is everyones country. Everyone should sit doen listen to the words of coldplay and the world would be a better place.

LOL Hicksy better not read this thread :)

OK immigrants....

1st point, this is England, a country full of English people, you want to seek asylum in this country, you learn the language, you learnt the culture, you adapt. We don't adapt to you. Take the US, people who seek nationalisation in US must pledge allegiance to the flag, be able to speak english/spanish (two main languages) If they were to try that here, it would be deemed racist, nationalistic. But it makes sense, you see those Iraqi's killed at a railway crossing because they couldnt speak english and so didn't see the signs?

Second, all this political correctness crap about things like not flying St George's flags unless for special occasions, incase it intimidates or portrays a nationalistic viewpoint to those from other countries....wtf? This is England, it's OUR flag, we should have the right to fly it wherever we want. Ever go to the USA? There are Stars and stripes EVERYWHERE! We pander to the minorities far too often in this country, incase it upsets them. That's wrong. It leads to a lot of frustrated people.

3rd. the soft touch the UK is to asylum seekers...they come in, they get a house given to them to live in...they then sublet this house to other asylum seekers, thus making a tidy profit and driving around in a Merc...wtf?? How many UK nationals are on the housing list right now, but can't get one due to there not being any available, yet asylum seekers get them pretty much straight away.

4th. Many refugees come from the middle east...this means they cross through at least 3 or 4 1st world countries where they could claim asylum, Italy, Spain, France, etc...but do they stay there? No they get shipped through because those countries don't want to deal with them and the asylum seekers know themselves it will be easier to stay in the UK. We become the last point of call, place of no return, and we are lumbered with them.

I'm sorry, but this a country with 60 million people, a country that fits into Texas like 10 times or something...yet we have 1/5th the population of the US in a small country...do the maths, we're filling up.

I'm not saying don't take immigrants, because everyone should be safe from torture...but there needs to be a quota per year, and there needs to be a way to test the validity of the cases far quicker than they can now. Too many ppl are just coming in for an easy ride. Europe needs to do more and take their share, instead of letting them just run through up to us.

/rant over.

There are a total of 51.000 refugues in this country.

Only thats less then 1 - 1000 in this country

thats the official stats? not including the ones who have gone missing? or entered illegally?

To save myself rehashing your points, i shall simply say i agree. I talk about this a lot w/ my family whenever we see a new story about it, England has become a soft touch on this, the whipping boys of Europe on this, come on in!, it's England, we're pushovers!! What irritaes me is yes, there is no law(s) about learning English, etc...so then they largly make no effort to either...it's sad really, and is becoming a growing problem that the Gov. will eventually have no option but to address..it's not turning Eng. into a melting pot, quite the opposite, it's becoming more and more segregated because those coming in live the same way they did in their own country, (language, way of life etc) which to a certain extent is understandable, but it also means no one comes together, all it means is they come for state benefits. It is reallly disturbing and something that i've started to see on a day to day basis. Don't get me wrong i'm no Nationalist let's send them back kinda guy, i'm of 2 nationalities myself (UK/US) but, i do think that the longer this policy of open doors goes on the more it stirs English people's frustration of seeing the social ramifications thereof--i mean you ever met an asylum seeker? Talked to one, i'd love to, to share their world, get a glimpse of their perspective, day to day issues. Thing is I am not in contact w/ anyone like this whether it be in the work environment or the educational one. Am I an exception then? Well i can't say, but i think therein lies the problem, this lack of social interaction--it's not good for the national identity or the future health of the state.

^^ Interesting link to read

51,000 registered asylum seekers...sure...but "Estimates of illegal workers in the UK (people who have entered the country but have not sought asylum) are usually put at between 500,000 (the government) and 1 million (Immigration Service Union)" blimey thats a lot bigger percentage.

Also "Estimates suggest that the Home Office loses touch with thousands of failed asylum seekers each year and that only a quarter to a third of failed seekers are removed."

Both quotes come from the above web page...

That is true about the segregation...it isn't a melting pot, it becomes a little country in a town...look what happened in Burnley and Leeds and Oldham a few years ago...because there was no integration....race riots :(

*whew* that articles a whopper, i'll have to read that in stages

but this grabbed my attention:

The East of England region (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) contains two of the country’s ‘cluster areas’ – Peterborough and Ipswich. These are areas where asylum seekers are sent under the government’s dispersal programme in order to relieve some of the responsibility of London and the South (for more information on this, see the section Asylum seekers in the UK)

see this is what i don't like, when we start seeing terms like "dispersal." I think it's a sad day when governments sit around discussing "dispersing" human beings as if they were bloody royal mail packages or something. Yes, relieve resposibility! Oh the Irony, Europe's been doing that for years!

I love threads like these, it gets the old brain cogs whirring. I of course will contribute one line as I am at work

yes, it is nice to engage the brain once in a while, a welcome relief from the inane mindless drivel i usually post :stunned:

i promise not to rant but i am strongly anti-immigration for all but exceptional cases..

too hott to discuss now

lol Simon, I knew your stance anyway, after our many discussions :)

so I went on a rant for you :D

I am finding the stance being taken in here quite unblevable, I belive in free will to all and that also means equal rights.

Try listening to Politick

I think if people want to be let into this country then they must contribute to it; turning down £250,000 houses as shelter through government aid because its "not what they're used to" does not fill me with a positive attitude towards this subject

wtf!? have you read the thread closely? No one is suggesting any infringement on free will or equal rights at all ( i cant defend the others, they have their own voice, but read my posts carefully, it's clear i'm not doing either of those things), in fact paradoxically if you examine the way the government treats these people you'll find that by throwing benifits at them and shipping them to random parts of the country and then forgetting about them is not the answer either, in fact it's pretty calous and inhumane. THAT'S why there is a problem in England with this.l And free will, equal rights? Wake up, in a perfect world maybe, if there were such things these people would have never left their own countries in the first place...furthermore, yes perhaps we do have these things here, but they have become misconstrued under the guise of state benefits which some (asylum seekers & UK citizens alike), not all mind you, sponge off of, because it is their "free will." So, well it's a viscious cycle, a no win situation I know, both sides are losing out, and it's not going to be solved in a hurry. The Government has to actually start caring about these people and not treating them like sheep. Now if you still disagree then we'll have to agree to disagree.

i agree with you in principle themusiclover and i would love to deliver equality to the masses but in order for help to be offered there must also be a level of practicality to any idealism. it is simply not possible to help everyone - its a sad but necessary fact - i always think of the boats in titanic - it is heartbreaking for the few rescue boats to be loaded so lightly and more should have been made of them and your class / status is no definition of your right to survival BUT if the boats had gone into the masses then they too would have been overrun with the result of further deaths, and the ability to help would have been removed completely. the best strategy would be to work from the fringes and to help those in most need, while doing your best to be fair but strong against those who look to take to a boat just because they are strong and able and looking for opportunity

i hope that helps explain my feelings

things of this complexity are always difficult to discuss but thats what makes them interesting :)

wow sim :stunned: n can get serious :o :P

i like threads like these very much

 i have nothing to say about the matter because i havn't decided how i feel about it!!! :P
