i'm not sure if there's an existing thread on this, i couldn't find any.

i've been a fan since AROBTTH album came out, so it's been quite a while. when my friend asked me to recommend me some coldplay songs i got totally excited! she haven't heard of their songs (or the band! i thought that wasn't possible at first lol) before... so it's like a totally a new listening ear. just wondering what would YOU recommend?

here's my list:

death and all his friends

Don't Panic

Everything's Not Lost

Gravity

i can't believe i forgot these!! thanks ;)

Yes!!! Gravity!!!!!!!!!, Yellow, of course, just be like, here, here's all 4 albums!!!!

Some of those songs could be boring to a new listener.

I'd recommend Yellow, Fix You, Clocks, Violet Hill, etc. Great songs that are also exhilarating. Everything's Not Lost could be a bit dull.

I'm actually gonna recommend you start her with some singles. Use variety with them; mix some upbeat Viva la Vida or In My Place with a piano-rich Clocks, a majestic and soothing Fix You, maybe a rocker like Violet Hill, and then top things off with Yellow so that she knows the roots.

No harm in throwing in some less-mainstream gems (Politik, Strawberry Swing), but most of those you have to ease into more.

That's exactly what I did the other day with a friend of mine who was in the same situation.

LIT ii was the first one that came in to my head... it's just so postive - how could you not fall in love with that song?

Why not recommend one whole album to start with?

go back to the start - blue room , brothers and sisters and parachutes

Whatever you do with new listeners, don't bombard them with a dozen songs at once! Send them one or two at a time... Hold back your enthusiasm; I know it's hard, but you don't want to scare them off!

I'm doing this with a friend of mine currently. Every couple days I send her a youtube link, "check THIS song out, now!" :)

If you're going to recommend a whole album, it has to be AROBTTH - it's the most "newbie-friendly"

go back to the start - blue room , brothers and sisters and parachutes

Even now, I find some of their earliest stuff rather maudlin... I prefer Chris in optimistic, anthemic mode

Personally I'd get (burn) her anyone of the albums, maybe AROBTTH or VLV or both.

If you're looking for a compilation, a lot depends on her tastes. Politik and Bigger Stronger might not be everyone's cup of tea, but are 'must adds' if you're afraid someone may find them too soft. All the singles are safe bets, but I hope you include at least some of the following:

Bigger Stronger, Don't Panic, Shiver, Trouble, Politik, The Scientist, Clocks, Green Eyes, Warning Sign, Amsterdam, Talk, SOS, THP, LIT 1, LIJ, Violet Hill, Strawberry Swing.

But most of all try to get a well rounded set. Never list two songs off the same album back to back.

An example could go:

Politik

Shiver

The Scientist

Talk

Bros & Sisters (trouble version)

Trouble

Viva la Vida

etc.

my sentiments exactly............. totally agree here

Viva La Vida

yellow

clocks

LITii

FIX You

any of the above

:laugh3:Start with the ones that grab instant attention, and are a bit more upbeat.. I think Strawberry Swing is really nice, or Lover's in Japan, or Clocks ;)

Well, these are the songs I gave to my besties to turn them into fans, and it's definately worked:

LiT ii

In My Place

The Hardest Place

Clocks

Warning Sign

The Scientist

Talk

GPASUYF

Speed of Sound

Politik

Trouble

Green Eyes

Don't Panic

Shiver

Fix You

Postcards From Far Away

Yellow

They both had VLV already.

Don't Panic, Green Eyes, The Scientist, Fix You, Life in Technicolor ii, A rush of blood to the head.

One of my friends used to listen to Viva La Vida and it happend that she joined me to go to their show. She didn't know any song exspect of Viva so it was an 'experiment' for her. It took me six months to make her borrow my albums, but it worked. ;)

I agree with you, do not give too many songs the same time away. And look carefully to choose some popular ones or ones which are not too experimental for the first round. For example I truly love Lovers In Japan and it's such a perfect song, but I wouldn't give it away to a first time listener. Therefore I think it's a bit too ... maybe you could get a wrong impression of Coldplay.

LiT ii and Clocks should be in, Strawberry Swing and Speed Of Sound as well.

And, as a tipp, don't put too many X&Y tracks together in a row, because all my friends who listened to the whole X&Y said they can't differ one song from another. (Which I can't understand.)

^ yeah, anything like this would be a great mix. It might be better to avoid songs like VLV which everyone on the planet has heard multiple times. They're much more likely to really enjoy great songs they haven't heard before, like shiver and warning sign.

Lost? !!!!! :nice: My friend got caught up into Coldplay after listening to Lost? ! :D

Yeah, I would probably start with VLV... I don't understand it, all my friends absolutely don't like Coldplay but they think VLV is a catchy song... I don't get why....

I actually had this same situation and made a disc. I just added as many singles and my favourite album tracks onto one disc, lol. It turned out nicely I think and has a nice flow to it, although it was still missing a few singles... I just didn't have enough room, ha! Oh, and they liked it enough to go by the albums :smug:

Violet Hill

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

Speed of Sound

Viva La Vida

Clocks

Talk

Life in Technicolor ii

The Scientist

Yellow

White Shadows

Lovers In Japan

In My Place

Fix you

Shiver

Politik

The Hardest Part

Trouble

My two-cents worth  Not necessarily in any order since I know I'm shite at song sequence :embarassed:

LiT ii

Yellow

GPASUYF

Fix You

Violet Hill

Shiver

Strawberry Swing

Lovers in Japan

Death and All His Friends

It's starting to look like the entire Coldplay discography

In My Place will work, that guitar riff sent chills to my spine at the first listen. Viva la Vida would be also a great choice.
