there were some spies stuck underwater, but they managed to escape. Similar to the Bond film where he infiltrated the dinner party, except they weren't donning evening wear nor a snorkel :)

It was their attempt at a sort of bond song. Its not about any particular world leader, country (especially China :rolleyes: ) or event. If there is a message its about optimism in scary times. "Don't Panic" you know... Chris once said that almost all of their songs start out worrying about something, but by the end the narrator is like "wait, what am I worrying about?" Spies is a great example. About fear followed by a comforting resolve.

Well, we can go ahead and use the cop-out response "it's whatever you want it to mean," but my favorite interpretation is that the song is about the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the "spies" being the thought police or other government officials. The final chorus would represent the novel's conclusion, as *SPOILERS* Winston begins to realize his newfound love of his totalitarian government.

Yea some many times when you try to find meanings they give you that whole it is what ever it means to you, i know many of their songs have such deep meanings (violet hill) especially. Anybody when they started that whole Make Trade Fair campaign?

that's what i love about all of their songs; you can interperet them any way you want. w/e mood or situation you're in, practically all of their songs apply & they will comfort you
