Do any Coldplay fans actually GET Coldplay?

Featured Replies

In any case Chris Martin does have a bunch of ambiguous lyrics in coldplay songs that are prone to debate. It sounds sort of rude to come in the forum proclaiming omniscience about such things.

But probably the reason you haven't seen many agreeable posts til now is because its usual the less intuitive people that speak the loudest in such matters.

Expertly put.

But i do think that there is a difference between "getting" the meaning of a lyric, and "getting" Coldplay (Chris). I think thats why so many different people can relate to them at so many different levels, and thats part of their appeal, of course. Chris clearly keeps things ambiguous intentionally, and often will declare songs to be about nonsense (tongue firmly in cheek), in order to keep it that way. I have a feeling that its a select few that actually "get" Coldplay.

Why do some people even assume that you have to "get" the meaning of a song to appreciate it anyway? There is more to a song than just the lyrics. Course, this is coming from a musician, so of course I recognize the beauty in the chord structures, the chord progressions, and rhythm.

But I agree with Natster when she says "Chris clearly keeps things ambiguous intentionally." Hell, Chris Martin and the members of Coldplay are mysterious and ambiguous, so of course their music would reflect that. What I think one song means, someone else might thing something completely different and we both claim we "get" the song. And the key is, we're both right. A song is meant to be taken by the listener at their face value. At least, that's what I've always thought.

For instance, Proskept's March, to me, is about that moment before death when you contemplate the life you have lead and realize that we are born into this world alone and leave it ultimately alone, and it's a shocking revelation. But...that could be a completely bum meaning to someone else, who might construe the song to mean about a fear of death.

Who knows! That's the beauty of Coldplay's lyrics.

And finally, I feel like the OP's post came off as patronizing and condescending to the collective here at coldplaying.com. But...that's just my opinion.

You obviously are not a true fan because if you were you would know that Chris M. is against alcohol and drugs....Sorry

You obviously did not detect on your Sarcas-M-eter that Nick was being sarcastic! Perhaps a new antenna is needed.

Firstly, come on... don't be a crazy fan.

Secondly, is that why he's always talking about sleeping pills and lets off that he may be a bit dependant on them?

not that Nick was being serious, but Chris does enjoy a beer or champagne every now and then when hanging out with the guys. All in moderation.

So he says. He also claims to be straight. There is no proof of that.

I doubt it was ever properly installed in the first place...

see, that's what i love about their songs. they can be so ambiguous at times, that w/e situation you're in the lyrics can touch you & they apply to you all the time. yeah, some songs are pretty straight forward, but when i hear a coldplay song for the first time i was like "wow, this is what i'm going through & this is my answer."
