Whatever form of bird that the modern Chicken is evolved from would lay eggs. It's not like eggs didn't exist before Chickens.

THANK YOU.

A MUCH better question would be, "Which came first, the genetic chicken as it is today or the genetic chicken egg as it is today?" ;)

Yes that's the question !

Anyway the chicken and the egg have both evolved since something which nearly look like a chicken exists...

And when can we talk about the "actual" chicken ? Evolution is a continuous process, pterydactals didn't become chickens in one night

NO SHIT

Chickens are not going to evolve though, so it's not continual, it has stopped

Actually, they are. People breed chickens and will keep breeding them to be better at making meat/eggs/eating less/pooping less or whatever. I mean you look at a chicken today and you look at a semi-domesticated jungle fowl from 3,000 years ago or what have you and they're probably different.

Or maybe not. I guess there aren't any jungle fowl from 3,000 years ago still around. But I'm sure you get my point. Plus people are going to go extinct one of these days anyway.

yes but they aren't wild anymore, they don't get hunted, they are bred to hatch eggs, their efficiency in that department is controlled by humans, they wont evolve, much like we wont.
