Ah, ok, so you just have to work it out one step at a time. Drawings help.

 

So the first car is going this way <----- at X km/h and the second car is going this way -----> at X+5 km/h.

 

That means that the total distance between them in one hour will be 2 X's and another 5km.

 

Now you just need to double that to get the distance in two hours then solve for X.

That's what this is, algebraic equations.

 

To catch up in math class because I've been sick the teacher just gave me these three worksheets where you have to solve equations you know, like 2(x-4)=12 which is simple and do some questions like "The perimeter of a square is 49.3 cm. The side length of the square is represented by the expression (x+4.1) cm. What is the value of x?

 

And then this one is next and I can't figure out an equation which I'm sure we need because that's what all the worksheets are is equations. :thinking:

I could figure it out I'm sure if I could just figure out what the equation looks like. :freak:

Yep, 210 is the distance in two hours, so it's equal to 2 times the distance in one hour.

 

210 = 2(distance in one hour)

 

I'm not going to be more specific than that because you'll learn best if you figure part of it out yourself. :P ;)

I love math, when I was a little I used to do it for fun and I somehow randomly figured out how to do long division and a whole bunch of things all by myself. :wacko:

I think you need to divide 210 in half, and you have to remember that one went 5km/hr faster than the other, so one went further than the other.

That's right. But you always do functions in the brackets first if they can be simplified, and x+x is usually written 2x. It will seem less wrong then.

No, because the second speed is in relation to the first speed- it is going 5km/h faster. If you figure out the speed of the first car (X) then you add five to that for the speed of the second car (X+5).

 

That means that if it turns out that the first car is going 60 km/h (it isn't actually) then the second car will be going 65 km/h.

I never do. That's why I always have to draw little pictures when I'm solving word problems like that.

Algebra is awesome.

 

I have a knack for mental math, I'm not brilliant though.

My teacher got mad at me so much for not showing my work which sucks because I don't actually do any work and doing the work would be a waste of my time since I already know the answer.

he just gives me full marks now even when I don't show any work.

ANyways, their ways of doing things are stupid. :P

^I always had that problem too. It drove my teachers a bit crazy. But the thing is that when it all gets really hard and long and complicated in grades 11 and 12, if you have lots of practice writing things out the long way it makes it easier to understand what is happening.

What my old teacher taught me was to work it out visually, because that helps a lot.

This is a very stupid drawing, but I think you get the point of what I mean:

And if you don't like or you get stuck working it out with math, you can just figure out that it is 2x + 5, so just subtract the 5 and divide it by 2, then you know your x value, and then you just add 5 to one of your x's (because one of them is 5 km faster than the other) and you have your two speeds.

Um, you can probably get away without showing it some of the time if your teacher is ok with it. But at the same time I don't think you'll regret the practice you would get.
