When I lived in a city I still used my car as I worked all over the place, but if I was based in the city all the time I would've pretty much walked everywhere, it was pretty sweet being within 5mins from whatever you need.

 

But of course I did still go away for weekends and such, would be annoying to get buses for things like that. So I'd say you should still learn but it's not quite as important to know as if you lived out in the middle of nowhere.
