Coldplayer's Top 100 Songs of All Time - NOMINATION PROCESS

Featured Replies

I didn't go through with this last year but I have a new, easy way to calculate these things so it won't be a chore like it was last time. Anyway:

Rules/Guidelines (please read):

-Nominate 20 of YOUR FAVORITE songs - ORDER DOES NOT MATTER

-Only 1 song per artist please, if we don't enforce this we'd have like 40 Coldplay songs on the final list

-Coldplay IS allowed but like any other artist only one song nomination per coldplayer.

-repeat nominating is redundant because the song is already been entered in the competition, so make sure you don't re-nominate songs that have already been nominated...

-You MAY *link* your choices to youtube videos so other coldplayers become familiar with a song you entered in the competition that they might not know

-Nominating process will be open for a while so everyone gets a chance to nominate their 20 songs.

Get going and have fun!

Off with his head man Off with his head man!!

1. Coldplay - The Scientist / When people look back at Coldplay in 20 years, this will be the song they are hailed for. Not Yellow, not Clocks, not Viva La Vida. This song is as perfect as Coldplay will ever get. Martin is on his best with writing this song. Simple, angsty, elegant, tragic, the best.

2. Bad - U2 / U2 deserve so much more than one rank by me, and I hate to say it, but I will be breaking your rule. Bad is their best song, the song that catapulted them into super stardom. Odd, because its usually a single that does that. U2 owe themselves to this song and Live Aid. Edge is just begging to learn how to mindf**k the world with his delay in this song. Bono is so raw and full of passion. Their best song

3. 99 Problems - Jay-Z / Many will say this song was Hova at the height of his rap game. Till this day I agree, The Black Album was everything he said it was. With the likes of Kanye West, Timbaland and Dre working with him on it, its bound to be great. His flow is at the top, and Jay proves how great he really is.

4. Hurt - Johnny Cash / Funny a song by Reznor would define the end of one of the greatest musicians careers. The man in black, stole the NIN song and made it his own. Covered after June had passed away, Cash translates the emotion Reznor intended and make this pure powerhouse work. "It's not my song anymore." Reznore says about his most personal song.

5. Billie Jean - Micheal Jackson / Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean, three greatest songs back to back to back on an album ever. Micheal was a genius and this song to me, not the other two prove it!

6. The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana / Recorded meer days before that fateful day. Cobain was truly the man who sold the world, and there in sold his soul. He battled himself and lost. This song to me describes Kurt perfectly.

7. Wonderwall - Oasis / A truly magical song. The best Oasis will ever produce. Is it about his ex-wife or imaginary friend? Will we ever know? As good as it'll get for Oasis.

8. Alive - Pearl Jam / Eddie Vedder, the last great rock front man. So full of power and emotion. I picked Alive simply because it showcases his emotion of the story behind it. Vedder's mom lied to him about his father, whom died before he got a chance to meet him. Eddie showcases his vocal power and pure emotion with this one.

9. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd / About Sid, this song was written after he randomly popped into Abbey Road when Floyd was recording after he had left. He just sat there and smoked a cigarette, never said a word. Then left, never to be seen again. Gilmour wrote this as a tribute to him and his lost friend. The most powerful, and meaningful Floyd song.

10. Every Breath You Take - The Police / The most talented group of all time, with their best song written at a time of utter turmoil. Its creepy, strange, yet so compelling. Easily their best song.

11. Man On The Moon - R.E.M. / I once knew the story behind this one. I know its about a comedian, not Neil Armstrong. Great song!

12. Smooth - Santana ft. Rob Thomas / Rob Thomas made Santana cool for my generation. He brought this legend onto contemporary radio again. Also likely Thomas' best song to date, a perfect song all around.

13. Open Your Eyes - Snow Patrol / Sorry folks no story behind this one. Simply just Lightbody's angst. A song that always gets me and never lets go. Easily their best unknown song.

14. Hunger Strike - Temple of tthe Dog / Pearl Jam before Pearl Jam? Soundgarden before Soundgarden? I give you Temple of the Dog. Comprised of one half the original cast of Pearl Jam and one half the original Soundgarden, and one part from Soundgarden now with Pearl Jam. Confusing I know. This was set up just before Nirvana made grunge cool. A amazing duet by the two best grunge vocalist, Cornell and Vedder, with some awesome insturments. Written about what is assumed Robin Hood, its just a plain old great song. Grunge before grunge was cool!

15. Daughters - John Mayer / John Mayer is the new Clapton with a better personality, and better songs. This one was one of his earlier poppy songs. About a girl with daddy issues, and how a child is extremely effected by their parents in the early years. Its about his angst surrounding a girl and how her daddy messed her up. He then pleads with parents to love their children, because they need you in order to be able to love in life.

16. One - U2 / There are so many theories about this song. Often seen as the song that saved U2 during turmoil. They were playing in the studio when they jammed upon this song, and Eno happened to be recording it. they looked at each other and knew this was THE song. "I dont know why people use this as their wedding song. I always feel bad, but dont want to tell them its a break up song" The Edge. So its a clue!

17. Where the Streets Have No Names - U2 / The Best. I repeat, THE BEST album opener of history! This song marked the Edge as a guitar genius. Bono as a lyrical mastermind and kicked off the last great album in the last 25 years. Edge stumbled upon this one night and recorded it right away through a phone I believe. It is easily the best U2 song behind Bad and One.

18. Clocks - Coldplay / "If this song is ever a hit on the radio, I will eat my hat!" The song that helped launch Coldplay into our radio's and keep us there. I once again break the rules.

19. Changes - Tupac / This song has a new meaning ever since November 4th 2008. Does it really change everything though, does Tupac message stills tand strong? Is it just black? Or humanity as a whole?

20. Hey Jude - The Beatles / Their best song in my opinion. Proves the genius of this band. We all know what its about!

I stopped reading when I saw 99 problems

Not a bad list.

I just looked at the songs and skimmed through.

Lol at John Mayer having a good personality though. The guy is a douche.

I stopped reading when I saw 99 problems

Thats a little ignorant no?

Edit: I like to think of Mayer as he is on stage. I do admit he is a bit douchy though.

Some great gems on that list, and Mayer, like Clapton is sooo much better live! I'm not sure I have the patience to put descriptions, but I'll post a list of mine tonight.

Im not removing duplicate artists either. I didnt load my list with them. I have 2 and 3. All others are stretched. Plus I know other people will nominate them anyways.

Good list. I'm going to get going on mine later. I hope some of them nobody has heard of, which I think won't happen because i think a lot of us like the same music! :)

Good idea! :)

I went for my favourites/the best. Also ones with stories behind them. Add to the cool factor I think.

Well the first songs will be counted by either artist, your duplicates weren't very uncommon though so I wouldn't be surprised if someone else nominates them soon.

Thats a little ignorant no?

That's actually true. *omits 99 problems and reads list*

I agree, sounds fair!

Anyway this is my list, in no particular order

Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)

The Killers - When You Were Young

Blondie - Atomic

The Turtles - Happy Together

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way?

Coldplay - Strawberry Swing

The Beatles - Yesterday

Jimmy Destri - Living in Your Heart (no one will know this but it's an all time favorite, nonetheless)

Muse - Plug in Baby

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

David Bowie - Sound and Vision

Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal

Stereophonics - Dakota

INXS - Need You Tonight

Jeff Buckley - Lover, You Should've Come Over

Duran Duran - Come Undone

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

A-ha - Take on Me

Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Stupid to only have 1 song per artist. It's not a true list now.

And I'm not gonna go through everyone's to avoid re-nomination.

I'm out.

You're taking this a bit too seriously? The one song per artist rule only applies to an individual's personal top 20, the final chart and list of nominations will have numerous songs by certain artists when everyone has voted, although if people are truly against the one song per artist rule in their personal top 20 then it can be changed, this is all just for fun afterall.

wait, so if you can't renominate songs other people have chosen, then how do you eventually reduce it down to a 100 songs?

I think the one per rule is fine. Or we're gonna have like a million Radiohead/Coldplay songs.

You don't have to keep track of other people's ballots, and you CAN re-nominate a song if you'd like but once a song is already nominated by someone it's nominated, no need to re-vote a song nominated. But there's nothing stopping you from renominating a song if you so choose to

I doubt I find more than 30 bands good enough to be on the list. Wait, I have like 60 on my ipod, but I can't even make a top 20 of Radiohad

This is tough and pretty rough. I'm probably forgetting a lot, it's in no order.

1. "Holes" - Mercury Rev Beautiful song, that builds up and erupts softly but amazingly. About struggles of life in a band, with people trying to take advantage of you. Or at least that's how I see it.

2. "Running Up That Hill" - Placebo Amazing. I'm finding it hard to describe these songs cause I just feel like writing "amazing" or "beautiful." But it's about wanting to take the place of a loved one who's dying.

3. "The Drugs Don't Work" - The Verve A classic, just a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics.

4. "In A Little While" - U2 I had a hard time picking a favorite U2 song, but this one stands out. When I first heard this song, it was a I think The Killers with Bono joining the on stage. Then I got the U2 version, and was blown away "Slow down my beating heart"

5. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" - The Smiths I couldn't decide between this or "How Soon Is Now," but I chose this cause the end with the "there is a light, it never goes out" repeating is very nice.

6. "Nightswimming" - REM Easily my favorite REM song, simple, earnest, and beautiful.

7. "Talk Show Host" - Radiohead It was either this or Fake Plastic Trees. I adore the simple guitar on this song. It's just an awesome song.

8. "Wonderwall" - Oasis A classic, and to me their best song. So simple yet so fantastic. I dunno, it's always been one of my favorites since the first time I heard it.

9. "Cold Desert" - Kings Of Leon Just a nice depressing song. Love the way it goes quit and the slowly starts again even more miserable than before. Apparently the lead singer was feeling down and drunk when he sang it, and they only played it once or something.

10. "Smile Like You Mean It" - The Killers One of my favorite bands, and my favorite song of their's. I think it's the lyrics that do it for me, strike a chord.

11. "Hamburg Song" - Keane Maybe one of my favorite songs ever, I'm not even a huge Keane fan, but this song is wow. Beautiful ballad. It was written by one band member for another.

12. "Hurt" - Johnny Cash Classic song. Amazing lyrics. You can just hear the pain in his voice. Chilling.

13. "F-Stop Blues" - Jack Johnson This is the ultimate song to relax to, so chilled out. I believe it's about father and son.

14. "November Rain" - Guns N Roses Long, but not at all drawn out. Just beautiful. "Sometimes I need some time on my own"

15. "Michael" - Franz Ferdinand A fun, upbeat song from one of my favorite bands. Makes people question Alex Kaprano's sexuality I think. But who cares, he is amazing.

16. "Crash Into Me" - Dave Matthews Band A nice mellow song. It's always been one of my favorite songs and easily my favorite DMB song. Never gets old.

17. "Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd Classic song, the lyrics are absolutely lovely. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears, wish you were here."

18. "Mardy Bum" - Arctic Monkeys Definately one of my favorite bands and probably my favorite song from them. A fun, upbeat track with clever lyrics, love it.

19. "Yesterday" - The Beatles Probably my favorite Beatles song. So simple and so short, yet so beautiful.

20. "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" - Coldplay Most likely my favorite Coldplay song. Loved it from the instance I heard it. The beginning is amazing. Then it erupts and it's even better. It's just brilliant. Maybe my favorite song ever.

Ooh I was hoping someone would nominate "A Rush of Blood to the Head" it's my second favorite Coldplay song

I stopped reading when I saw 99 problems

Great idea! I really like it! But I don't know if I would submit my list because of people like that ^ I mean come on ...:dozey:

Nightswimming is my favorite REM song. It's so beautiful, gets to me all the time.
