Coldplayer's Top 100 Songs of All Time - NOMINATION PROCESS

Featured Replies

Well the only song I can think of off the top of my head right now is Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah it's simply the best. I get chills every time.

Nice list Prospekt. I love In A Little While, especially the Live from Boston version. Edge is an amazing singer.

Im loving all this 99 Problems hate. Its great!

Yeah, Stay (Faraway, So Close) Live from Boston is amazing too.

I confess I have 99 Problems in my iTunes.

I love the song 99 problems... its on a mix in my car.

Most of the Elevation DVD was amazing. The Fly was so damn awesome!

On my reasons behind 99 Problems. I love Jay-Z, and it was his top song at the height of his career.

I think I know how the ranking system will be done too. One nomination per each is perfect viable and makes sense.

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 - A song I never grow tired of. The layering from ringing arpeggios to low drones to the rolling rythm section is truly masterful, not to mention a powerful gospel-style chorus everyone, as human beings, can relate to.

Beautiful Mind - The Verve - This lesser known Verve track is breathtakingly immersive, with smooth, dense sweeping reverb coated by clean, blissful, descending high notes. I can't stress how sensational this track is, if you haven't heard it, stop what you're doing and spend five minutes floating on Nick McCabe's brilliance.

Glosoli - Sigur Ros - I don't think I've ever been more affected my a piece of music than this. Like the video it sends you soaring off a cliff while somehow remaining organic and innocent. I defy you to find a song like it, from the unique marching percussion, to the tinkling music box, to the groaning bowed-guitar, to the glorious icelandic melodies. This song is beyond amazing.

Baba O'Riley - The Who - A Classic. Everyone's heard this track somewhere, and I don't think anyone denies its a great rock song. From the interesting intro to the chorus to the violin outro, every bit of this song is distinct, recognisable, and brilliant.

Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley - This Leonard Cohen cover blows away the spoken poetry of the original with heart-squeezing emotion, amazing guitar arpeggios and a ridiculous vocal range and sustain (particularly at the end). So soft, but it has such an impact on the listener.

How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead - In an album that many still find hard to access, this track stands out for its fluid, melancholic acoustic guitar and surprisingly lucid, sincere vocals. The chorus 'I'm not here, this isn't happening' followed by descending string slides paints a powerful picture of wanting to escape. When Thom voice peaks near the end, the orchestra quickly overpowers him before leaving him stranded, still singing. Perhaps Radiohead's most emotional song.

Coldplay - Clocks - When push comes to shove, no matter how sick I may get of it, Clocks will remain my favorite Coldplay Song. The driving beat synched with the yearning piano riff, and beautiful high notes during the chorus makes this probably the most immortal coldplay song.

Arcade Fire – Wake Up -- Title says it all. This songs main riff consists of simple chords but is performed in such an intensely perfect way that you can't help but sing along. The key andrythm changes are a huge bonus as well.

Interpol – Obstacle 1 - Every bit of this song (not just the vocals) screams catharsis. It consists of simple elements but its layered, driving and dialogued guitar tones squeeze every bit of hidden beauty out of this strong, powerful song.

Us And Them – Pink Floyd - Out of the funky bass of Money on DSOTHM comes a beautiful organ segging into a soulful chord progression and saxophone intro. The echoing vocals preach a powerful message about war and inequality. The soaring chorus may be the high note to the whole album.

Read My Mind – The Killers - Acknowledged by Flowers as one of the greatest songs they've written, the iconic synths spin a tale of a kid trying to escape to bigger things in life. Another song I rarely grow sick of.

Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles - Among George Harrision's greatest contributions, the chorus of this song is softly warm and optimistic, among my favorites to hear on a rainy day.

The Longest Time – Billy Joel - So F-ing catchy! And to think Joel did all 14 or so harmony voices himself? Genius! The most rythm a white guy has had since The Beach Boys.

Belief - John Mayer - This song is truly amazing live, but even the radio edit is worth a second listen due to its great beat and riff. The lyrics, which forecast the unsolvable difficulty of opposing convictions in the world, are especially insightful, and by the time the na's come in during the outro, I'm convinced this is possible Mayer's best music contribution.

Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton - I'll spare you the story, needless to say this heartfelt song with its emotional lyrics and subtle accompaniments, is perhaps his most effective piece, even without a blues solo.

Falling Slowly – The Frames - Made famous by the movie 'Once', this full band version adds exquisite slide guitar, drums and a beautiful violin to make the most of Glen Hansard's gorgeous little song.

Don’t Look Back In Anger – Oasis - Imagine and Pachelbel rip-off ignored, this is Oasis at their best. Forgive me for preferring Noel's vocals, but the great chorus and numerous guitar accompaniment snippets make this a classic 90s song.

Please Forgive Me – David Gray - Say what you want, but I'm a sucker for the great drums and really effective chords in this song. Yes its easy, but I still think its a darn good song.

Somewhere Only We Know - Keane - I haven't been too impressed by Keane since Hopes & Fears, so I keep returning to this truly impressive opening track. The driving piano chords from the intro to the chorus show you really can make a huge song without guitars.

Sometimes – My Bloody Valentine - This stand out track on the critically acclaimed 'Loveless' seems like just fuzzy noise off the get go, but soon you realize that underneath it lies subtle vocals and a powerful, growing keyboard melody. Once you become adjusted to the loud guitar as a replacement for a softer medium, this track grows on you extremely fast.

Falling Slowly – The Frames - Made famous by the movie 'Once', this full band version adds exquisite slide guitar, drums and a beautiful violin to make the most of Glen Hansard's gorgeous little song.

For a second I didn't think you'd have a Frames song, but you did! And nice song descriptions!

i love the detail everyone is putting into this! :)

Too complicated :\

This is VERY, VERY Hard to do! But here I go...

1) Coldplay- Amsterdam

Coldplay are my favourite band with so many AMAZING songs so it was very hard to choose my fave song by Coldplay, but I had to go with Amsterdam as it's just so spine-tingingly amazing! It gives you that little 'pick me up' which you need when you're at your lowest eb! Close seconds for Coldplay songs are: See You Soon, Politik, Talk and Yellow.

When's the deadline?

No solid deadline yet, I'll just continually bump this for the next few weeks or until we get enough song nominations (hoping to get at least 800 or so)

I've thrown a rough list together...I could easily list 100 sngs just on my own tho :\

1. I Am The Resurrection - The Stone Roses

2. Yes - Coldplay

3. Comforting Sounds - Mew

4. Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy

5. Mission Drive - The Wonder Stuff

6. Shower Your Love - Kula Shaker

7. Earthwheel - Sandkings

8. FEAR - Ian Brown

9. The Bends - Radiohead

It's not perfectly ordered...but near enough...

Ooh. Devil's Haircut is a real good song. I don't know if it would be in my top 20 compared to other Beck songs, but maybe it's cause I haven't listened to it in a while.
