I already posted this on the other thread, but I hope it is OK to post a thread on its own so Californians may spot the opportunity more easily to help some of those families devastated by the recent floods in the Philippines.

A member here, Ioshi, has a friend in California who can ship any in-kind donations, whatever you can spare, for free if you can deliver them to her. Here is Ioshi's message (she cannot get online at the moment herself):

Message from Ioshi:

As you already know, I'm at Bulacan at the moment, people from around our farm lost their homes as they got caught in landslides. Oh and my Dad's crops got destructed too. That's sad cos most of these harvests were given to my Dad's laborers and their family. :(

Nobody's online, so if its okay, can you please post this over at the Philippines help thread? We are really in need of more in-kind donations (canned goods, used clothes, blankets, for personal grooming like soap, toothpastes and toothbrushes and all that stuff), if ANYONE, please, who's living in California, we are in dire need and I'm asking you to donate thru my friend, Fides Magtoto, she is also a Filipina living in California, she got a free shipping. Just tell her you are a friend of mine (Ioshi Enriquez) so that she won't get freaked out. If they could drop off the goods here, this is my friend's home address (I don't want to put Ioshi's friend's contact details on the internet so please PM me AND Jsalyers for contact info, that way hopefully you will catch at least one of us online. She lives in Anaheim Hills, and her school is in Camarillo)

Please feel free to leave messages of support and encouragement here even if you can't help.

This will 'bump' the thread and make it more likely that any Californians who can help will see it.

Many thanks :)

I think this should be a sticky thread for some days

Oh, you've stickied it Lore? Thank you so very much indeed, that is wonderful!

I've messaged Ioshi asking if there is a time limit on getting any donations of goods to her friend in California, she did not mention one earlier today.

I'd just like to stress again that if anyone in the area can help, I am sure no donation is too small. These people need even the very basics of life right now: blankets to keep warm, soap and other basic toiletries to keep clean, and tins of food (also Ioshi suggested packets of instant food, but nothing perishable).

I am still waiting for news from Ioshi about when any donated goods will need to be with her friend by. She has sent a message to her friend in Cali, but Ioshi is no doubt sleeping now after another hard day working as a volunteer in her home village.

For those not in Cali, there is much information about how we might help on the other thread about the disaster:

And, of course, there have been a succession of terrible natural events these last few days, it is not only the Philippines that needs the help of the world right now :(

I have sent you the contact details for the person and place to make donations to, and edited the first post of this thread so that people can also PM you for the information :)

Ok so heard back from Ioshi's contact, unfortunately the sender is unable to send any more donations cause they can only send so much. But I heard there are some companies that are accepting donations so im going to do some research and see which ones are accepting. If anyone knows any info about this please post, thanks!

The Philippines hit by typhoon - please donate

Latest news from Danish Red Cross's website: http://drk.dk/

Villages devastated by Padang - Wednesday's devastating earthquake in Padang in Indonesia has placed several villages deserted. Many are almost completely destroyed - 80 percent of the houses are either totally razed or will never be habitable again.

From the American Red Cross's website:

Red Cross Assists Flooded Communities in Philippines before Stronger Typhoon Strikes Friday, October 02, 2009

While Typhoon Ketsana ravaged the Philippines last week, dropping more than one month’s worth of rain in less than 12 hours, residents are now bracing for the impact of Typhoon Parma on Saturday. In the midst of widespread flooding that has killed hundreds of people, the American Red Cross and its sister Red Cross societies around the world are working to meet local needs.

The approaching storm compounds problems faced by local communities. Of the estimated 2.5 million people that were affected by the first storm, over 500,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes. Local evacuation centers are crowded and temporary shelter facilities are struggling to provide sanitary water for every resident.

“We are contributing at least $70,000 in relief supplies, such as blankets, tarps, and insecticide-treated bednets to prevent malaria” said Alex Mahoney, disaster manager for Asia for the American Red Cross. “An American Red Cross shelter specialist is also en route. As Typhoon Parma approaches, we are in touch with responders throughout the region and are ready to provide more support if needed.”

The American Red Cross supplies are pre-positioned in Kuala Lumpur, and will meet the needs of an estimated 5,000 families.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Red Cross volunteers and staff have been active since before the typhoon, giving early warnings and evacuating residents. They have rescued 900 families to date and are pre-positioning supplies for the next storm.

Typhoon Parma could develop into a super typhoon by tomorrow with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. This is more than twice as strong as Typhoon Ketsana, which put much of the capital city Manila underwater. Last week’s storm was the worst that Manila has faced in over forty years.

While flood waters have already receded in many areas, there has been a significant loss of life, property, agriculture and infrastructure.

YOU can help the victims of countless crises around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.

DONATIONS to the International Response Fund can be sent to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at http://www.redcross.org.

Wonderful news - all things considered. :) I'm glad that the typhoon changed its path, and my heart goes out to those being in the northern part of Luzon which is affected by strong winds. I cross my fingers and hope the best.
