New year, same old binge Britain: Revellers over-indulge as they ring in 2010

It might have been the start of a brand-new decade but there was nothing fresh about the state of many revellers on the streets of Britain last night.

In yet another depressing portrayal of binge Britain, drunken party-goers grappled with police and scantily-dressed girls fell face down on the pavement.

Perilous ice, freezing temperatures and more snow did little to deter the hordes of people hellbent on ringing in 2010 by drinking to excess.

Across Britain hundreds were arrested as police and the paramedics battled to deal with the volume of calls as parties spilled over into violence and illness.

In Newcastle, a girl in a mini-dress and towering high heels fell flat on her face on the snow. Helpless, she had to be dragged to her feet by a friend.

Elsewhere in the city, men ignored the cold and stripped off their shirts to fight as the festive spirit gave way to aggression.

Northumbria Police went out to 1,295 incidents across the area and took 2,000 calls during the night.

From Cardiff to Birmingham and beyond, there were further scenes of debauchery with vomit on the streets and clashes with police.

In London, many revellers were simply caught up by the New Year celebrations and enjoyed watching the fireworks and dressing up.

But by 3.30am, Scotland Yard had arrested 78 people for offences ranging from drunken disorderly and drug possession to criminal damage and having an offensive weapon.

More than 3,000 police officers were on duty in the heart of the capital as part of a huge operation to deal with the crowds.

Forecasters have warned that the bitterly cold weather experienced last night will continue to grip the country into the first weekend of the year with temperatures plummeting as low as minus 15C.

Two people also had to be rescued from the Thames by the Metropolitan Police's Marine Support Unit and the RNLI in separate incidents on New Year's Eve.

They were both taken to hospital and are not said to be in a life-threatening condition today.

The annual New Year drunkenness came as a new report revealed the stark impact of Labour's 24-hour drinking laws.

Official figures show the cost of treating drunks has almost doubled in just six years, costing the cash-strapped NHS £2.7billion in 2006/7 compared with £1.47billion in 2001/2.

Experts blame the shocking increase on round-the-clock drinking, which began in 2005, and the availability of cheap alcohol in supermarkets and pubs.

Of course not, Germans don't get drunk on new year's eve.

 No of course not, not in the country of BEER :laugh3:

Do you ever see that sort of scene in Germany? I very much doubt it.;)

There are always places were people drink like there's no tomorrow. Thank god not in my area! :D

I can tell that British people are more liberal than Americans.

Only because if they need an ambulance for a trip to the hospital for alcohol poisoning it's free (ATM) :P

(Okay, I know the NHS isn't free as it's funded though taxes, but there isn't a direct cost raised from the hospital related to your night out)

Yeah that's all I did lay on the floor and had a fight, FUCK YEAH

I was out all night for New Years Eve and I got drunk and I walked home in the snow, on the way I had a snowball fight with my friends. It was fun, what do you make of that Mark?
