:lol:

I had this argument with some of my friends in a Modern Studies class once.. I said they were Alternative/Alternative Rock and they were totally against me.. So I wikipedia'd it and i was right according to there :lol:

But I guess it just depends on what you think..

Coldplay is Coldplay ... and done :D

But this is what we should just go by for now :wacky:

Well, "pop" by definition means popular, well-known music likely to be played on mainstream radio stations, so Coldplay would be considered pop.

"Rock" is an increasingly meaningless genre. Almost anything can be considered rock, as long as it uses drums and guitars basically. So Coldplay is rock also.

"Alternative" usually refers to more artistic rock, newer rock, indie rock...even harder to define, in my opinion. But it's narrower than rock, and can include pop music. I'd say Coldplay is alternative.

What I'm trying to say is that genres and labels are really useless and overlap too much to have any real meaning. It's very subjective, so there's no way you can win an argument. :dozey: Music today is usually a mix of many genres and cannot often be labeled as one thing and not another.

(By the way, I made up those definitions so they could be wrong :lol:)

I've always considered Coldplay pop rock. They write pop songs in the standard structure of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge etc for the most part and most of them are in 4/4. Not always obviously, Viva la Vida as an album has numerous examples.

That's not a slight on the band because Coldplay are good at it.

With the words of Chris: Soft rock :)

Well I would say: Parachutes -> Indie/Alternative Rock

A rush of blood to the head -> Alternative Rock

X&Y -> Rock/Pop

Viva la vida -> Rock/Pop

Though we do not like to hear it but a lot of songs Coldplay are making now are just Pop.
