Organisers of an annual Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, are being urged to replace a live animal, Punxsutawney Phil, with a robotic stand-in.

According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow on February 2 there will be six more weeks of winter.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it is unfair to keep Phil in captivity and subject him to crowds each year.

William Deeley, president of the groundhog club, said that the animal was “treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania”.
