2000 (In Review)

2000!

Er, sorry about my...not making this anytime soon. Because I'm not really sure what to say, here's a song to start us off :P

So, 2000. The (sic) first year of the decade was a year full of some truly awful and some pretty amazing stuff. Looking over the 2000 In Music page on Wikipedia you can see examples...

There are many albums released that year that I've never heard myself, like Xtrmntr - Primal Scream, The Moon & Antarctica - Modest Mouse, Rated R - Queens Of The Stone Age and the Yo La Tengo album (which I can't be bothered typing out because it's so long)

I'll list the albums I have heard:

We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes - Death Cab For Cutie

Mermaid Avenue Vol. II - Billy Bragg and Wilco

Parachutes - Coldplay

Kid A - Radiohead

All That You Can't Leave Behind - U2

1 - The Beatles (Compilation)

One Night Only - Elton John (Live)

Sessions at West 54th - Neil Finn (Live)

so not many really, but I'll just give you an idea of what I've heard from 2000.

A lovely album that one...sorry, I haven't actually heard this in a very long time.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1mkzx_mvZs]YouTube- Someday Some Morning Sometime - Billy Bragg and Wilco[/ame]

The second part of the 2 albums by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The project, using some of Woody Guthries old unreleased lyrics and writing music for them. Really really good. Go check it out please

No matter what I say about Coldplay, I still love this. One of my favourite albums for sure (I have it on Vinyl too )

Probably one of the best debut albums as well. Anyway, you know this album...

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21Zd8xPUQs8]YouTube- Radiohead -- Idioteque (Music Video)[/ame]

I heard someone say that it was ironic that Radiohead wrote the best dance track of the past decade. It's true... Fucking amazing album, to be honest.

How they went from being a pop/rock guitar band to this, I don't know. But this album is one of the best...ever. You may prefer other albums but this is just better...

Holy shit.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvBsYYE3n3w]YouTube- U2 - New York (Live in Boston)[/ame]

I actually quite like this album. Obviously, if compared to U2's previous albums it's not very good. But there are some really nice tracks on it, including this one (New York).

"All That You Can't Leave Behind has sold over 12 million copies, received wide critical acclaim, and won seven Grammy Awards." even if you don't like U2, you've got to admire that...

As long as you avoid 'Beautiful Day' and 'Elevation' it's a quite a good LP.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf2S7kKLtEQ]YouTube- The Beatles - Hello Goodbye[/ame]

I wasn't sure if this album would count, but it's a wonderfully compiled (and remastered) compilation of The Beatles' number 1 singles.

Enough said, really...

Elton John needs no comment :blank:

Lovely

He's a New Zealand legend. His band having the highest chart placing in the US for a NZer (#2 for Don't Dream It's Over) and some success in the UK.

He's such a nice guy, and this live album is very good. Proving that acoustic albums are amazing...

Ahhhahaha, so that was a really bad review thinggggg...but hopefully you'll check those albums out...........

Sorry :(

That was really good actually! Haha

I know what you mean about All That You Can't Leave Behind. Initially I liked Beautiful Day and Elevation...but they kind of got annoying when I heard them EVERYWHERE!

it's about time! :P

anyway 2000 was a pretty great year for music (well mostly Kid A).

My favorite albums from this year are:

1. Kid A-Radiohead

2. Parachutes-Coldplay

3. Standing on the Shoulders of Giants-Oasis

4. All that You Cant's Leave Behind-U2

a lot of good albums released.

1. Kid A

2. Outkast- Stankonia

3. The Avalanches- Since I Left You

4. Modest Mouse- TM&A

5. Primal Scream- XTRMNTR

6. Godpeed you black emperor!- lift your skinny fists

That Oasis album is FUCKING TERRIBLE and I love Oasis. Like creepy stalker love.

Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants is my favourite Oasis album :P

I have yet to understand why Kid A is such a great album. I'm not saying I don't like it, because I do. "Everything In Its Right Place" is one of the greatest opening tracks of an album I've ever heard. Maybe it's because I haven't given it enough proper listens, which I suppose I can 'fess up to. I should make it a mission to listen to the whole thing straight through.

Anyway. Albums of 2000 that I know. Here we go:

♦ Kamelot-"The Fourth Legacy"

♦ Coldplay-"Parachutes"

♦ Blue October-"Consent to Treatment"

♦ Radiohead-"Kid A"

♦ Evanescence-"Origin"

I know, it's not much. I have to confess, I started getting into the modern music scene a bit late (probably it started to really go around my freshman year of high school), and at first it was a slow process. I'm doing a lot better as far as that goes, but I still have a long way to go. This site has been really great about putting me in that direction.

I've never heard the Outkast album, but BOB is actually one of my favourite songs of that decade :P

De Stijl by The White Stripes.

jack white owned every year of this decade except 2002 (spent the year coming up Elephant)

^ I don't have that White Stripes album. What should I expect of it when I listen to it?

Awh, I forgot how much I love Parachutes. It's great when you leave out Yellow and Trouble. :nice:

My mostest favouritest album of 2000 is Solitary Man by Johnny Cash, but I made that clear already I think. Obviously, Kid A is great as well (although I still can't really get into the track Kid A, it's so distorted...). Other favourites:

Fevers and Mirrors by Bright Eyes

The Essential Bob Dylan (gotta start somewhere :D)

Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia by The Dandy Warhols

The live recording of The Wall by Pink Floyd

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes by Death Cab for Cutie

Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea by PJ Harvey

... and of course...

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60uhiPqb2_U]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60uhiPqb2_U[/ame]

Secretly I like the Children of Bodom version just a tiny teensy bit better. Don't tell anyone, please. *shifty look*

I don't have that much music from 2000 though. But I didn't really listen to music back then, so most of the albums above I discovered way later.

So I have a confession to make.

I listened to "Kid A" [the album] in my Botany lecture today, straight through. [i didn't quite get to the track "True Love Waits," but it happens.] While I still don't understand extreme hypeage over it, I will concede that I like it much more now that I've given it a thorough listen. Why I decided not to get into some of those tracks until now, I'll never know.

So yeah. I was somewhat wrong. I apologize. :P

old school blues meets new school garage rock meets epic classic rock riffs meets lo-fi minimalism.

its overhyped in the sense that people expect the 'genius' radiohead fans always describe with exaggerated adjectives to appear immediately, but really, most people are indifferent at best at the first listen. Its definitely a grower.

i'll never forget the first time i listened to the album. i bought it for $20 ( a little dear for a cd) and put it into my cd player. took one listen through and was totally disgusted. i felt like snapping the cd in half because i was soo disappointed. 3 years later it has a guaranteed spot in my list of fave albums of the 2000s.

So basically, what I know of The White Stripes already. Got it. :P

Oh yeah, it really is. I LOVE "Treefingers."

This does not have Linkin Park debut

Ok I know you guys may protest but Hybrid Theory was hugely popular in 2000 (I liked it too)

"CUZ I'M ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EDGE, AND I'M ABOUT TO BREAK!"

I like "Hybrid Theory," too.

They were the first band I consistently liked as a kid.
